Colonization Of Lutzomyia Verrucarum And Lutzomyia Longipalpis Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) By Bartonella Bacilliformis, The Etiologic Agent Of Carrion's Disease, James M. Battisti, Phillip G. Lawyer, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella bacilliformis is a pathogenic bacterium transmitted to humans presumably by bites of phlebotomine sand flies, infection with which results in a bi-phasic syndrome termed Carrion's disease. After constructing a low-passage GFP-labeled strain of B. bacilliformis, we artificially infected Lutzomyia verrucarum and L. longipalpis populations, and subsequently monitored colonization of sand flies by fluorescence microscopy. Initially, colonization of the two fly species was indistinguishable, with bacteria exhibiting a high degree of motility, yet still confined to the abdominal midgut. After 48h, B. bacilliformis transitioned from bacillus-shape to a non-motile, small coccoid form and appeared to be digested along with …

Toward A More Ecologically Informed View Of Severe Forest Fires, Richard L. Hutto, Robert E. Keane, Rosemary L. Sherriff, Christopher T. Rota, Lisa A. Eby, Victoria A. Saab

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We use the historical presence of high-severity fire patches in mixed-conifer forests of the western United States to make several points that we hope will encourage development of a more ecologically informed view of severe wildland fire effects. First, many plant and animal species use, and have sometimes evolved to depend on, severely burned forest conditions for their persistence. Second, evidence from fire history studies also suggests that a complex mosaic of severely burned conifer patches was common historically in the West. Third, to maintain ecological integrity in forests born of mixed-severity fire, land managers will have to accept some …

The Event At Rebecca Farm 2015, Megan Schultz

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

This study was conducted for Montana Equestrian Events, Inc. to provide insight into the characteristics of attendees to the fourteenth annual The Event at Rebecca Farm. Paper surveys were completed by 473 attendees of the event. Results show that 60% of attendees were residents of Montana and of those 29% came from outside of Flathead County. Visitors spent an average of 6.29 nights in the Flathead Valley area. More people spent money on hotel/motel, restaurant/bar, and gasoline while visiting the area than other spending categories. Respondents to the survey reported total spending of $261,020 in the Flathead Valley. Results provide …

Dynamics Of Thermally Induced Ice Streams Simulated With A Higher-Order Flow Model, Douglas Brinkerhoff, Jesse Johnson Sep 2015

Dynamics Of Thermally Induced Ice Streams Simulated With A Higher-Order Flow Model, Douglas Brinkerhoff, Jesse Johnson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We use a new discretization technique to solve the higher-order thermomechanically coupled equations of glacier evolution. We find that under radially symmetric continuum equations, small perturbations in symmetry due to the discretization are sufficient to produce the initiation of non-symmetric thermomechanical instabilities which we interpret as ice streams, in good agreement with previous studies which have indicated a similar instability. We find that the inclusion of membrane stresses regularizes the size of predicted streams, eliminating the ill-posedness evident in previous investigations of ice stream generation through thermomechanical instability. Ice streams exhibit strongly irregular periodicity which is influenced by neighboring ice …

The Science And Practice Of River Restoration, Ellen E. Wohl, Stuart N. Lane, Andrew C. Wilcox Aug 2015

The Science And Practice Of River Restoration, Ellen E. Wohl, Stuart N. Lane, Andrew C. Wilcox

Geosciences Faculty Publications

River restoration is one of the most prominent areas of applied water-resources science. From an initial focus on enhancing fish habitat or river appearance, primarily through structural modification of channel form, restoration has expanded to incorporate a wide variety of management activities designed to enhance river process and form. Restoration is conducted on headwater streams, large lowland rivers, and entire river networks in urban, agricultural, and less intensively human-altered environments. We critically examine how contemporary practitioners approach river restoration and challenges for implementing restoration, which include clearly identified objectives, holistic understanding of rivers as ecosystems, and the role of restoration …

Idaho's Ag-Gag Law Goes Down And Other States May Be Next, Stacey L. Gordon

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

In 2014, an undercover investigator working for Mercy For Animals documented horrific animal cruelty at the Dry Creek Dairy in Hansen, Idaho. Video of the abuse was released nationally. The owners of the dairy instituted reforms and the abusers were prosecuted. But the law that was passed this time, within months of the video’s release, protects neither the animals nor the food supply, but the agriculture industry.

Testing Factors Influencing Identification Rates Of Similar Species During Abundance Surveys, Anne Louise Schaefer, Paul Lukacs, Michelle L. Kissling Aug 2015

Testing Factors Influencing Identification Rates Of Similar Species During Abundance Surveys, Anne Louise Schaefer, Paul Lukacs, Michelle L. Kissling

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Most abundance estimation methods assume that all sampled individuals are identified correctly. In practice, this assumption may be difficult to meet and can bias abundance estimates, especially when morphologically similar species overlap in range. Over the past 2 decades, Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) populations appear to have declined across parts of their Alaskan range, where they co-occur with the Marbled Murrelet (B. marmoratus). Recently, the reliability of Kittlitz's Murrelet declines have been questioned due to variability and uncertainty in species identification between the 2 species. We conduced a field experiment to quantify misidentification and partial identification …

Temporal And Spatial Changes In The Pattern Of Iba1 And Cd68 Staining In The Rat Brain Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Debbie Smith, Diane Brooks, Eric Wohlgehagen, Thomas Rau, David Poulsen

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

We have previously demonstrated that acute treatment with low dose methamphetamine is neuroprotectivein a rat model of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Using gene expression analysis, we further showed that methamphetamine treatment significantly reduced the expression of proinflammatory genes after severe TBI. Therefore, to further investigate the potential effects of methamphetamine treatment on the neuroinflammatory response, we examined immunofluorescent staining of Iba1 and CD68, two marker of neuroinflammation, in the rat lateral fluid percussion injury model of severe TBI. In this study, we observed temporal and spatial alterations in the pattern of Iba1 and CD68 labeling within two weeks after …

Estimating Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Abundance Using Noninvasive Sampling At A Mineral Lick Within A National Park Wilderness Area, Kathryn A. Schoenecker, Mary Kay Watry, Laura E. Ellison, Michael K. Schwartz, Gordon Luikart

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Conservation of species requires accurate population estimates. We used genetic markers from feces to determine bighorn sheep abundance for a herd that was hypothesized to be declining and in need of population status monitoring. We sampled from a small but accessible portion of the population's range where animals natural congregate at a natural mineral lick to test whether we could accurately estimate population size by sampling from an area where animals concentrate. We used mark-recapture analysis to derive population estimates, and compared estimates from this smaller spatial sampling to estimates from sampling of the entire bighorn sheep range. We found …
