Big Events, Little Change: Extreme Climatic Events Have No Region-Wide Effect On Great Barrier Reef Governance, Amber Datta, Michele L. Barnes, Brian C. Chaffin, Theresa M. Floyd, Tiffany Morrison, Sarah Sutcliffe Jan 2022

Big Events, Little Change: Extreme Climatic Events Have No Region-Wide Effect On Great Barrier Reef Governance, Amber Datta, Michele L. Barnes, Brian C. Chaffin, Theresa M. Floyd, Tiffany Morrison, Sarah Sutcliffe

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Extreme climatic events trigger changes in ecosystems with potential negative impacts for people. These events may provide an opportunity for environmental managers and decision-makers to improve the governance of social-ecological systems, however there is conflicting evidence regarding whether these actors are indeed able to change governance after extreme climatic events. In addition, the majority of research to date has focused on changes in specific policies or organizations after crises. A broader investigation of governance actors’ activities is needed to more fully understand whether or not crises trigger change. Here we demonstrate the use of a social network analysis of management …

A Social Network Perspective On Workplace Inclusion: The Role Of Network Closure, Network Centrality, And Need For Affiliation, Travis J. Grosser, Christopher M. Sterling, Rohit S. Piplani, Kristin L. Cullen-Lester, Theresa M. Floyd Jan 2022

A Social Network Perspective On Workplace Inclusion: The Role Of Network Closure, Network Centrality, And Need For Affiliation, Travis J. Grosser, Christopher M. Sterling, Rohit S. Piplani, Kristin L. Cullen-Lester, Theresa M. Floyd

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Organizations are increasingly recognizing the important role employee inclusion perceptions play in promoting positive employee attitudes and behaviors. Although social networks are frequently cited as being a driver of perceived inclusion, little empirical work has examined the social network conditions that give rise to it. We address this gap by examining how both network position (indegree centrality) and network structure (network closure) relate to perceived workplace inclusion. We test our hypotheses with a sample of 364 professionals in a multinational pharmaceutical firm. We find that both indegree centrality and network closure are positively related to perceived workplace inclusion. The relationship …

The concept of adaptive capacity has received significant attention within social-ecological and environmental change research. Within both the resilience and vulnerability literatures specifically, adaptive capacity has emerged as a fundamental concept for assessing the ability of social-ecological systems to adapt to environmental change. Although methods and indicators used to evaluate adaptive capacity are broad, the focus of existing scholarship has predominately been at the individual- and household- levels. However, the capacities necessary for humans to adapt to global environmental change are often a function of individual and societal characteristics, as well as cumulative and emergent capacities across communities and jurisdictions. …

Mathematical Learning Difficulties: A Subjective Production, Amanda Marina Andrade Medeiros, Cristiano Alberto Muniz Jan 2022

Mathematical Learning Difficulties: A Subjective Production, Amanda Marina Andrade Medeiros, Cristiano Alberto Muniz

The Mathematics Enthusiast

It is necessary to expand the analysis about affective processes in mathematic learning in different contexts. In Brazil this research area is still in the embryonic phase, but it is a space that has strong potential to respond the gaps that still exist in the field, leading to the understanding affective processes in mathematic learning. It is in this way that the present research aims to analyze how the mathematic learning difficulty is produced in the subjectivity of a child from the elementary school in Brazil. To understand how the student's development occurs in the school space, and how the …

A Look At The National Pact For Literacy At The Right Age In The Mathematics Education Context, Carlos Roberto Vianna, Elenilton Vieira Godoy, Emerson Rolkouski

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article aims to present a public policy of large-scale literacy teachers continued training, the Pacto Nacional pela Alfabetização na Idade Certa (PNAIC), making a summary of the Brazilian dissertations and theses results which approached this public policy in the context of Mathematical Education. The set of works analyzed was divided into three groups, according to their …

Linear Programming Analysis And Diet Breadth Modeling At Bridge River, British Columbia, Sean Patrick Boyd Jan 2022

Linear Programming Analysis And Diet Breadth Modeling At Bridge River, British Columbia, Sean Patrick Boyd

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studies in diet breadth modeling and patch choice have been and continue to be a hot topic of interest among practitioners of human behavioral ecology and the set of data available at Bridge River can certainly add to these debates and discussions that have been dominating anthropology in the past few decades. The faunal assemblage of Housepit 54’s 17 anthropogenic floors have provided researchers with a plethora of data that clearly indicates periods of resource depletion and partial to full site abandonment. Using Linear Programming and Diet Breadth Modelling I analyze the most represented species in the record and establish …

From Zero-Sum To Economic Partners: Reframing State Tax Policies In Indian Country In The Post-Covid Economy, Pippa Browde Jan 2022

From Zero-Sum To Economic Partners: Reframing State Tax Policies In Indian Country In The Post-Covid Economy, Pippa Browde

Faculty Law Review Articles

The disparate impact COVID-19 has had on Indian Country
reveals problems centuries in the making from the legacy of
colonialism. One of those problems is state encroachment in
Indian Country, including attempts to assert taxing authority
within Indian Country. The issue of the reaches of state taxing
authority in Indian Country has resulted in law that is both
uncertain and highly complex, chilling both outside investment
and economic development for tribes.
As the United States emerges from COVID-19, to focus only on the
toll exacted on tribes and their peoples ignores the tremendous
opportunities for states to right these historical …

Exclusionary Effects Of Campsite Allocation Through Reservations In U.S. National Parks: Evidence From Mobile Device Location Data, William L. Rice, Jaclyn R. Rushing, Jennifer M. Thomsen, Peter Whitney Jan 2022

Exclusionary Effects Of Campsite Allocation Through Reservations In U.S. National Parks: Evidence From Mobile Device Location Data, William L. Rice, Jaclyn R. Rushing, Jennifer M. Thomsen, Peter Whitney

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Campsites represent highly-sought-after recreational amenities in the national parks of the United States. Equitable allocation of scarce recreational resources has long been a key management issue in U.S. national parks, but has become increasingly difficult in an era of increasing demand. At present, a growing number of national park campsites are allocated through an online reservation system well-in-advance of a camper’s arrival at a park. Compounding the challenge of allocating these campsites is a long history of exclusivity within national park camping—institutionalized through campground design and predicated on a legacy of the leisure class’s affinity for camping in national parks. …
