Src homology 3 (SH3) domains bind peptides to mediate protein–protein interactions that assemble and regulate dynamic biological processes. We surveyed the repertoire of SH3 binding specificity using peptide phage display in a metazoan, the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, and discovered that it structurally mirrors that of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We then mapped the worm SH3 interactome using stringent yeast two-hybrid and compared it with the equivalent map for yeast. We found that the wormSH3 interactome resembles the analogous yeast network because it is significantly enriched for proteins with roles in endocytosis. Nevertheless, orthologous SH3 domain mediated interactions are highly …

We assessed the effects of low dose methamphetamine treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats by employing MRI, immunohistology, and neurological functional tests. Young male Wistar rats were subjected to TBI using the controlled cortical impact model. The treated rats (n = 10) received an intravenous (iv) bolus dose of 0.42 mg/kg of methamphetamine at eight hours after the TBI followed by continuous iv infusion for 24 hrs. The control rats (n = 10) received the same volume of saline using the same protocol. MRI scans, including T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), were performed one day …

John Evelyn was appointed as a founding member of the Royal Society in 1662, and in this capacity he published Sylva, or a Discourse of Forest-Trees, and the Propagation of Timber (1664). Evelyn's Sylva foreshadows the development of a conservationist ethic in the management of forests and wildlands throughout the English-speaking world. In this treatise, Evelyn advocates the replanting of woodlands that had been devastated during the English Civil War as a means of restoring the nation's defenses, particularly its navy and merchant marine. The book describes the various kinds of trees, their cultivation, and the best use for each …

The non-uniformity of the distribution of biodiversity makes allocation of the limited resources available for conservation of biodiversity a difficult task. Approaches such as biodiversity hotspot identification, endemic bird areas, crisis ecoregions, global 200 ecoregions, and the Last of the Wild are used by scientists and international conservation agencies to prioritize conservation efforts. As part of the biodiverse Eastern Himalayan region, Bhutan has been identified as a conservation priority area by all these different approaches, yet data validating these assessments are limited. To examine whether Bhutan is a biodiversity hot spot for a key taxonomic group, we conducted camera trapping …

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is being rapidly adopted as a tool to detect rare animals. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) using probe-based chemistries may represent a particularly powerful tool because of the method's sensitivity, specificity, and potential to quantify target DNA. However, there has been little work understanding the performance of these assays in the presence of closely related, sympatric taxa. If related species cause any cross-amplification or interference, false positives and negatives may be generated. These errors can be disastrous if false positives lead to overestimate the abundance of an endangered species or if false negatives prevent detection of an invasive species. …

Native Ecosystems Council V. Tidwell, Josh Nichols
Native Ecosystems Council V. Tidwell, Josh Nichols
Public Land & Resources Law Review
The United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that the U.S. Forest Service‟s proxy-on-proxy approach, when considering livestock grazing levels in Southwest Montana‟s Antelope Basin/Elk Lake Project in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, did not comply with the National Forest Management Act. The court determined that the Forest Service failed to take a requisite “hard look” at environmental impacts, such as the impacts on sage grouse populations and the maintenance of diverse habitats for native wildlife, when it approved grazing allotment updates.

Public Land & Resources Law Review
Conventional alfalfa farmers brought suit seeking an injunction against the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service‟s deregulation of a genetically engineered alfalfa strain resistant to the herbicide Roundup. Monsanto Co., owner of the Roundup Ready Alfalfa, appealed the District Court‟s injunction barring the deregulation and planting of the alfalfa to the United States Supreme Court, which reversed the permanent injunction. The Court reasoned that the injunction was premature, overly broad, and did not consider alternatives to the blanket ban on planting of the crop. The Court emphasized that the injunctive standard for National Environmental Protection Act claims is no lower …

Public Land & Resources Law Review
Two environmental advocacy groups challenged the decision of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to grant operational management of the National Bison Range in western Montana to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation. The District Court for the District of Columbia held the Service‘s decision to classify the management agreement as a categorical exclusion to environmental review violated the National Environmental Policy Act. The Court held the management agreement be set aside, effectively returning control of the National Bison Range to FWS.

National Parks & Conservation Association V. Bureau Of Land Management, John Wright
Public Land & Resources Law Review
Landowners and conservation group brought suit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over a proposed public-private land swap adjacent to Joshua Tree National Park to allow a private company to build and operate a landfill. The Ninth Circuit held that: (1) the BLM must evaluate the land‘s probable use in its highest and best use analysis to ensure fair compensation to the public; (2) the BLM failed to consider alternatives in specific detail to meet the public‘s need for long-term landfill demand; and (3) the BLM‘s environmental impact statement was deficient regarding the potential for eutrophication altering the desert …

Genome rearrangements are associated with eukaryotic evolutionary processes ranging from tumorigenesis to speciation. Rearrangements are especially common following interspecific hybridization, and some of these could be expected to have strong selective value. To test this expectation we created de novo interspecific yeast hybrids between two diverged but largely syntenic Saccharomyces species, S. cerevisiae and S. uvarum, then experimentally evolved them under continuous ammonium limitation. We discovered that a characteristic interspecific genome rearrangement arose multiple times in independently evolved populations. We uncovered nine different breakpoints, all occurring in a narrow similar to 1-kb region of chromosome 14, and all producing an …

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) provides state-based data on health and risk behaviors among adults. Several supplemental outdoor recreation related questions were included in the 2011 questionnaire to assist with the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan process and are analyzed in this report.
