Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean Apr 2021

Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

All nouns, determiners, and many adjectives in the Spanish language are grammatically designated as either masculine or feminine, and the default is always the masculine form. For example, “the tall boy” in Spanish is “el chico alto”, “the tall girl” is “la chica alta”, and if there is a group of tall children the plural form is the masculine “los chicos altos” even if there are females in the group. This binary gender division and masculine default can cause harm, however, when used in reference to women and non-binary people. This paper explores the recent movement to include a third …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

An Exploration of Ethnobotanically Significant Plants to the Native American Tribes of Montana

Ethnobotany is the study of the human uses of plants; for the Native Tribes of Montana these uses refer to everything from food, to ceremony, to medicine and everything in between. As a collaboration with the Payne Family Native American Center Ethnobotanical gardens, I conducted research on the various plants and their uses that are of particular significance to the 12 Tribes and 7 reservations across the state of MT. I collected information from first-hand experience working as an intern at the ethnobotanical garden, through discussions lead …

A Stick For A Crib: A Digital Story Inspired By The Northern Cheyenne Culture, Chloe Erin Ortega Apr 2021

A Stick For A Crib: A Digital Story Inspired By The Northern Cheyenne Culture, Chloe Erin Ortega

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The purpose of this project is to create a digital story book which engages in the cultural preservation and language revitalization of the Northern Cheyenne, the tribe in Eastern Montana where I am an enrolled member. In this presentation, I will describe the steps I took for this project. First, I gathered material from personal experience and analyzed it working with community members, elders, and linguist mentors. For this project, I selected the Northern Cheyenne cultural teaching: “Put a stick above the crib to ward off bad spirits and keep away bad dreams.” I built a story in English, surrounding …

What's In A Pronoun: The Effect Of Default Pronouns On Opinions Of Grsm Rights, Rachel N. Cebull Apr 2021

What's In A Pronoun: The Effect Of Default Pronouns On Opinions Of Grsm Rights, Rachel N. Cebull

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Tavits and Pérez discovered that usage of gender-neutral pronouns in Sweden correlated with higher acceptance of women and LGBTQ+ individuals, and I decided to see if that effect could be replicated in the USA. In this study, I am replicating Tavits and Pérez’s 2019 study, “Language influences mass opinion toward gender and LGBT equality.” I surveyed a sample of 161 individuals and gave them a priming task where they had to write a few sentences using an assigned set of pronouns. The assigned pronouns were he/him, she/her, they/them, and ze/zir. After that, participants were asked to write about a hypothetical …

Planning Beyond The Pandemic: Assessing The Value Of Alternative Exchange Programs, Chloe Loeffelholz, Camryn Vaughn, Makkie Haller, Taylor Gregory Apr 2021

Planning Beyond The Pandemic: Assessing The Value Of Alternative Exchange Programs, Chloe Loeffelholz, Camryn Vaughn, Makkie Haller, Taylor Gregory

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Intercultural exchange programs have been shown to increase critical thinking skills, cross-cultural communication abilities, and provide intercultural perspectives to participants. Unfortunately, fewer than 11% of undergraduate students study abroad, which means an majority of college students are not able to participate in the life-changing experiences that come with global immersion. This is largely due to the many barriers to access that currently exist for these programs, including lack of finances, lack of awareness, work and family commitments, and concerns about timely graduation. Another current concern is the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted a large number of in-person exchanges in 2020 and …

Classroom Language Socialization: Language Acquisition, Educator Beliefs, And Intercultural Communicative Competence, Rebekah M. Skoog Feb 2021

Classroom Language Socialization: Language Acquisition, Educator Beliefs, And Intercultural Communicative Competence, Rebekah M. Skoog

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Classroom Language Socialization:

Language acquisition, educator beliefs and intercultural communicative competence

Language and culture are intricately intertwined. In the past, language structure was thought to be the “purist” form of culture, but then the work of Dell Hymes (1972) on communicative competence and the relationship between language and culture brought a shift to the way language systems were understood. Rather than being studied separately from their communicative act, Hymes argued for the need to understand language through context. With the help of Canale and Swain (1980) these ideas about language brought a shift in educational literature and consequently the design …

Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr Feb 2021

Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

According to one study, lemons are depicted in fifty-one percent of a sampling of Netherlandish paintings between 1500 and 1650, a time known as the Dutch Golden Age, as opposed to sixteen percent of Italian works made during the same period. Horticulturally, citrus plants flourish much easier in the warm Mediterranean climate, requiring special orangery hothouses to survive the cold Netherlandish winter, leading to the question as to why lemons were such a popular subject matter for Dutch painters. I have used a multivalent historical, socio-cultural, economic, and literary approach to attempt an interpretation of the lemon as object, subject, …

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten Jan 2021

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Drawing on the Semiotic-cultural approach and the Anthropological theory of the didactic, this paper discusses how exploration of historically framed conceptualizations of mathematical objects can establish bridges between different mathematical areas such as calculus and Euclidean geometry. A classroom intervention study in two secondary mathematics class-rooms involving dynamic geometry software tools to support the construction of a parabola and its tangent and aiming at the development of representational flexibility between algebraic/ functional and geometrical approaches, illustrates how students may benefit from participation in such explorations.

