Bridging Souths: Interdisciplinarity And Knowledge Production In Southern Studies, Matthew David Streets
Bridging Souths: Interdisciplinarity And Knowledge Production In Southern Studies, Matthew David Streets
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the viability of southern studies, a regional studies project on the study of the U.S. South, as an academic field of study and institutionalized site of multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary knowledge production. Southern studies has undergone numerous turns and paradigm shifts since its institutionalization in the 1970s. These ontological, epistemological, and methodological developments have reoriented the objectives of interdisciplinary knowledge production. Despite the present permeability of disciplinary boundaries, the institutional structure and its racial, capitalist, and disciplinary hierarchies hinder communication and collaboration across disciplines and fields and between the “ivory tower†and “real world.†Understanding the impact …
Donor-Acceptor (D-A) Type Semiconducting Materials For Optoelectronic Applications, Tharindu Ranathunge
Donor-Acceptor (D-A) Type Semiconducting Materials For Optoelectronic Applications, Tharindu Ranathunge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The need for intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) in industrial applications such as microchips, capacitors, organic solar cells, and printed electronics is wide-ranging and ever-growing. Among many methods to synthesize ICPs, electropolymerization has become a convenient method for creating and characterizing complex organic copolymers having intrinsic electronic conductivity, including the donor (D)-acceptor (A) class of electronically conducting polymers. Electrochemical analysis has proven the unique redox properties of these polymers as thin films. Specifically, ICPs comprised of electron-rich D and electron-deficient A moieties have been shown to possess intrinsic electronic conductivity and unique optical and electronic properties. Herein, we discuss the design, …
Determining Implementation Barriers For Green Stormwater Infrastructure (Gsi) Practices For Urban Flood Control, Liya Abera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An increase in impervious land covers, such as asphalt and buildings from new construction and land development projects, results in cities experiencing flooding events. In 2021, the US was impacted by significant weather and climate disasters, including two flooding events and 11 severe storms. In addition to flooding events, excess runoff carries pollutants to receiving waters causing low water quality and habitat loss. To minimize flooding events and maintain the quality of receiving water bodies, stormwater runoff should be handled near its source. The installation of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) is one sustainable method of addressing stormwater runoff problems. GSI …

Low-Velocity Impact, Vibration And Shock Response Of Unstitched/Stitched E- And S- Glass/Vinyl Ester Composites, Shahriar Chowdhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the effects of through-thickness stitching on the dynamic properties, low-velocity impact and shock responses of stitched and unstitched E- and S- Glass/Vinyl Ester composites have been investigated. The stiffness and loss factor (inherent damping) properties are obtained from impulse-frequency response experiments using the hammer excitation method. Drop weight impact testing machine was used to carry out low-velocity punch shear tests on the composite specimens following ASTM D3763 Standard, and shock tube apparatus was used to determine center point deflection under blast loading. The stitching increased the dynamic flexural modulus by 13% for E- and 8% for S- …

Critical Thinking Teaching Practices In Community College, Andrea Jordan Crowley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more ubiquitous, and machine learning continues to optimize systems and data, the human contribution to our working and social worlds must evolve to be more sophisticated. Labeled as the fourth industrial revolution by the World Economic Forum (2019), employment roles comprised of repetitive tasks and rote analysis will no longer be needed because machines and artificial intelligence will be able to program themselves to perform these functions. Many experts forecast that for every low-skilled occupation a new, more sophisticated role will be invented (Skilton & Hovesepian, 2018).
Organizational Green Claims And Consumer Green Perceptions In The Foodservice Industry, Jangwoo Jo
Organizational Green Claims And Consumer Green Perceptions In The Foodservice Industry, Jangwoo Jo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to the ever-growing consumer demands and global pressures for more sustainable business operations, corporations disclose their sustainable practices, products, and services to enhance their environmental image. Consumer green perceptions resulting from those organizational green claims have not been the focus of foodservice research. The application of green performance dimensionality of the foodservice domain identified that organizational green claims regarding food, environment and administration increase consumer green confusion and green trust at the same time. Based on the results of CFA, SEM, and multigroup analyses, this study suggests implications both theoretical and practical.
Bland Treacherous Water: Diluvial Epistemologies In Flood Narratives Of The Us South Since 1927, Sara Stephens Loomis
Bland Treacherous Water: Diluvial Epistemologies In Flood Narratives Of The Us South Since 1927, Sara Stephens Loomis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the relationship between southern flood narratives and the epistemological changes wrought by the Anthropocene epoch in the past hundred years. It participates in the turns toward ecocriticism and environmental justice within 21st-century southern studies, situating the US South as a testing ground for ecosystem epistemologies shaped by overabundant water. An expansion of Steve Mentz’s call for a blue humanities that shifts focus from land to sea, Bland Treacherous Water explores what happens to Anthropocene subjects’ ways of knowing their environments when waterways inundate the land itself. By investigating works by William Faulkner, James Dickey, Cormac McCarthy, Marilou …

