Suitable Days For Plant Growth Disappear Under Projected Climate Change: Potential Human And Biotic Vulnerability, Camilo Mora, Iain R. Caldwell, Jamie M. Caldwell, Micah R. Fisher, Brandon M. Genco, Steven W. Running

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Ongoing climate change can alter conditions for plant growth, in turn affecting ecological and social systems. While there have been considerable advances in understanding the physical aspects of climate change, comprehensive analyses integrating climate, biological, and social sciences are less common. Here we use climate projections under alternative mitigation scenarios to show how changes in environmental variables that limit plant growth could impact ecosystems and people. We show that although the global mean number of days above freezing will increase by up to 7% by 2100 under “business as usual” (representative concentration pathway [RCP] 8.5), suitable growing days will actually …

What Can Education Learn From Real-World Communication Of Risk And Uncertainty?, David Spiegelhalter, Jenny Gage Jun 2015

What Can Education Learn From Real-World Communication Of Risk And Uncertainty?, David Spiegelhalter, Jenny Gage

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Probability is a difficult topic to teach, not least because it is rather unclear what it actually means. Modern risk communication has tackled general public incomprehension of probability statements by using the metaphor of ‘expected frequencies’ – for example, “of 100 people like you, we would expect 10 to have a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years.” We show how these ideas can be taken into the classroom as the basis for teaching probability, using frequency tree diagrams as the fundamental representation. Empirical frequency trees can be used to summarise a series of classroom experiments, and then …

Risk—A Fundamental Condition Of Doing Mathematics, Wolff-Michael Roth, Jean-François Maheux Jun 2015

Risk—A Fundamental Condition Of Doing Mathematics, Wolff-Michael Roth, Jean-François Maheux

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The theme of this special issue is risk. But risk is not a common topic of investigation in mathematics education, lest it be an occasional interest in “at risk” students, generally defined as those who likely will fail at school. In this study, we are not interested in this rather limited use of the risk concept. Instead, we show that risk not only is a condition of human life generally, but also a necessity for teaching and learning mathematics. To show this, we develop the concept of risk with materials from a second-grade mathematics unit on geometry. Implications are drawn …

Students’ Language Repertoires For Prediction, David Wagner, Joseph Dicks, Paula Kristmanson Jun 2015

Students’ Language Repertoires For Prediction, David Wagner, Joseph Dicks, Paula Kristmanson

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Communication about prediction is complex in a number of ways. First, language is by nature recursive — language is an indicator of meaning as well as a force that shapes meaning. Second, the same language used to communicate prediction in uncertain environments is used for other purposes. In this article, we describe how the recursive nature of language impacted the choices we made in a cross-sectional longitudinal study aimed at gaining insight into children’s language repertoires relating to conjecture. We then explore some Grade 6 students’ communication about prediction to develop insight into their meaning and meaning-making with prediction language. …

In the New Zealand school statistics curriculum, year 12 students (aged 16-17) are required to solve problems that involve interpreting risk and relative risk within a range of meaningful contexts. In a small exploratory study we investigate the risk conceptions of four year 13 students who performed at the excellence level in their year 12 externally-assessed examination on this topic. Through questionnaires and interviews we investigate the ways in which these students perceive and express risks associated with a variety of everyday activities and also how they compare the risks of several adverse outcomes. We also explore the strategies they …

Adults’ Perceptions Of Risk In The Big Data Era, Theodosia Prodromou Jun 2015

Adults’ Perceptions Of Risk In The Big Data Era, Theodosia Prodromou

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present digital era has seen rapid growth in the availability of big data; we were curious about whether such availability of data changes perceptions and assessments of risk. In this paper, we investigate adults’ (35-63 years old) perceptions of risk in the big-data era and how it figures in their everyday life. We developed decision-making scenarios for socio-economic, environmental and health topics that involve modelling with personal value systems alongside Gapminder word map data. Going beyond the idea of risk in statistical theory, we attempt to gain an understanding of the processes by which adults assess risks.

Risk And Decision Making: The “Logic” Of Probability, Manfred Borovcnik Jun 2015

Risk And Decision Making: The “Logic” Of Probability, Manfred Borovcnik

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Risk is a hot topic. There is an international trend to use examples of risk or the concept of risk in the early teaching of probability. It enriches the problems, it widens the contexts, and it motivates the students to learn probability. This paper illustrates the notion of risk as a multi-faceted concept. The diverse perceptions start with language where risk is used in very different ways. The overlap of risk and hazard is not restricted to the technical context of safety and reliability; Knight’s seminal work on risk and uncertainty has its definite impact on today’s perception of the …

The Role Of Probabilistic Reasoning Abilities On Adolescent Risk Taking, Maria Anna Donati, Francesca Chiesi, Caterina Primi Jun 2015

The Role Of Probabilistic Reasoning Abilities On Adolescent Risk Taking, Maria Anna Donati, Francesca Chiesi, Caterina Primi

