To determine the historic Virginia tribe or tribes from which the Lumbee may be descended, I have decided to search the records of North Carolina and Virginia and see where surnames linked to the Lumbee in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries appear. My goal is to see which, if any, have documented ties to specific Virginia Indian communities.

Sounds Of Survival: Language Loss, Retention, And Restructuring Among American Indian Peoples In The Southeast, Clare Dannenberg

This paper investigates indigenous language loss in the Southeastern United States, involving the Eastern Cherokee, Occaneechi, Chickahominy, Haliwa-Saponi, Nansemond, Pamunkey, Catawba, the Monacan tribes, and particularly considers the Lumbee. As will be evident, the resiliency of Native peoples is symbolically manifested in cases like the Lumbee, where ancestral languages have been lost or simply forgotten.

This thesis concerns the Brigate Rosse, an Italian terrorist organization that was active from the late-1960s to the mid-1980s, the networks through which the Brigate Rosse chose to work, how these networks helped/hindered the success of the Brigate Rosse, and how the murder of Aldo Moro marked the turning point in the BR s success. To gather data, T looked at primary sources, such as communications that were sent by the BR and government documents, as well as secondary sources which examined the actions of the Brigate Rosse, the networks they maintained, and the social and political circumstances of Italy …

The following work is an attempt to understand why separatist movements become violent. In any given region of the world under any given state, there will always be a group of people who are not content with the present order of government. If this group is large enough, it will most likely try to alter the structure of the government, which often takes the form of separatism. I want to understand the methods of these separatist movements and specifically, why some resort to violence and others do not. The first part of my thesis analyzes different separatist movements. This thesis is a result of an in-depth analysis of the three thousand plus propaganda posters used in the United States during World War II. The bulk of these posters are housed at National Archives II in College Park, Maryland. The analysis was conducted within the context of several questions. What were the goals of the propagandists? How were those goals visually represented in the posters? What were the visual themes? Why were these goals and themes deemed necessary?
