Metlakatla Indian Community V. Dunleavy, Elizabeth L. Orvis May 2023

Metlakatla Indian Community V. Dunleavy, Elizabeth L. Orvis

Public Land & Resources Law Review

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed the District Court of Alaska’s judgment that dismissed the Metlakatla Indian Community’s suit against Alaska’s limited entry program. On appeal, the Ninth Circuit addressed whether and to what extent the 1891 Act preserved an implied off-reservation fishing right for members of the Metlakatla Indian Community. The Ninth Circuit ruled in favor of the Metlakatla Indian Community but remanded to the district court to determine the boundaries of the traditional off-reservation fishing grounds. Motions for rehearing and rehearing en banc were denied.

Environmental Education In Informal Learning Spaces: Integration, Design, And Access, Maya S. Gutierrez May 2023

Environmental Education In Informal Learning Spaces: Integration, Design, And Access, Maya S. Gutierrez

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

In this portfolio, I will focus on using learning spaces to facilitate environmental education and promote environmental literacy. I will discuss the incorporation of the framework of environmental education into an experiential and informal learning environment; the creation of a curriculum that fuses formal and informal learning, providing upper elementary students opportunities to participate in hands-on experiential learning opportunities of environmental education; and the direct and indirect benefits nature-based experiences can provide when implemented into a therapeutic group home. Embedded throughout is an environmental education framework that has been adapted for the diverse setting and requirements of the respective organization …

Overlap Of Cognates In The Bilingual Mental Lexicon: A Cognate Continuum Model, Ashlynn Everett, Juhi Singh, Mila Tasseva-Kurkchieva Apr 2023

Overlap Of Cognates In The Bilingual Mental Lexicon: A Cognate Continuum Model, Ashlynn Everett, Juhi Singh, Mila Tasseva-Kurkchieva

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Purpose: Cognates (i.e., words that share meanings and pronunciations in more than one language) are uniquely suited to provide insight into the bilingual mental lexicon due to their overlapping nature. Previous researchers have used a cognate/non-cognate distinction (Dijkstra & Van Heuven, 2002) or measurements of orthographic changes in words (Peeters et. al, 2013) to evaluate this overlap. By comparison, this study aimed to examine how phonological and syntactic differences between cognates impact language processing in bilinguals.

Methods: Researchers categorized cognates by level of phonological overlap as identified by listeners’ ratings of similarity. These categories were described as 1) true cognates …

Women Of Missoula: Menstruation And Refugees, Bella Spencer, Samantha Boutte, Emmily Valencia, Brooklyn Grubbs, Holly Sudol

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Abstract

Stigmatization, lack of accessible menstrual products, and an overall misconstrued sense of menstruation impact menstruators at a disproportionate rate. When diving into the literature, we found that refugee women not only faced stigmas and a lack of access to menstrual products and education, but also ran into cultural barriers and differing attitudes on menstruation. To address this issue, we formulated the idea of a menstrual drive. Instead of focusing on refugee menstruators as a whole, our focus will be the refugee population in Missoula, MT. We recognize that the stigmatization of menstruation is an ongoing global issue that affects …

Putting Math In Its Place A Review Of Cathy O’Neil’S Weapons Of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality And Threatens Democracy, Nathalie Sinclair Apr 2023

Putting Math In Its Place A Review Of Cathy O’Neil’S Weapons Of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality And Threatens Democracy, Nathalie Sinclair

The Mathematics Enthusiast

With its bright yellow cover and its ominous title, this book attracts attention. The subtitle, “How big data increases inequality and threatens democracy” signals very strongly that the “math” in question in the title is primarily that which relates to the statistical and computational means of collecting, analysing and using data. For some readers, the title might be surprising, because it challenges the typical understanding of mathematics as an objective and value-neutral discipline. Worse, it claims that mathematics is significantly involved in creating inequality and compromising democracy. If it is true, then the answer to the perennial student question, “when …

