Native American Cultural Dissonance & Dark Heritage Solutions, Victoria Parker Mar 2019

Native American Cultural Dissonance & Dark Heritage Solutions, Victoria Parker

Student Scholarship

This paper argues that public institutions have an obligation to consider the weight of their responsibility to educate and inform the public about all forms of American history and heritage. Moreover, public institutions should embrace controversy, engage discourse and proactively work on exhibiting balanced representations by re-working or removing antiquated and false narratives surrounding Native American history. In this paper, I proffer solutions from case studies, examples, models, and my own perspective as a Native American tribal member, as to what public institutions and curators can do in the future to deal with cultural dissonance and creating awareness of (Native) …

Historic Costume In Science Fiction And Fantasy Film, Jennifer Jones Feb 2019

Historic Costume In Science Fiction And Fantasy Film, Jennifer Jones

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Science Fiction and Fantasy are two genres which have captured the imagination of a generation of audiences. Frequently authors of such works base descriptions of clothing, jewelry, and hair on historical costume, giving readers and viewers a sense of connection to the events in the story. The design of these worn articles often furthers the observer’s perceptions of the characters, telling an unspoken story of who they are as people. Additionally, the choice of garments used in a performance informs the observer of the character’s personality, social status and place in society. This poster will investigate the use of historically …

Patient Perspectives Of An Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program For Stroke Survivors, Anya Leyhe Feb 2019

Patient Perspectives Of An Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program For Stroke Survivors, Anya Leyhe

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Individuals with aphasia who participate in intensive post-stroke language rehabilitation programs make a variety of significant investments. Investments involve commitment across many domains including: time, finance, family participation, temporary relocation, as well as cognitive, physical, and emotional exertion. While intensive aphasia programs and intensive comprehensive aphasia programs (ICAPs) are becoming increasingly prevalent across health care settings (Rodriguez et al., 2017; Rose, et al 2013), and language-based and psychosocial outcomes are beginning to be reported in the literature (e.g., Babbitt, Worrall, & Cherney, 2015; Hoover, Caplan, Waters, & Carney, 2017), patient perspectives have yet to be explored. As health care moves …

Gained In Translation: Storytelling Through Theatrical Innovation, Shane Lutz Feb 2019

Gained In Translation: Storytelling Through Theatrical Innovation, Shane Lutz

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

As an artist, I am a challenger, a revolutionary, and an explorer - in no particular order. Swedish playwright August Strindberg believed that “society is so horribly regimented” in its obtuse ideas of art, resulting in a drastic stagnation of theatrical innovation. This remains as real today as it did when Strindberg flipped the theatrical tradition on its head in the late 19th Century. I believe that by deconstructing the ideals that have been ingrained into us in terms of what theatre can and cannot be, we can redefine an outdated and inaccessible art form to reach audiences across time …

The Holistic Power Of Young Adult Books, Donna Lynn Miller Feb 2019

The Holistic Power Of Young Adult Books, Donna Lynn Miller

The Montana English Journal

Young adult books like The Art of Starving by Sam J. Miller carry a healing power when readers experience their pause and ponder moments. Because they impose reflection time, Pause and Ponder Moments reinforce reading as a deliberate and patient process. Imposing time to pause and think through points and concepts enables readers to truly grapple with content in meaningful ways. Pause and Ponder Moments also inspire attributional retraining and option awareness, an alternative to simply accepting the status quo. These moments carry promise for enriching how we read the world, how we respond to others, and how we live …

Leveraging Technology To Build Professional Communities For Teachers In Montana, Christy Mock-Stutz Feb 2019

Leveraging Technology To Build Professional Communities For Teachers In Montana, Christy Mock-Stutz

The Montana English Journal

Providing equitable professional learning for educators across Montana is a challenge. In the Content Standards and Instruction (CSI) Division at the Office of Public Instruction, we often grapple with the how to provide equitable access to high quality professional learning for all teachers. With so many teachers living in distant places and without easy access to the larger towns and cities that often host professional learning events, how can we provide up-to-date learning? Technology is a powerful tool to help us bridge the distance.

Reputation And Rurality: Using A Montana-Authored Text To Talk About Agency And Language In The Secondary English Classroom, Catherine Dorian Feb 2019

Reputation And Rurality: Using A Montana-Authored Text To Talk About Agency And Language In The Secondary English Classroom, Catherine Dorian

The Montana English Journal

This article offers curriculum as well as rationale for teaching Debra Magpie Earling’s Montana-based novel, Perma Red. I begin with my own experience teaching the novel as it stumbled into my lap as and meandered its way into my rural classroom, where Earling’s language challenges students to deconstruct and further understand issues in agency pertaining to sexual assault and consent. Then, I explain methods and strategies I use to teach language and close-reading to my twelfth grade students while they read this novel, my aim being to make teaching this unit as accessible as possible for all Montana teachers. …

Montana Shape Poem/What Makes A State?, Alan Hoffmann Feb 2019

Montana Shape Poem/What Makes A State?, Alan Hoffmann

The Montana English Journal

Savage teamed up with the Yellowstone Writing Project in order to foster a writing community at Savage Schools. As part of that process, teacher leaders in Savage had to write original works for discussion. This is one of those pieces. During this time, I became interested in word art, and set out to see if I could create something. The poem is inspired by the book Fifty-Six Counties by Russell Rowland as well as by the works of Mark Z. Danielewski. The small font size represents all of the little things that go into making a state what it is. …

Collaborating Across Levels To Assess Dual Enrollment Writ101: College Writing, Jan Clinard Ed.D.

The Montana English Journal

Helena College hosted a Writing Assessment Workshop to ensure that high school and college instructors of College Writing (WRIT101) grade student work using the same standards and that high school students are writing at the same level as their college peers. Key to a successful outcome was developing a scoring rubric that reflected the published outcomes of the course, collecting student papers, and providing teachers with a collaborative atmosphere to discuss their approaches to evaluating student writing. This article describes the development process, the scoring protocol, and results of the assessment.

Using 3d Card-Making Project To Motivate Students’ Writing, Dan Li Feb 2019

Using 3d Card-Making Project To Motivate Students’ Writing, Dan Li

The Montana English Journal

Based on the ideas of inclusive education and multiple intelligences, I advocate using a “3D card” project to inspire students' writing. A 3D card project incorporates sessions on organization's logo appreciation, discussion, letter design, slogan design, and 3D card making as well as a writing task. All of these steps provide students with background information on the topic. In this article, I use these steps to teach my diverse middle school students to design a logo and write a statement for a nonprofit organization.
