Synopsis
Feminine hygiene is a billion-dollar industry and women of color are the largest consumers of feminine hygiene products—particularly vaginal douching; studies link this frequent use of douching to high levels of harmful chemical compounds and adverse health effects. In researching hygiene rituals, the phrase “fresh and clean” came up repeatedly when Black women expressed feelings that came with their use or purchase of tampons, powders, soaps, sprays, douches, wipes, lotions, suppositories, napkins, and creams guaranteed to tame the odorous, fluid draining, and menstruating vagina.
FRESH AND CLEAN is a novel interested in the cultural obsession of vaginal cleanliness. The …

On the 14th of April 2014, a group of insurgents that the world later know to be Boko Haram, kidnapped 276 mostly female students in Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria. The disaster led to the death of thousands of military personnel and vigilante group members, mostly young men. Since that night, millions of people have been displaced. This thesis focused on inter and intra African migrations that result in the aftermath of the abduction.

George Whitefield Chadwick And Robert Ayres Barnet’S Tabasco, John-Peter Springer Ford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Until recently George Whitefield Chadwick’s burlesque opera Tabasco (1894) had been largely forgotten. In 2018, however, conductor Paul Mauffray completed a reconstruction of Tabasco that has brought renewed attention to this seldom heard work. Set to a libretto by Robert Ayres Barnet, Tabasco was commissioned as the third in a series of comic operas by the Boston Men’s Army Cadets as fundraiser for the construction of a new armory. This thesis explores the history of Tabasco from its inception through the national tour produced by Thomas Q. Seabrooke’s Comic Opera Company, which would eventually lead to the withdrawal of the …

Contra Nationis Natum: Black Classicists Respond To Birth Of A Nation, Jackie Murray
Lecture Series
In this lecture, Dr. Jackie Murray (U. of Kentucky) looks at the reception of antiquity in the literature, theatre, and cinema of Charles Chestnutt, Kelly Miller, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Drusilla Dunjee Houston in their attempt to undermine the White supremacist collective memory of the reconstruction era that D. W. Griffith and others were concocting to contribute to the naturalization and justification of the racial class divisions in America, divisions that were becoming increasingly unmanageable for wealthy elites and politicians at the turn of the 20th century.