Energy Islands: Metaphors Of Power, Extractivism, And Justice In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onís Jan 2021

Energy Islands: Metaphors Of Power, Extractivism, And Justice In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onís

University of Montana Staff Publications

Energy Islands provides an urgent and nuanced portrait of collective action that resists racial capitalism, colonialism, and climate disruption. Weaving together historical and ethnographic research, Catalina M. de Onís challenges the master narratives of Puerto Rico as a tourist destination and site of “natural” disasters. She demonstrates how fossil-fuel economies are inextricably entwined with colonial practices and policies and how local community groups in Puerto Rico have struggled against energy coloniality and energy privilege to mobilize and transform power from the ground up. This work decenters continental contexts and deconstructs damaging hierarchies that devalue and exploit disenfranchised rural, coastal communities. …

Indigenous Culture-Based School Mathematics In Action: Part I: Professional Development For Creating Teaching Materials, Sharon Meyer, Glen Aikenhead Jan 2021

Indigenous Culture-Based School Mathematics In Action: Part I: Professional Development For Creating Teaching Materials, Sharon Meyer, Glen Aikenhead

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This first of a pair of articles describes a professional development project that prepared four non-Indigenous mathematics teachers (Grades 5-12) to implement Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC, 2016) notion of reconciliation: cross-cultural respect through mutual understanding. The researchers collaboratively mentored the teachers to enhance their mathematics teaching with Indigenous mathematizing3. The teachers’ focus was on developing and revising lesson plans for other teachers to teach. This process explicitly and implicitly revealed precise supports that need to be in place for a teacher to succeed at innovating with this Indigenous culture-based school mathematics (ICBSM). Part I is a template for …

The Backfiring Effects Of Forced Political Allegiance In The Online World: The Case Of Preferred Pronouns On Twitter, Yin Lok Linus Chan Jan 2021

The Backfiring Effects Of Forced Political Allegiance In The Online World: The Case Of Preferred Pronouns On Twitter, Yin Lok Linus Chan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Political divisions in the United States have led to conflating political issues with political parties. People who possess a set of intercorrelated beliefs (e.g. pro-immigration, prochoice) are assumed to be liberal, while those who hold opposing intercorrelated beliefs are assumed to be conservative. Impression management research suggests that in the online world, minor cues on one’s social media profile that display political beliefs serve as indicators of people’s political ideology. While people are free to declare their political views on personal social media accounts, what happens when people perceive that they are forced to appear aligned with one political group …

School Leadership Under Apartheid South Africa As Portrayed In The Apartheid Archive Projectand Interpreted Through Freirean Education, Kevin Bruce Deitle

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to examine how teachers, school leaders, and students rationalize their roles in the educational process when their institution is bounded by an educational system that openly strives against them. For a context, this study examined apartheid-era South Africa, from 1948 to 1994, which established social and administrative policies that deliberately curtailed the education of Indigenous and other South Africans, as a means of oppressing non-European ethnic groups.

In lieu of face-to-face interviews, stories and interviews submitted to The Apartheid Archive Project, curated by the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, portrayed …

Mapping Ethnophysiographies: An Investigation Of Toponyms And Land Cover Of Missoula County, Montana, Emily L. Cahoon

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis investigates the ethnophysiography of Missoula County, Montana via place names. Toponyms and landscape have been observed to have a relationship that can be studied through many lenses. Ethnophysiography, the study of how language and landscape relate to each other via human conceptualization, is a lens that was applied to this thesis because it recognizes the embodied information that toponyms carry and investigates landscape accordingly. Thus, the following research seeks to understand if ethnophysiographic diversity exists between toponyms in the Salish and English languages of Missoula County, Montana by analyzing place names and land cover in GIS and analyzing …

Antiracism, Reflection, And Professional Identity, Andrew King-Ries, Monte Mills, Eduardo R.C. Capulong

Faculty Law Review Articles

Intent on more systematically developing the emerging professional identities of law students, the professional identity formation movement is recasting how we think about legal education. Notably, however, the movement overlooks the structural racism imbedded in American law and legal education. While current models of professional development value diversity and cross-cultural competence, they do not adequately prepare the next generation of legal professionals to engage in the sustained work of interrupting and overthrowing race and racism in the legal profession and system. This article argues that antiracism is essential to the profession’s responsibility to serve justice and therefore key to legal …

Service Learning, Sustainable Development, And The Tourism Sector In Conflict-Affected Bamyan, Afghanistan, Kelly Elizabeth Franklin

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Widespread consensus among the tourism and development studies literature suggests that higher education plays a key role in the achievement of sustainable tourism development. However, discussions on approaches to teaching sustainability in tourism at the higher education level are underdeveloped, especially in conflict-affected contexts. To address this gap, this study combines an examination of tourism stakeholders’ perceptions of inclusive and sustainable tourism development for a small tourism sector in Bamyan, Afghanistan, with an innovative approach to teaching sustainability in a tourism higher education program. Using mixed qualitative methods, this dissertation first examines tourism stakeholders’ perceptions of inclusive and sustainable tourism …
