Assessing Simulation Ecosystem Processes For Climate Variability Research At Glacier National Park, Joseph D. White, Steven W. Running, Peter Edmond Thornton, Robert E. Keane, Kevin C. Ryan, Daniel B. Fagre, Carl H. Key

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Glacier National Park served as a test site for ecosystem analyses that involved a suite of integrated models embedded within a geographic information system. The goal of the exercise was to provide managers with maps that could illustrate probable shifts in vegetation, net primary production (NPP), and hydrologic responses associated with two selected climatic scenarios. The climatic scenarios were (a) a recent 12-yr record of weather data, and (b) a reconstituted set that sequentially introduced in repeated 3-yr intervals wetter–cooler, drier–warmer, and typical conditions. To extrapolate the implications of changes in ecosystem processes and resulting growth and distribution of vegetation …

The Proportion Of Snail Kites Attempting To Breed And The Number Of Breeding Attempts Per Year In Florida, Robert E. Bennetts, Katie Golden, Victoria J. Dreitz, Wiley M. Kitchens

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

During the breeding season of 1995 we monitored the proportion of adult and subadult Snail Kites (Rostrhamus sociabilis) attempting to breed and the number of breeding attempts using radio telemetry. Our sample consisted of 23 adults (14 females, 9 males) and 9 subadults for which we had data over the entire breeding season. All adults attempted to breed at least once with an observed average of 1.4 (± 0.6 SD) breeding attempts per individual. In contrast, only 3 (33%) of the subadults attempted to breed. Of the adults, 15 (65%) made one breeding attempt, 7 (30%) made two …

Insect Herbivory Above- And Belowground: Individual And Joint Effects On Plant Fitness, John L. Maron Jun 1998

Insect Herbivory Above- And Belowground: Individual And Joint Effects On Plant Fitness, John L. Maron

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding of the selective effects of insect herbivory on plants comes primarily from studies of herbivory aboveground. The impact of belowground herbivory, either in isolation or in concert with herbivory aboveground, on plant fitness is only beginning to be understood.

I reduced the densities of root-boring ghost moth (Hepialus californicus) larvae and/or flower- and seed-feeding insects of bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), a woody shrub, and followed fecundity and survival of plants for three years. In year one, suppression of aboveground herbivores increased mean seed output by 31%, but suppression of belowground herbivores had no significant effect …

Final Report: Chamberlain Creek Elk Studies, 1977-1983 And 1993-1996, Milo G. Burcham

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

This is a report about elk in managed forest environments. In a sense, this project began in 1971 when the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) joined the Montana Cooperative Elk-Logging Study (MCELS). The MCELS was initiated in 1970 by formal agreement between the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station and Region One of the U.S. Forest Service, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and The University of Montana School of Forestry (Lyon 1971). BN Timberlands (now Plum Creek Timber Company) participated informally after 1974. The MCELS arose in response to the controversy over clear-cut logging, with an overall …
