Mathematical Moments: Autoethnographic Excursions With A Mathematical Outsider Sociologist, Michael Corbett Jan 2018

Mathematical Moments: Autoethnographic Excursions With A Mathematical Outsider Sociologist, Michael Corbett

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this essay I offer some reflections on the field of mathematics education, and particularly the sociopolitical analysis of mathematics education that has emerged in contemporary scholarship. Here I attempt to do two things. First of all I respond to a recent book on “disorder” in mathematics education, identifying some themes and problematics that I find intriguing and generative from my perspective outside the field. Here I reflect on the way that mathematics is positioned in educational discourse generally as a proxy for human capital and general intelligence. Next I relate stories from my life and practice as a primary …

Pedagogy Of Pitch In L2 Blackfoot, Naatosi I. Fish Jan 2018

Pedagogy Of Pitch In L2 Blackfoot, Naatosi I. Fish

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Pitch in Blackfoot is characterized by the raising of relative pitch on a syllable in a word. Pitch is not a consciously recognized piece of information among native speakers or teachers. However, pitch is important as it impacts the meaning of words. This study looks at the efficacy of visual guides for Blackfoot pronunciation of pitch by second language learners. I hypothesized that use of visual assistance would improve pitch pronunciation in second language learners.

Subjects were nine Blackfoot learners recruited on campus. Participants were shown 15 words with images and asked to pronounce them. Subjects were then given pitch …

Language Use In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen Jan 2018

Language Use In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

A totalistic social group is defined as a collection of individuals who share similar values and goals and who live together within intensive boundaries enforced by the group’s leadership and/or members themselves (Lifton 1969). The focus of this project is to better understand the effect of language on (I) a totalistic group’s social structure and (II) the ideologies and actions of members. The limited linguistic research on totalistic groups claims that leaders and members use language in order to enforce rules and beliefs, encourage conformity, and maintain as well as increase membership. By examining language practices in the US military, …

Internal Structure Of Semelfactive Predicates In English, Lynn C. Nelson Jan 2018

Internal Structure Of Semelfactive Predicates In English, Lynn C. Nelson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis presents an analysis of the internal structure of semelfactive predicates. I propose that the lexical aspect class of semelfactives consists of three sub-categories: (i) semelfactive predicates with internal plurality, (ii) semelfactive predicates which are uni-directional and (iii) semelfactive predicates with plurality of participants. Based on these sub-categories, I further propose that the feature of instantaneity attributed to semelfactives (Smith 1997), should not be used, as semelfactives are in actuality not instantaneous events. Furthermore, I propose that an additional feature of atomicity, which distinguishes between events with plurality and those without, should be added to the binary features of …

The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki Jan 2018

The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In the early 1960s, Ursula Le Guin wrote ‘The Masters’, a short novel that offers a sharp contrast to the ‘maths for all’ discourse of contemporary mathematics education reforms. Le Guin writes of a world – Edun – where ‘mathematical prohibition’ is law. Mathematical reason is banned for all people by the Priests of Edun, and failure to obey is punishable by death. Despite the threat of this totalitarian anti-math regime, some citizens create a collective heterotopia in which they practice mathematics in secret. Le Guin’s story is an opportunity to conduct a thought experiment: ‘what if maths became forbidden?’ …

The Relationship Between Memorable Messages And Identity Construction, Raphaela P. Barros Campbell Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Memorable Messages And Identity Construction, Raphaela P. Barros Campbell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A qualitative analysis is reported here, in which 22 international students were interviewed about their overall experiences studying abroad, as well as memorable messages received and the context in which those were communicated. Scholars like Larson and Gill (2017) and Alvesson (2010) have focused on the role communication plays in constructing identity. With that in mind, Knapp et al.’s (1981) concept of memorable messages informs how specific messages influence individuals’ sense of who they are. This study expands knowledge on the relationship between memorable messages and international students’ identity construction, focusing on the impact of messages exchanged before and during …

The True Purpose Of Mathematics Education: A Provocation, David Kollosche Jan 2018

The True Purpose Of Mathematics Education: A Provocation, David Kollosche

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper features an anecdotic narration in which a fictive narrator, addressing the author of this paper, explains the functional role of mathematics education in the maintenance of the bureaucratic society. Drawing from critical philosophy and critical mathematics education, it is argued that the objective of mathematics education as realised in schools is to teach students to understand, accept, follow or at least ignore pre-defined rules as they are required for the bureaucratic administration of modern society. The theory of the narrator is underpinned with explanations that students offered in an interview study conducted by the author. Rather than supporting …

The Beautiful Game As A Soviet Game: Sportsmanship, Style, And Statecraft During The Golden Age Of Soviet Soccer, Caleb Wright Jan 2018

The Beautiful Game As A Soviet Game: Sportsmanship, Style, And Statecraft During The Golden Age Of Soviet Soccer, Caleb Wright

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

At the end of World War Two, the Soviet Union occupied a new global position and found itself in a Cold War with the West. Cold War conflict occurred in a variety of areas, including military, political, and economic. Additionally, athletics became an arena of direct competition between capitalist and communist nations. Victory in the Olympics, World Cup, and other international tournaments became just as important as economic success or advancements in military technology. In many sports, such as ice hockey, the Soviet Union achieved superiority over the West, but regarding soccer, the nation’s most popular sport, the USSR struggled …

