A Methodological Proposal For Textbook Analysis, Marilena Bittar
A Methodological Proposal For Textbook Analysis, Marilena Bittar
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Research on textbooks has been carried out in different countries and with different purposes, including a set of studies that seek to know what those books convey in their texts. This type of investigation gives a view of the textbook as something that gives materiality to the proposed curriculum as a way to approach the knowledge taught and/or to identify elements that contribute to understanding reasons for some learning difficulties and persistent errors. Since the early 2000s, I have guided research studies that seeks to understand what kind of mathematics is proposed in textbooks intended for Brazilian basic education and …

Student-Athlete Well-Being at the University of Montana
Psychology
At the University of Montana, there are very few resources and outlets for student-athletes to talk about the challenges that come with high-pressure situations in competition and during everyday life. There is also a large stigma in athletics about addressing the many issues and struggles that student-athletes face. My goal is to give the athletic program at the University of Montana a different perspective on the student-athlete lifestyle. This research project will focus on creating a social media profile and website for student-athletes at the University of Montana concentrating resources to support …

Reading As Bearing Witness: Incorporating The Voices Of Incarcerated Youth In Honors Education, Amelia Hawes, Jorgia Hawthorne
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Honors faculty often engage students in service-learning and community-engaged courses to help them learn curricular concepts, develop skills in responsible citizenship, and positively impact their community. In fall 2020 and spring 2021, the Davidson Honors College worked with the Free Verse Writing Project, a nonprofit organization serving incarcerated youth, with the primary goal of bringing the writing and voices of young, incarcerated authors into the college classroom to give their stories a wider audience. Our presentation will explore a case study of this successful partnership and its ongoing development, with a particular focus on our perspective as honors students. We …
Cell Phone Usage In Secondary Schools: A Pervasive Post-Pandemic Problem, Donna Arganbright
Cell Phone Usage In Secondary Schools: A Pervasive Post-Pandemic Problem, Donna Arganbright
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Within schools across the country, cell phone usage has been and continues to be a pervasive problem. While this issue has been noted as far back as the advent of cell phones, there seems as of late to be a troubling trend of excessive cell phone usage within class. Since the Covid-19 pandemic relegated students to learning digitally within their homes, students returning to physical classrooms are struggling with re-learning what it looks like to be a member of a functioning learning environment. The issue most glaringly represented and difficult to address is phone usage within the classroom. Time spent …

Spotify: A Strategic Analysis Of Its Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, And Threats, Kian Dei Bertin
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Spotify is an online streaming platform that allows consumers to listen to music and podcasts for free with advertising or paying a monthly subscription for ad-free access. Since its founding in 2006, it exploded into the music scene, taking hold of a significant portion of market share in the media and entertainment industry. As always in the business world, however, there is room for growth. The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate how Spotify is performing as a company, both internally and compared to its competitors. After exploring Spotify’s business practices and the state of its industry through business …

Under The Skin: Queer Trauma And The Medical Sphere, Gabriella Graceffo
Under The Skin: Queer Trauma And The Medical Sphere, Gabriella Graceffo
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
For my third major artistic project focusing on abandoned human structures, Under the Skin is an interdisciplinary exploration of loss and trauma through silver gelatin photographs and a collection of original poems. I combine images of the decommissioned Air Force hospital in St. Marie, MT and free verse poems to explore how personal, intergenerational trauma lives within my queer body, and how my body is wrapped up in the medical sphere. This creative thesis compels the audience to consider the experiences we carry with us and how these ruptures and traumas can manifest in the body, particularly the queer body, …
Witch Pamphlets, Tsea M. Francisconi
Witch Pamphlets, Tsea M. Francisconi
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
The witch hysteria that overtook Christian Europe during the Early Modern era inspired a mass paranoia over the conspiratorial belief that the Abrahamic religion’s personification of the world’s evils was attempting to rise up and harm Christian communities during this time period. It was believed that in order to achieve this goal the Christian version of the Devil had been recruiting humans within Christian communities and turning these chosen humans into witches in order to spread their destruction, murder, and terror amongst their own neighbors and families. Over the course of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England, the …

Review of A Symphony of Possibilities: A Handbook for Arts Integration in Secondary English Language Arts edited by Katherine J. Macro & Michelle Zoss. The collection offers a rich resource for ELA classrooms.
