Ionic Liquid-Solvated Chitosan Nanoparticles As A Novel Method Of Treating Atopic Dermatitis, Leslie Bell Dec 2021

Ionic Liquid-Solvated Chitosan Nanoparticles As A Novel Method Of Treating Atopic Dermatitis, Leslie Bell

Honors Theses

Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is an inflammatory skin disease resulting in dry, red, and itchy skin that affects almost 20% of the population of the Western world. This disease creates a physical, emotional, as well as financial burden on those affected, as well as their families. Current treatment options are only somewhat effective, and do not have a long duration of release and therefore efficiency. Furthermore, treatment plans involving corticosteroids need to be closely regulated to monitor side effects such as skin thinning. Other options include topical tacrolimus, emollients, and oral antihistamines, each with varied side effects. This project is …

Pragmatic Deficits In Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Paige Kessler Dec 2021

Pragmatic Deficits In Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Paige Kessler

Honors Theses

Background: Most studies have found pragmatic language skills to be poorer in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) populations, but there is no conclusive evidence.

Aim: Our aim was to conduct a meta-analysis of pragmatic language abilities in ADHD populations to more definitively demonstrate the extent of pragmatic language deficits in these populations as compared to typically developing (TD) populations.

Methods and procedures: Journal articles were identified using the search terms ((attention deficit) OR (adhd)) AND (pragmatics). Identified studies were screened and reviewed for inclusion criteria, descriptive information, and outcome variables. A meta-analysis was conducted, and individual effect sizes and overall effect size …

What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations On Social Isolation In Alabama, Jared Ragland, Catherine Wilkins Dec 2021

What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations On Social Isolation In Alabama, Jared Ragland, Catherine Wilkins

Study the South

"Social isolation is both a phrase and an experience that has defined the past year in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Jared Ragland’s ongoing photographic travelogue, What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations on Social Isolation in Alabama, expressly evokes the loneliness that has characterized this period; solitary subjects inhabit these frames, and many images in the series are devoid of people altogether. One can imagine the photographer, alone, navigating deserted landscapes with only a camera as his companion, documenting the recent ravaging of the public sphere. Yet, while the theme is certainly au courant, What …

Charleston, Mississippi, Jessica Cobb Dec 2021

Charleston, Mississippi, Jessica Cobb

Fall 2021 Showcase

This photo series is centered around Charleston, a small town in North Mississippi, which fashions itself as the “Gateway to the Delta”. Despite being born and raised in North Mississippi, I have never experienced Charleston until this project. This sequence highlights the contrast between being one of the most poverty-stricken counties in Mississippi and the community’s desire for improvement.

Jessica Cobb is a native of North Mississippi. I am a new mom and first-generation college student, and I am currently a senior at the University of Mississippi pursuing a degree in Legal Studies with a minor in Southern Studies. Taking …

The Hope And Resilience Of Holly Springs, Janeth Jackson Dec 2021

The Hope And Resilience Of Holly Springs, Janeth Jackson

Fall 2021 Showcase

I am motivated to illustrate the presence, intimacy, and strength of chocolate cities. I use photography to reveal how people and their love and determination play an integral role in a community’s resilience. My photographs highlight Holly Springs’ delightful citizens and their occupations and the traditional and modern localities within the city. This exploration helps me engage with the community in ways most have neglected. My goal is to highlight the significance of a strong community and illustrate how Holly Springs is truly a place of love, kindness, and rich history.

A native of Moss Point, MS, Janeth Jackson is …

Taylor, Mississippi, Kathryn Mccullouch Dec 2021

Taylor, Mississippi, Kathryn Mccullouch

Fall 2021 Showcase

The photos in this series were taken in Taylor, a small town between Water Valley and Oxford in the hills of north Mississippi. I chose to photograph Taylor in part because my grandmother took me there many times when I was little, and in returning for this project I was able to explore the town in ways I had not seen before. The photos on Main Street show the truly antique side of Taylor, where the buildings have not changed in decades. Then another side of Taylor is revealed through the development of Plein Air, where the businesses and homes …

We Had To Know Who We Were, We Had To Know Who We Weren’T: Jewish Race And Place In The American South, Emily Williams Dec 2021

We Had To Know Who We Were, We Had To Know Who We Weren’T: Jewish Race And Place In The American South, Emily Williams

Fall 2021 Showcase

For as long as there have been “Southerners,” there have been southern Jews. An understudied, and to some, an entirely unknown community, Jews have occupied an unsteady, undefined place in the South’s racial binary. They have frequently attained a degree of provisional whiteness, and benefited from the privileges that come with it, only to be periodically reminded that their whiteness is impermanent and contextual. My work seeks to explore both the historical and contemporary Jewish experience of race in the south through photography and oral history. The goals are twofold: to preserve the memory of Jewish communities where they no …

Whirlpool Trails, Emily Williams Dec 2021

Whirlpool Trails, Emily Williams

Fall 2021 Showcase

The Whirlpool Trails on the south end of the University of Mississippi’s campus are perhaps the most wild place in Oxford. Stepping off of the main trail leads to a startlingly wide variety of landscapes, given the trail’s small footprint. A bamboo grove hides behind kudzu covered trees, red clay paths pounded by the more adventurous runners are surrounded by wild grasses and scrubby brush. A grove of pines so tall and spindly they should not be able to hold themselves open up into a clearing with a glassy pond. Through this series, I hope to transport the viewer into …