California Creek Quarry: Regional Persepctives And Uas Mapping, David A. Schwab Jan 2018

California Creek Quarry: Regional Persepctives And Uas Mapping, David A. Schwab

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Western Montana hosts an abundance of lithic deposits useful for precontact stone tool manufacturing. Lithic sources likely factored prominently into patterns of settlement, trade, subsistence and mobility for past populations in the region. The mining of these lithic resources results in a unique land use area, a prehistoric quarry. Prehistoric quarries in Western Montana have received very little research or spatial documentation. This may be due in part to their abundance and often overwhelming size and extent. Providing even basic spatial documentation for large quarries can be prohibitively time consuming and expensive. One such understudied quarry site is the California …

Mediating Cultural Border Crossings Between American Indian Tribal College Students And Natural Resources Science Learning Using Culturally Congruent Education, Shandin Hashkeh Pete Jan 2018

Mediating Cultural Border Crossings Between American Indian Tribal College Students And Natural Resources Science Learning Using Culturally Congruent Education, Shandin Hashkeh Pete

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study is motivated by two research questions: (1) How does Culturally Congruent Instruction (CCI) influence American Indian (AI) students' attitudes and achievement in natural resources science at a tribally controlled college/university (TCU)? And (2) What is the nature of the relationship between CCI course modifications and changes (or lack of) in AI students' science attitudes and achievement at a TCU? Findings developed a Culturally Congruent Instructional Framework (CCIF) for use in TCUs and beyond.

Previous research suggest that AI students and tribal college science must find congruence for the student to cross cultural boundaries of the institution. TCUs can …

The Influence Of Directions On Threshold Determination In Audiological Testin, Alison Arthun Apr 2017

The Influence Of Directions On Threshold Determination In Audiological Testin, Alison Arthun

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Speech Pathologists and Audiologists give verbal directions to a client by being as clear as possible for more reliable outcomes. Altering the way a clinician will give directions can alter the outcomes of testing. Client directions can be considered linguistically into categories of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of language. Each of these consider the speaking influence of what we say in different ways. This research project examines how altering the way clinicians deliver verbal directions can alter the clients response in therapy. Placing different connotations with modifications to supra-segmental features throughout the instructional sentences and directions to …

Iggy Azalea's Dialectal Disguise: A Pursuit Of Power Through Speech And Privilege, Caroline Jh Allen Apr 2017

Iggy Azalea's Dialectal Disguise: A Pursuit Of Power Through Speech And Privilege, Caroline Jh Allen

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

White Australian hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea has been the subject of recent criticism forher use of African American English (AAE). Eberhardt and Freeman (2015) demonstratethat Iggy, a native speaker of Australian English who uses Australian English in all of herpublic speech, makes consistent and context-sensitive use of AAE throughout her entirediscography. In order to account for this unique behavior, Eberhardt and Freeman use thetheoretical notion of linguistic appropriation (Hill 2008) which describes the powerimbalance evident when outgroup members (e.g. Iggy) benefit from the use of certainvarieties of speech that ingroup members (e.g. speakers of AAE) are stigmatized forusing. Drawing on …

Linguistically Based Spelling Analysis And Its Relation To Early School Literacy Success, Morgan B. Williams Apr 2017

Linguistically Based Spelling Analysis And Its Relation To Early School Literacy Success, Morgan B. Williams

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to 1) examine the sensitivity of a linguistically based spelling analysis compared that to an all-or-none traditional scoring system when determining spelling ability, and 2) determine how these scoring systems relate to young school-age children’s language and reading success. Significance. Spelling is a language or linguistically-based skill (Apel & Masterson, 2001; Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, & Johnston, 2004; Ehri, 2000; Henderson, 1990; Moats, 2009; Treiman, Cassar, & Zukowski, 1994), and the awareness of sounds in words (phonological awareness), knowledge of the spelling patterns in words (orthographic knowledge), understanding of relationships among base words …

Vocabulary And Morphological Awareness Development In Young Children, Maya Z. Anger, Kelcie Cassidy, Mogan Williams, Cheska Deitsch, Sarah Moen, Julie Wolter Apr 2017

Vocabulary And Morphological Awareness Development In Young Children, Maya Z. Anger, Kelcie Cassidy, Mogan Williams, Cheska Deitsch, Sarah Moen, Julie Wolter

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Purpose. The purpose of this small feasibility study is to provide data to inform the use of a experimenter-developed task, the Morphological Awareness Semantics Task to examine the vocabulary conceptualization in kindergarten children’s development of morphological (word meaning) in a child-friendly paradigm. Significance. Morphological awareness refers to the smallest linguistic unit of meaning where base words and affixes come together to form new meaning (teach to teacher has a new meaning). There is now good evidence that children rely on morphemes when developing vocabulary and reading (Carlisle & Stone, 2005; Deacon, Whalen, & Kirby, 2011; Wolter, Wood, D'Zatko, 2009). Children’s …