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The aim of this work was to investigate the role of the cognitive system and the affective system on adolescents’ risk taking in gambling tasks characterized as different on the basis of information given to decision makers. In Study 1, we explored the role of probabilistic reasoning and sensation seeking on decision making in a non-risky context (Non-Gambling Task) and a risky context (Gambling Task) in which no preliminary information were given to participants. Results showed that adolescents referred to probabilistic reasoning only in the Non-Gambling Task. In Study 2, we explored the role of probabilistic reasoning and sensation seeking …

Judgment Of Association Between Potential Factors And Associated Risk In 2x2 Tables: A Study With Psychology Students, Carmen Batanero, Gustavo R. Cañadas, Carmen Díaz, Maria M. Gea

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This study was aimed to evaluate the accuracy and strategies used in the estimation of association between potential factors and associated risks when data are presented in 2x2 tables. A sample of 414 undergraduate Psychology students from three different Spanish universities was given three different tasks (direct and inverse association and perfect independence) where they had to estimate such association. Most participants judged association in the task where there was perfect independence, but the data contradicted the students’ previous expectations. The estimation of association was consistent with the perception of association and the accuracy of estimates increased with correct strategies. …

Reproductive Performance Of Kittlitz's Murrelet In A Glaciated Landscape, Icy Bay, Alaska, Usa, Michelle L. Kissling, Scott M. Gende, Stephen B. Lewis, Paul Lukacs Apr 2015

Reproductive Performance Of Kittlitz's Murrelet In A Glaciated Landscape, Icy Bay, Alaska, Usa, Michelle L. Kissling, Scott M. Gende, Stephen B. Lewis, Paul Lukacs

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a dispersed-nesting seabird endemic to Alaska and eastern Russia that may have experienced considerable population declines in some parts of its range in the past few decades. Poor reproduction has been suggested as the demographic bottleneck, yet there are no direct estimates of reproduction in a glaciated area where this species reaches its highest densities at sea during the breeding season. The lack of demographic information in glacial habitats has limited our ability to interpret population trends and to clarify whether the presence of glaciers affects reproductive performance. Between 2007 and 2012, we …

Two-Dimensional Hydraulic Modeling Of Dam Breach Inundation, Joseph T. Smith Apr 2015

Two-Dimensional Hydraulic Modeling Of Dam Breach Inundation, Joseph T. Smith

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

There are about 194 permitted dams within the Clark Fork Watershed in Montana alone; 51 of these are classified as high hazard. Congruent with state and federal guidelines, all of these high hazard dams are required to have an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) that includes dam breach inundation mapping. The purpose of having an EAP is to protect public safety. Unfortunately, many of these EAP’s are outdated and contain inaccurate data.

Historically, one-dimensional hydraulic modeling software, such as HEC-RAS, has been the primary method to model dam breach inundation. One-dimensional models have yielded good results, but can be challenging to …

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Flathead River to Lake (R2L) Initiative is a collaborative effort that brings people together to conserve and restore the Flathead River and Flathead Lake's natural heritage – excellent water quality, outstanding scenic and recreational values, highly productive farmlands, and abundant fish and wildlife--through education, conservation and restoration projects. The R2L Initiative focuses on the main stem of the Flathead River from Bad Rock Canyon to the North Shore of Flathead Lake in Northwest Montana due to significant development threats and high resource values in this area. Our goal is to protect and enhance critical wetlands, riparian areas, floodplains, the …

Nutrient Loading And Proposed Bmp’S For Browns Gulch, Sarah Hamblock, Raja Nagisetty, Kumar Ganesan, Bill Drury Apr 2015

Nutrient Loading And Proposed Bmp’S For Browns Gulch, Sarah Hamblock, Raja Nagisetty, Kumar Ganesan, Bill Drury

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Nutrients are essential to support stream ecosystems, however, if present in excess may lead to algal blooms, excessive aquatic weeds, and alternation of natural aquatic ecosystems. Silver Bow Creek (SBC), the headwater stream of the Clark Fork River, is listed as impaired for nutrients (total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP)), by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. Browns Gulch is a major tributary to SBC, and drains agricultural and forested lands. To meet target nutrient TMDL concentrations in SBC, the tributary load inputs of TN and TP must be reduced by 93% in Browns Gulch. To identify the sources …

Religious Freedom And Workers’ Compensation: Big Sky Colony V. Montana Department Of Labor And Industry, Mel Cousins Apr 2015

Religious Freedom And Workers’ Compensation: Big Sky Colony V. Montana Department Of Labor And Industry, Mel Cousins

Montana Law Review Online

Social security litigation and health care litigation have played prominent roles in the development of the jurisprudence concerning the religious clauses of the U.S. Constitution. This note considers an interesting recent decision of the Montana Supreme Court that addressed the constitutionality of an extension of coverage under the Montana workers’ compensation code to colonies of the Hutterite (or Hutterian or Hutterische) Brethren Church. In Big Sky Colony v. Montana Department of Labor and Industry, the Montana Supreme Court, by a narrow majority, held the extension constitutional. The Court held that the extension of coverage did not breach the Free …