Overcoming Misconceptions About Probability A Review Of David J. Hand’S The Improbability Principle, Keith Gallagher Apr 2023

Overcoming Misconceptions About Probability A Review Of David J. Hand’S The Improbability Principle, Keith Gallagher

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Have you ever struck up a conversation with a stranger in a coffee shop and been surprised to learn that you were born in the same week, but in different years? Or maybe you have that one annoying friend who always seems to win raffles and lotteries even though you never win anything, and you just can’t figure out how they always get so lucky? Or perhaps, just for fun, you visited a psychic one day, and you were shocked by how much they were able to tell you about yourself. In The Improbability Principle, David J. Hand explains …

(Re)Humanizing Mathematics With Story A Review Of Keith Devlin’S Finding Fibonacci: The Quest To Rediscover The Forgotten Mathematical Genius Who Changed The World, Cynthia Nicol Apr 2023

(Re)Humanizing Mathematics With Story A Review Of Keith Devlin’S Finding Fibonacci: The Quest To Rediscover The Forgotten Mathematical Genius Who Changed The World, Cynthia Nicol

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Indigenous scholar Richard van Camp of the Dogrib Nation shares how “a great story reminds us of what it means to be human” (van Camp in Galloway, 2020). Keith Devlin’s book, Finding Fibonacci: The Quest to Rediscover the Forgotten Mathematical Genius Who Changed the World, does just that – reminding us what it means to be human, but in this case through mathematics. In Finding Fibonacci, Devlin shares his story and journey to learn more about mathematician Leonardo Pisano (Fibonacci) and Leonardo’s manuscript Liber Abbaci (Book of Calculation), one of the first manuscripts written on practical arithmetic in …

Arithmetic: Craft Or Art? A Recursive (Re)View Of Paul Lockhart’S A Mathematician’S Lament And Arithmetic, Jennifer S. Thom Apr 2023

Arithmetic: Craft Or Art? A Recursive (Re)View Of Paul Lockhart’S A Mathematician’S Lament And Arithmetic, Jennifer S. Thom

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Paul Lockhart is a former computer programmer, elementary teacher, research mathematician, university professor, and somewhat more recently a K-12 mathematics teacher and author. Lockhart’s first written composition appeared two decades ago in 2002. All of 25 pages, his essay A Mathematician's Lament began like this:

A musician wakes from a terrible nightmare. In this dream he finds himself in a society where music education has been made mandatory ... Educators, school systems, and the state are put in charge of this vital project. Studies are commissioned, committees are formed, and decisions are made—all without the advice or participation of a …

Things Behind Bayes’ Theorem A Review Of Sharon Bertsch Mcgrayne’S The Theory That Would Not Die: How Bayes' Theorem Allowed To Decipher The Enigma Code, To Pursue The Russian Submarines And To Emerge Triumphant From Two Centuries Of Controversy From A Statistics Education Perspective, Ernesto Sanchez, Nathalia Morgado, Eleazar Silvestre Apr 2023

Things Behind Bayes’ Theorem A Review Of Sharon Bertsch Mcgrayne’S The Theory That Would Not Die: How Bayes' Theorem Allowed To Decipher The Enigma Code, To Pursue The Russian Submarines And To Emerge Triumphant From Two Centuries Of Controversy From A Statistics Education Perspective, Ernesto Sanchez, Nathalia Morgado, Eleazar Silvestre

The Mathematics Enthusiast

A feeling emerges from reading McGrayne’s book expressed as a paraphrase of a verse from Hamlet: There are more things behind Bayes’ theorem, Horatio, than dreamt of in your philosophy. The book tells a story of the birth and survival of an idea around which social enterprises, personal odysseys, and human passions are masterfully woven by the author. The book has 17 chapters distributed in five parts and two annexes. These parts reveal a narrative structure worthy of Propp: The hero of the story (Bayes’ theorem) is born and raised normally but rejected later. It is forced to act …