Development And Evaluation Of Performance Models For Asphalt, Concrete, And Composite Pavements Using Machine Learning, Rulian Ferreira De Almeida Barros
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transportation infrastructures account for a considerable portion of public investments, which serve as the backbone of a country’s economy by providing essential services to businesses and people. In the United States, public investments in transportation infrastructure assets represent trillions of dollars. The U.S road network consists of about 4 million miles, being the world’s largest, longest, and biggest transportation system. Paved roads account for 2.6 million miles, and 93% of them are surfaced with asphalt. However, a portion of the paved roads consists of asphalt overlaid concrete pavements, also known as composite pavements. When concrete pavements start to fail, they …
Investigating Sound And Gear Modification As A Means Of Reducing Shark Bycatch, Eduardo Josue Rangel
Investigating Sound And Gear Modification As A Means Of Reducing Shark Bycatch, Eduardo Josue Rangel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sharks are unintentionally captured during commercial fishing operations and discarded, known as bycatch. Sharks captured in this manner have high mortality rates resulting in hundreds of millions of sharks killed annually. Longline operations have the highest instances of bycatch. In this study, two methods for reducing shark bycatch were investigated. A simple gear modification on longline leaders was tested by substituting monofilament (mono) leaders with ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (spectra) leaders. A recording of thunder was tested during longline fishing for a deterrent effect. The experiments were conducted simultaneously on a 915 m longline with 50 leaders with each leader alternating between …
Latent Profiles Of Young Adults Based On E-Cigarette Outcome Expectancies, Victoria Alicia Torres
Latent Profiles Of Young Adults Based On E-Cigarette Outcome Expectancies, Victoria Alicia Torres
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: While cigarette smoking has steadily declined, electronic cigarette use (e.g., e-cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems [ENDS]) has led a new generation to become addicted to nicotine (Cummings & Proctor, 2014; USDHHS, 2014). Some individuals believe these products have the potential to provide benefits in helping smokers quit; however, many harmful aspects have been uniquely associated with e-cigarette use (e.g., toxicity, vape-specific injuries, gateway effects, etc.). If e-cigarettes are to be established as useful cessation tools, researchers must better understand e-cigarette use beliefs and associated clinical targets. Purpose: To better inform e-cigarette prevention and intervention, investigators developed profiles of young …

After the HME and 3DP fabrication of the films, the …
Investigating The Acoustic Properties Of Polymer Microspheres Suspended In Gelatin, Alexander Orlin Denette
Investigating The Acoustic Properties Of Polymer Microspheres Suspended In Gelatin, Alexander Orlin Denette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent advancements in materials science have produced materials that exhibit properties with values outside of naturally observed ranges. These properties are driven by overlapping, low order resonant modes, and are limited to small response ranges close to harmonic frequencies. This study aims to see if the same properties can be recreated with high order resonant modes from distributions of small scatterers. A method for holding random distributions of scatterers in space was created, and two types of acoustic measurements were taken. Resonant frequencies and their scattering order were identified, and the resulting scattered fields were resolved.

This MFA thesis accompanies a short documentary film encompassing a “passing of the torch” story between Eric White (GoDiva Holliday) and his drag daughter, Justin Tyler (DeePression Holliday.) After twenty years of performing and directing drag shows in Tupelo, MS, White makes the decision to let go of his passion and focus on himself. He ensures that his drag daughter, Holbrook, carries on the legacy of creating LGTBQ spaces in the conservative South. This story will also touch on the familial relationship between the two drag performers who both grew up in small-town Mississippi but in different eras. The work …
Exploratory Analysis Of Effects Of Data On Adversarial Perturbations, Hamza Ali Zafar
Exploratory Analysis Of Effects Of Data On Adversarial Perturbations, Hamza Ali Zafar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the amount of data being produced has increased tremendously. This data has allowed us to create and train machine learning models that are being used nowadays. Though these models have proven to be very effective in classification and regression problems, they do have a vulnerability. This vulnerability is exploited by adding adversarial perturbations to the original data or in the deployed model. These adversarial attacks are done by making minute changes to the data to confuse the machine learning model. This can lead to models’ misrepresentation and drop the accuracy. For the span of this paper, I …
