A Methodological Proposal For Textbook Analysis, Marilena Bittar
A Methodological Proposal For Textbook Analysis, Marilena Bittar
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Research on textbooks has been carried out in different countries and with different purposes, including a set of studies that seek to know what those books convey in their texts. This type of investigation gives a view of the textbook as something that gives materiality to the proposed curriculum as a way to approach the knowledge taught and/or to identify elements that contribute to understanding reasons for some learning difficulties and persistent errors. Since the early 2000s, I have guided research studies that seeks to understand what kind of mathematics is proposed in textbooks intended for Brazilian basic education and …

Spaces, Movements And Topological Notions, What Do The Babies' Cartographies Show?, Jenny Patricia Acevedo-Rincón, Gabriela Guarneri De Campos Tebet
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In the first months of life, babies develop visual perception. The notions of space evolve in the everyday of experiences, the recognition of the self through your body, and relationships with others. The topological notions developed by babies correspond to closeness, proximity, continuity and separation. As babies grow, their skills are developed both in the projective space and in the geometric space. These even influence the baby's development in an integral way. This article intends to present results of the topological notions of closure, proximity separation and projections in the baby’s space. This qualitative research is developed under a descriptive …

The Anthropological Theory Of The Didactic In Brazilian Researches, Sueli Dos Prazeres Santos, Luiz Marcio Santos Farias
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In the present article, we undertook a systematic study of bibliographic review based on the discussions, in the academic scope, about the contribution of the Anthropological Theory of Didactic – ATD (Chevallard, 1992) linked to Mathematics teaching and learning processes. The purpose was to investigate the current appropriation of ATD in Stricto sensu researches in Brazil. It is worth mentioning that the present study refers to a part of a PhD thesis. Thus, we aim to present an overview of thesis and dissertations answering the following question: "What are the main programs, institutions and researchers in Brazil that have been …
An Exploration In Museum Diversity And Inclusivity, Jaimie L. Davis
An Exploration In Museum Diversity And Inclusivity, Jaimie L. Davis
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Establishing equity in museum staffing will widen the range of potential visitors. By contrasting the way museums were in the past with the present, this exploration will outline diversity and inclusivity issues in the museum world. I will take the information I have gained from lectures and my own research and present an argument for museum inclusivity and diversity. Encouraging the general public and internal museum workers to consider diversity and inclusivity in museum studies is conducive to the overall success of the institution. In this independent study, I will explore diversity and inclusivity in the museum world. I will …

In the United States and Canada, Native women, girls, and two-spirit people are stolen and killed at a disproportionate rate. Despite their pleas for justice, non-indigenous media are reluctant to give Indigenous voices a platform to incite change. Critically, the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) is not endemic to North America, but permeates through aboriginal life on every continent as a tool of settler colonialism. Existing literature on the topic ofMMIWG2S has traced the roots of the crisis to settler colonialism and to non-Indigenous popular culture, but there is a gap in knowledge …

Determining an Alternative Skeletal Feature to be Utilized in Strontium Isotope Analysis When Teeth are Unavailable
Abstract
Strontium is an alkaline earth metal that enters the human body via the consumption of food and water. A minimal level of these molecules integrate into human bone, replacing calcium. The level found in skeletal material directly correlates to the level of strontium found in the fauna and soil of the region an individual resides.
Due to this correlation, strontium isotopes are currently being used in forensic cases to …

“Identifying Skeletal Trauma Markers Associated With Intimate Partner Violence”, Haley K. Omeasoo
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is an issue that has been around for a very long time and needs to be put in the spotlight. When doing this study, we can keep in mind these different fracture types and how they may show up on an individual who was in an IPV situation. Also, since almost all of the samples presented in this study fall under the manner of death, “homicides,” and more specifically, under the category “beaten by an assailant,” we can treat these cases as such, in regards to being possible IPV situations. However, I have to mention that …
Dams, Displaced Tribes, Salvage Archaeology, And Cultural Resource Management In The Missouri River Basin In North And South Dakota., Farryl Elisa Hunt
Dams, Displaced Tribes, Salvage Archaeology, And Cultural Resource Management In The Missouri River Basin In North And South Dakota., Farryl Elisa Hunt
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
The large mainstem dams constructed along the Missouri River from 1946 to 1966 caused the traumatic displacement of prominent Native populations in North and South Dakota. The lack of regard for human remains and sacred artifacts flooded during this time is an appalling episode in American history. Perceived failures with salvage archaeology methods to recover artifacts and data threatened by the construction of dams motivated Cultural Resource Management practices in the United States. Laws such as the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979, and the Native …
Sex Determination Of Ritual Violence Victims At Paquimé In Chihuahua, Mexico, Lacy Hazelwood
Sex Determination Of Ritual Violence Victims At Paquimé In Chihuahua, Mexico, Lacy Hazelwood
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
At the prehistoric site of Paquimé in northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, violence has been linked to the development and maintenance of ritual and social inequality through human sacrifice and performance violence. Across pre-colonial Mexico, human sacrifice coincided with the end or beginning of new seasons, maintenance of hierarchical structures, and offerings to the gods of rain, fertility, and agriculture. Research indicates that preferences for certain demographic variables such as age and sex may have played a significant role in the recruitment of sacrificial victims, and that these were often matched with the deities to whom they were offered. To aid in …

The Forgotten Epidemic: Identification Of Mtbc In The Neolithic Trypillia Of Verteba Cave, Ukraine, Tre Blohm
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Microorganisms have plagued humankind for millennia and frequently participate in an evolutionary arms race against their hosts. Diseases from various microorganisms have crippled entire countries or led to massive population declines in recent history. However, much is unknown about epidemiology in ancient times. My project will be the first comprehensive paleoepidemiological approach to understand disease across populations in Europe during the Neolithic era (7000-1700BC). The Neolithic was one of the most profound transformations in human history, both culturally and biologically. Massive migrations, formations of the earliest settlements in Europe, and introduction of agriculture and pastoralism led to new environments for …
Health, Land, And Heritage: Understanding Montana Suicide Through Culture, Emory C. Padgett
Health, Land, And Heritage: Understanding Montana Suicide Through Culture, Emory C. Padgett
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
From Norman Maclean’s A River Runs Through It (1976) to the popular series Yellowstone, stories loom large in Montana, and their use goes beyond entertainment. Stories about the state are informative in understanding Montana culture and heritage because the myths, perspectives, and truths revealed through literature, art, and television are closely intertwined with the memories and values of its people; in an ongoing feedback, stories simultaneously originate in lived experience and actively shape experiences. Grounded in this cultural significance, I use media as an ethnographic lens through which to study social change in rural Montana, which has faced economic …
