An Analysis Of The Influences Of A Hybrid Learning Environment In The Solution Of Vector Tasks According To The Anthropological Theory Of The Didactic (Atd), Jany Santos Souza Goulart, Luiz Márcio Santos Farias, Hamid Chaachoua
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper discusses a part of a doctoral study based on the theoretical pillars of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). Supported by this theory, our research interest followed a path that led us to the teaching of the mathematical object vector and its institutional configuration in a Mathematics Teaching course at Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), in the state of Bahia, Brazil, centered on two dichotomous aspects. The first one refers to the possibility of application and institutional relevance of this mathematical object. The second aspect is related to the obstacles encountered in the didactical scope, …

How To Engender Learning In The Learning Process? Mathematics, Events And The Invention Of A Mathematical Education, Sônia Maria Clareto, Giovani Cammarota
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This article proposes an exercise of problematization and denaturalization of a math classroom that is born from research carried out with a cartographic approach, in which, when occupying the elementary school math classroom, questions are asked: what happens in a math classroom? Which mathematics happens in a classroom? The event is here in affinity with the philosophy of the event of Gilles Deleuze, in which event is that which cuts time off, drags it, breaks it. Events are possible worlds that erupt in the things that happen. To do so, the writing of this paper takes place in relation to …

Digital Literacy Skills For Family History Research, Jaci Wilkinson, Natalie Bond
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
Objective – In this case study, an archivist and librarian teamed up to teach an introductory course on family history research for adult learners at their university’s lifelong learning centre. In response to students’ relative lack of digital skills, the instructors developed a new set of introductory skills that they believe are essential for genealogy research.
Methods – Authors conducted pre- and post-course surveys to determine student expectations and the extent to which the course met those expectations. Authors coded one of these surveys.
Results – Course assessment and class activities exposed the need for a set of digital skills …

Curriculum Design With The End In Mind: Creating An Interdisciplinary Unit On Climate Change, Sydney Anne Roberts
Curriculum Design With The End In Mind: Creating An Interdisciplinary Unit On Climate Change, Sydney Anne Roberts
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The purpose of my research project was to design an interdisciplinary unit around the concept of climate change. Climate change is an essential topic to cover due to its global implications. It has a broad interdisciplinary application which emphasizes the importance of teaching climate change through an interconnected lens. This unit was designed for high school students and integrates the disciplines of Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. I employed backwards curriculum design methods to construct this unit (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). Backwards curriculum design allows teachers to focus their lessons on an explicit end goal and evaluate if …
Supporting Middle-Elementary-Age, Second-Language English Speakers: The Effects Of Student-Centered Learning And Scaffolding, Madison Baroch
Supporting Middle-Elementary-Age, Second-Language English Speakers: The Effects Of Student-Centered Learning And Scaffolding, Madison Baroch
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest-growing demographic in K-12 classrooms across the United States (National Education Association, 2020). Often, due to a lack of specialized ESL (English as a second language) programs, ELL students are directly placed into a mainstream classroom with no additional support. This tasks teachers with attending to ELLs’ unique needs while also instructing the entire class. Scaffolding is a teaching method that utilizes a student-centered learning (SCL) approach, and it has been increasingly incorporated by educators to enhance student engagement and performance. While positive effects of scaffolding have been reported, its effectiveness when utilized with …
Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean
Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
All nouns, determiners, and many adjectives in the Spanish language are grammatically designated as either masculine or feminine, and the default is always the masculine form. For example, “the tall boy” in Spanish is “el chico alto”, “the tall girl” is “la chica alta”, and if there is a group of tall children the plural form is the masculine “los chicos altos” even if there are females in the group. This binary gender division and masculine default can cause harm, however, when used in reference to women and non-binary people. This paper explores the recent movement to include a third …
A Stick For A Crib: A Digital Story Inspired By The Northern Cheyenne Culture, Chloe Erin Ortega
A Stick For A Crib: A Digital Story Inspired By The Northern Cheyenne Culture, Chloe Erin Ortega
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The purpose of this project is to create a digital story book which engages in the cultural preservation and language revitalization of the Northern Cheyenne, the tribe in Eastern Montana where I am an enrolled member. In this presentation, I will describe the steps I took for this project. First, I gathered material from personal experience and analyzed it working with community members, elders, and linguist mentors. For this project, I selected the Northern Cheyenne cultural teaching: “Put a stick above the crib to ward off bad spirits and keep away bad dreams.” I built a story in English, surrounding …
A Technologically Enhanced Introduction To Creative Writing --Instructional Unit Plan, Evangeline Campbell
A Technologically Enhanced Introduction To Creative Writing --Instructional Unit Plan, Evangeline Campbell
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Technologically Enhanced Introduction to Creative Writing Unit Plan
My educational unit plan serves as an 9th & 10th grade Introduction to Creative Writing. Each lesson includes guiding questions, learning outcomes, content standards, and step-by-step instructional activities. As it spans over poetry, prose, nonfiction, and fiction, the unit plan will serve, for students, as an introduction to Creative Writing and, for educators, as an avenue for integrating different styles of technology into their teaching repertoire.
With the assistance of my mentor, I crafted each lesson around the Creative Writing content and skills most precedent for 9th and 10th graders. The addition …
Intersectional Feminism And Diverse Perspectives In Contemporary Romance, Abigail L. Nordstrom
Intersectional Feminism And Diverse Perspectives In Contemporary Romance, Abigail L. Nordstrom
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The lack of intersectional feminism and diverse perspectives has long been a critique of the literary canon. While the Academy has shifted toward a more progressive course of literary study in recent decades, there are still some genres that are treated as undeserving of scholarly analysis in spite of their unique and diverse perspectives. The contemporary romance genre embodies the very intersectional feminism that the traditional literary canon lacks, yet it is still treated as unworthy of consideration. Contemporary romance novels such as The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert and The Bromance …

