Functional Reasoning And Working With Functions: Functions/Mappings In Mathematics Teaching Tradition In Hungary And Germany, Gabriella Ambrus, Andreas Filler, Odon Vancso
Functional Reasoning And Working With Functions: Functions/Mappings In Mathematics Teaching Tradition In Hungary And Germany, Gabriella Ambrus, Andreas Filler, Odon Vancso
The Mathematics Enthusiast
After a short survey of the genesis of the ideas behind “functional reasoning” in mathematics education at the beginning of the 20th century, the development and implementation of these ideas in both parts of Germany and in Hungary in the second half of the 20th century are discussed and compared. The ideas of Felix Klein had a strong influence in both countries. However, from the 1950’s to the 1970’s (the period of “New Math”) an attempt was made to teach functions and mappings in a more abstract sense, involving both elementary (real-valued) functions and geometric transformations. In the 1970’s and …

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this article, we explore affordances of adopting the framework of praxeology by Chevallard in the analysis of mathematics classroom communication in relation to the communication in a textbook. While adopting praxeology, we carried out detailed analysis of communication in both classroom data and textbooks. The construed praxeologies describe the organisation of knowledge expressed for the same type of task in both classroom and textbook. The praxeologies were compared, with specific attention to the teacher’s practice. This analysis illuminates how teachers’ practices, realised in classroom communication, may be compared to other texts describing the same topics, with a focus on …

