Incorporating Instructional Ai Tools In The Classroom – Student Experiences And Perspectives, Da'myah Lanea Buckner Mar 2026

Incorporating Instructional Ai Tools In The Classroom – Student Experiences And Perspectives, Da'myah Lanea Buckner

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

As AI technologies have rapidly emerged over the past few years, conversations about their implementation in education have been at the forefront; given this, it’s important to consider student experience. The goal of this study was to elicit perspectives of students in relation to their experience with an AI-powered instructional tool called Packback, which was used for online class discussions. Through various features, Packback provides users with real-time AI-generated feedback on their work. The participants in this study were graduate level SLP students who at the end of the semester were able to share their thoughts about the tool through …

Integrating Hippotherapy Into Interprofessional Stroke Rehabilitation For Aphasia: A Feasibility Pilot Study, Bethany H. Wenger, Catherine Off, Julia E. Mazzarella, Laurie Slovarp, Leah J. Meloy Mar 2026

Integrating Hippotherapy Into Interprofessional Stroke Rehabilitation For Aphasia: A Feasibility Pilot Study, Bethany H. Wenger, Catherine Off, Julia E. Mazzarella, Laurie Slovarp, Leah J. Meloy

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Stroke is a leading cause of global disability, with approximately 94 million people living with the effects of stroke worldwide, impacting over 2.5 million individuals annually (Feigin et al., 2025). Stroke-related motor and communication deficits often co-occur, increasing challenges for recovery and increasing social isolation, depression, and dependency (Mitchell et al., 2021). Hippotherapy, the therapeutic use of equine movement, has emerged as a novel treatment approach for neurorehabilitation; however, its integration within interprofessional stroke rehabilitation targeting motor and communication impairments is limited (Koca, 2016; Viruega et al., 2022). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, fidelity, and …

Using Community Based Participatory Research And Ripple Effects Mapping To Demonstrate Multi-Level Community Impact Of A Tribal Public Health Intervention, Eve Christensen, Samantha Morigeau, Chelsea Kleinmeyer, Ali Manuel, Taylor Stewart Mar 2026

Using Community Based Participatory Research And Ripple Effects Mapping To Demonstrate Multi-Level Community Impact Of A Tribal Public Health Intervention, Eve Christensen, Samantha Morigeau, Chelsea Kleinmeyer, Ali Manuel, Taylor Stewart

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Introduction. Evaluating the impacts and outcomes of interventions is a priority in the field of public health. However, participatory evaluation approaches, especially those able to demonstrate impacts of community-based interventions (which are often complex and intended to address multiple social ecological levels of change), are scarce. Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) is a novel participatory qualitative evaluation method that can be used for this purpose. This presentation describes the application of REM to evaluate impacts of a fall prevention intervention within the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) Health Department. Methods. This evaluation took place within an ongoing community-based participatory research …

Lovecraftian Hybrids And Transgender Embodiment, Mari K. Newman Mar 2026

Lovecraftian Hybrids And Transgender Embodiment, Mari K. Newman

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

While much of Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s oeuvre has been analyzed by queer theorists for homosexual metaphors within Lovecraft’s monsters, less argued is the subject of his hybrids mirroring transgender embodiment. I posit the rise of transgender identities in the Western mainstream and access to breakthrough gender-affirming care in the United States during Lovecraft’s life lend to a reading of his hybrids as embodying gender queerness. The proposed research is a literature review which draws upon interdisciplinary texts ranging from scholars in the social sciences—such as sociology and anthropology—to the hard sciences such as ecology and health sciences.

In this paper, …

From Classroom To Real Life: Chinese Esl Learners And Sex-Related Taboo Language, Yusi Chen, Gage Weston Mar 2026

From Classroom To Real Life: Chinese Esl Learners And Sex-Related Taboo Language, Yusi Chen, Gage Weston

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Sex-related taboo language (SRTL) is common in everyday English but often absent from English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction due to teacher discomfort, limited training, and perceived inappropriateness (Gale & Fernández, 2016). However, SRTL is important for expressing emotion, building social relationships, and negotiating interpersonal boundaries (Jay, 2009). Without instruction, learners may misinterpret these expressions, causing embarrassment, social challenges, or increased vulnerability in contexts involving consent, discrimination, or safety (Dewaele, 2004). Understanding when and how to use such language is essential but under-addressed in ESL curricula (Kremin, 2017). Limited prior exposure to sex-related language among Chinese ESL learners (Shi …

There Is No Intonation Rule For Yes-No Questions In Blackfoot, Chance Lockwood Mar 2026

There Is No Intonation Rule For Yes-No Questions In Blackfoot, Chance Lockwood

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Cross-linguistically, the intonation of questions differs from the intonation of their declarative counterparts. For example, the intonation of an English question is normally raised at the end of the sentence, while the intonation of a statement is not. Also, in some languages the range of pitch is greater in questions than in statements. However, to my knowledge there are no intonation studies on Blackfoot that focus on questions, only on other elements of intonation, such as pitch movement, stress predictability, and rhythm. Using Praat, a program designed for acoustic speech analysis, I examined the intonation patterns of 19 statement-question pairs …

Adoption Under Constraint: Testing Rodger’S Diffusion Of Innovation Model In Rural Appalachia, Stewart Rebecca Williams Mar 2026

Adoption Under Constraint: Testing Rodger’S Diffusion Of Innovation Model In Rural Appalachia, Stewart Rebecca Williams

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Rogers Diffusion of Innovation Model is one of the most used frameworks for research in evolutionary archaeology. It assesses how populations adopt innovations and how innovations spread between groups. The model emphasizes social and community communication networks as well as adoption phases that include testing and potentially adapting an innovation to better fit a population's needs.

However, I believe that this model assumes a level of personal and community agency and access that is simply not present in many populations in our post-industrial, globalized world. I use rural Appalachia as a case study for constrained or limited agency due to …

Advisors Are Ambassadors, Catherine Thogersen Mar 2026

Advisors Are Ambassadors, Catherine Thogersen

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Advisors are Ambassadors

We can improve UM’s graduation rates by increasing our students’ levels of hope. (Snyder et al, 1999) found a significant positive correlation between student Hope Scale scores and graduation rates. In this study, about 56% of students with high hope graduated on time, compared to only about 40% of those with low hope (Snyder et al, 1999, p. 824). They further found that through consistent interaction with others, hope could be either increased or decreased. Snyder’s (2002) Hope Theory attributes hope to a combination of agency- a person’s willpower and confidence in their ability to accomplish …

Montana Residents’ Attitudes Towards Tourism – 2025, Carter Bermingham, Megan Schultz, Jayce Beck

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Montana residents maintain a broadly positive outlook on tourism, with 66% agreeing that tourism's benefits outweigh its drawbacks and 72% recognizing the economic value of state-supported tourism promotion. However, resident sentiment remains nuanced: 45% report concerns about overcrowding, and fewer than half (36%) believe increased tourism would improve their personal quality of life — a trend consistent across four consecutive years.

Regional divides are pronounced. Communities near high-visitation destinations such as Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park express greater skepticism toward tourism growth, while lower-visitation regions, including Central Montana, Southeast Montana, and Missouri River Country, hold more favorable views …