The Effectiveness Of Prescribed Physical Activity For The Treatment Of Post-Concussive Symptoms In An Athletic Population: A Systematic Review., Kayla B. Schmidt, Nicholas Costa
The Effectiveness Of Prescribed Physical Activity For The Treatment Of Post-Concussive Symptoms In An Athletic Population: A Systematic Review., Kayla B. Schmidt, Nicholas Costa
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Mild traumatic brain injuries, otherwise known as concussions, are a low level brain injury that results from blunt force trauma to the head and cause injury to neurons. There are an estimated 1.6-3.8 million sports-related concussions and traumatic brain injuries a year in the United States. Currently, there is a lack of gold standard in the management and treatment of concussion symptoms. Most practices call for rest until symptoms subside, followed by a return to play protocol. Physical activity has been linked to increased brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which can increase neuron repair. Along with this, other symptoms of …
Developing The Label Avoidance Measure Of Stigma: A Preliminary Psychometric Review, Julia J. Cameron
Developing The Label Avoidance Measure Of Stigma: A Preliminary Psychometric Review, Julia J. Cameron
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Stigma acts as a barrier to receiving treatment for mental health concerns. Label avoidance, one of several different aspects that compose the overarching concept of stigma, captures the stigma involved when individuals avoid social institutions that might confer a psychiatric diagnostic label and would mark them as an individual with a mental health problem. Label avoidance has been described as a key stigma construct in the literature but has been sparsely studied. Answering a call in the field for new, psychometrically sound stigma measures, we created a new measure of label avoidance and acquired initial validity and reliability evidence supporting …
Social Influences And Social Desirability On Recollections Of Childhood Bullying, Jaynee L. Bohart
Social Influences And Social Desirability On Recollections Of Childhood Bullying, Jaynee L. Bohart
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Parents and peers play important roles in shaping attitudes toward a variety of matters during adolescence. However, little research has investigated parental and peer influence on developing attitudes toward bullying. To address this gap in literature, the current study recruited college students from a mid-sized public university in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States to complete a survey about their past bullying attitudes and perceptions of their parents’ and peers’ influence on their attitudes. Resulted indicated that while participants reported both their parents and peers as influential on their past attitudes, they perceived their parents as more influential …
Classroom Language Socialization: Language Acquisition, Educator Beliefs, And Intercultural Communicative Competence, Rebekah M. Skoog
Classroom Language Socialization: Language Acquisition, Educator Beliefs, And Intercultural Communicative Competence, Rebekah M. Skoog
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Classroom Language Socialization:
Language acquisition, educator beliefs and intercultural communicative competence
Language and culture are intricately intertwined. In the past, language structure was thought to be the “purist” form of culture, but then the work of Dell Hymes (1972) on communicative competence and the relationship between language and culture brought a shift to the way language systems were understood. Rather than being studied separately from their communicative act, Hymes argued for the need to understand language through context. With the help of Canale and Swain (1980) these ideas about language brought a shift in educational literature and consequently the design …
Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr
Appealing Unpeeled: The Layers Of Meaning Of Lemons As Portrayed In Dutch Golden Age Paintings, Amanda M. Barr
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
According to one study, lemons are depicted in fifty-one percent of a sampling of Netherlandish paintings between 1500 and 1650, a time known as the Dutch Golden Age, as opposed to sixteen percent of Italian works made during the same period. Horticulturally, citrus plants flourish much easier in the warm Mediterranean climate, requiring special orangery hothouses to survive the cold Netherlandish winter, leading to the question as to why lemons were such a popular subject matter for Dutch painters. I have used a multivalent historical, socio-cultural, economic, and literary approach to attempt an interpretation of the lemon as object, subject, …