Suprasegmental Production By American Learners Of Japanese: A Phonetic Investigation, Yuna Hiranuma
Suprasegmental Production By American Learners Of Japanese: A Phonetic Investigation, Yuna Hiranuma
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
This research examines second language acquisition (SLA) of English speakers learning Japanese by investigating how acoustic features of the first language influence the learners’ pronunciation. According to the theoretical notion of language transfer in SLA, linguistic features of learners’ first language emerge in their pronunciation of second language (Saville-Troike, 2006). Linguistic features concerned here are phonetic elements of word prominence (strongest part of a word). Beckman (1984; 1989) claims that English is considered a stress-accent language in which prominence is indicated by the combination of pitch and loudness, whereas Japanese is a pitch-accent language in which prominence is solely indicated …
Analyzing Speech Samples In Support Of A Psycholinguistic Approach To Speech And Literacy Difficulties, Carley J. Stone, Margot Diffendaffer
Analyzing Speech Samples In Support Of A Psycholinguistic Approach To Speech And Literacy Difficulties, Carley J. Stone, Margot Diffendaffer
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The paper Intervention for a Child with Persisting Speech and Literacy Difficulties: A Psycholinguistic Approach Joy Stackhouse, Michelle Pascoe, and Hilary Gardner illustrates a psycholinguistic approach to investigating childhood speech and literacy difficulties. A psycholinguistic approach claims that that speech and literacy development is the product of an intact speech processing system composed of speech input processing, stored word representations, and speech output processing.
The study examined the relationship among measures (PCC(percentage consonants correct), sound inventory, and word shapes) used in assessing the connected speech samples of children ages 3-7 years old who have difficulty learning speech sounds. Speech-language therapists …
Assessments To Enhance The Psycholinguistic Approach For Speech Sound Problems, Jeffrey D. Wigmore, Paige N. Hillman
Assessments To Enhance The Psycholinguistic Approach For Speech Sound Problems, Jeffrey D. Wigmore, Paige N. Hillman
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
When clinicians can pin-point exactly where a speech issue is originating in a child’s speech-language system, they can help the child learn more efficiently; this results in a quicker therapy process. Stackhouse, Pascoe, and Gardner (2006), presented an approach to speech therapy intervention which incorporated a three-way method. In their psycholinguistic approach, they gathered information about incoming speech, how the information was stored and processed, and the resulting production of speech by one child with a speech delay. This approach offered a more effective way to plan treatment. The current study’s goal was to explore the relationships among measures that …
Language In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen
Language In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
A totalistic social group is defined as a collection of individuals who share similar values and goals and who live together within intensive boundaries enforced by the group’s leadership and/or members themselves (Lifton 1969). The focus of this project is to better understand the effect of language on (I) a totalistic group’s social structure and (II) the ideologies and actions of members. The limited linguistic research on totalistic groups claims that leaders and members use language in order to enforce rules and beliefs, encourage conformity, and maintain as well as increase membership. By examining language practices in the US military, …
Pedagogy Of Pitch In Second Language Learners Of Blackfoot, Naatosi I. Fish
Pedagogy Of Pitch In Second Language Learners Of Blackfoot, Naatosi I. Fish
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Abstract Pedagogy of Pitch in L2 Blackfoot Pitch in Blackfoot is characterized by the raising of relative pitch on a syllable in a word. Pitch is not a consciously recognized piece of information among native speakers or teachers. However, pitch is important as it impacts the meaning of words. This study looks at the efficacy of visual guides for Blackfoot pronunciation of pitch by second language learners. I hypothesized that use of visual assistance would improve pitch pronunciation in second language learners. Subjects were nine Blackfoot learners recruited on campus. Participants were shown 15 words with images and asked to pronounce …
Uncovering The Rules Of Language: What The Case Of The Word 'Glimpse' Can Teach Us, Jessica Holtz
Uncovering The Rules Of Language: What The Case Of The Word 'Glimpse' Can Teach Us, Jessica Holtz
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Humans are able to naturally produce grammatical sentences they’ve never heard before in their native languages and have others understand what they mean, an amazing feat for a process which we go through daily without much effort. Languages are rule-governed and systematic in ways that are sometimes not so transparent. These rules are what create the structure within a language, making it learnable and usable. By studying these rules and systems we can better understand how the human brain processes and produces language (Pinker, 2007). One way in which we classify verbs in order to better understand them is to …
Portrayal Of Married And Unmarried Women In Bhojpuri Folksongs, Srijeet Mukherjee
Portrayal Of Married And Unmarried Women In Bhojpuri Folksongs, Srijeet Mukherjee
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Folksongs and traditional music have for long been an area of study. Traditional music "reveals especially the individual views, customs and prejudices of a people” (Engel 1866: 6, 206). Bhojpuri people, culture and language originate from parts of southern Nepal, various districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Western Bihar and some areas of Jharkhand in India. The Bhojpuri people have a lasting tradition of folksongs which have centuries of history affiliated with them and the inventory of these folk songs is still flourishing. Bhojpuri folksongs depict patrilocal, patriarchal and patrilineal Hindu joint families and women in the Bhojpuri society have for …
Communication Accommodation In Technologically-Mediated Conflict Between Romantic Partners, Benjamin Wassink, Callie Parrish, Mira Cleveland
Communication Accommodation In Technologically-Mediated Conflict Between Romantic Partners, Benjamin Wassink, Callie Parrish, Mira Cleveland
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
This study explores communication accommodation via technologically-mediated (e.g., text message) conversations of romantic couples. Although research has previously examined how partners engage in accommodation through face-to-face communication, less is known concerning how accommodation functions over text message, particularly when couples engage in conflict. Participants (N = 28) completed an online survey, where they provided two text conversations with their partner: one on a “good” day in their relationship, and one on a “bad” day. Using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC, 2015), we measured participants’ language matching in each conversation. Additionally, participants completed scales indicating perceived self- and partner-accommodation levels …

Article V, Section 12 Of The Montana Constitution: Restoring Meaning To A Forgotten Provision, Constance Van Kley
Montana Law Review
The Montana Supreme Court does not—and should not—hesitate to refuse to “march lock-step” with the United States Supreme Court, “even where the state constitutional provision at issue is nearly identical to its federal counterpart.” However, in interpreting Montana’s constitutional restriction on special legislation, the Court has done the opposite, applying a federal constitutional test to a state constitutional provision with no federal counterpart.
Article V, Section 12 of the Montana Constitution provides: Local and special legislation. The legislature shall not pass a special or local act when a general act is, or can be made, applicable.
Section 12 can and …
