Introduction—Myosin II has been investigated with optical trapping, but single motor-filament assay arrangements are not reflective of the complex cellular environment. To understand how myosin interactions propagate up in scale to accomplish system force generation, we devised a novel actomyosin ensemble optical trapping assay that reflects the hierarchy and compliancy of a physiological environment and is modular for interrogating force effectors.
Methods—Hierarchical actomyosin bundles were formed in vitro. Fluorescent template and cargo actin filaments (AF) were assembled in a flow cell and bundled by myosin. Beads were added in the presence of ATP to bind the cargo AF …

The branching fractions of the decays B+→ηâ "+νâ "and B+→η′â "+νâ "are measured, where â "is either an electron or a muon, using a data sample of 711 fb-1 containing 772×106BB¯ pairs collected at the I (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e-collider. To reduce the dependence of the result on the form factor model, the measurement is performed over the entire q2 range. The resulting branching fractions are B(B+→ηâ "+νâ ")=(2.83±0.55(stat.)±0.34(syst.))×10-5 and B(B+→η′â "+νâ ")=(2.79±1.29(stat.)±0.30(syst.))×10-5.

Rule Learning And Swarm Intelligence Techniques For Feature Selection Optimization, Tina Gui
Rule Learning And Swarm Intelligence Techniques For Feature Selection Optimization, Tina Gui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In mathematics and computer science, solving an optimization problem is to find the best solution from all possible outcomes. In this dissertation work, two kinds of algorithms are considered to address the problems in Microarray Analysis, Numerical Optimization and Wireless Sensor Networks. In gene expression analysis and classification, feature selection is an important process of selecting the optimal subset of relevant features or useful data for further study and prediction. The main objective of feature selection is challenging due to the large search space, computational time, imbalanced samples, and quality of the selected drivers. It is necessary to construct a …

Mississippi Modernism: The River Valley And Race In American Culture, 1892-1945, William C. Palmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi Modernism looks to the Mississippi River Valley of the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first few decades of the twentieth century to analyze the ways individuals expressed and determined their experience in the changing world. By engaging with theories of modernity from Marshall Berman and the Black modernism of Houston A. Baker, Jr. this work proposes the Mississippi watershed as a region where individuals indulge in the processes of modernism remaking the environments, both urban and rural, surrounding them. By thinking about the “dry†and “wet†valleys envisioned by European settlers as Christopher Morris terms it, …
Measurement Of Inclusive Upsilon(4s) To Upsilon(1s) Decays At Belle Ii, Justin Wade Guilliams
Measurement Of Inclusive Upsilon(4s) To Upsilon(1s) Decays At Belle Ii, Justin Wade Guilliams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, a measurement of the branching fraction for inclusive $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays to $\Upsilon(1S)$, where $\Upsilon(1S)$ decays to $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$, is investigated. A similar study has not been conducted for decades. Such an inclusive measurement may be compared to the sum of exclusive branching fractions in order to check the completeness of the known exclusive decays. A disparity between the measured exclusive decays and the inclusive measurement would be suggestive of additional decay modes that are accessible beyond naive expectations. This analysis is further extended to include measurements of …

The Upland Complex (UC) on the southern half of Crowley’s Ridge in Northeastern Arkansas is a 2.6 to 0.2 Ma high-energy, braided sand and gravel containing two thin zones of clay preserved near the top of the UC. Minimum age of the clay was acquired from overlying Brown and Foreman (2012) thermoluminescence ages and maximum age was acquired from Odom et al. (2019) Al/Be age of the basal UC. This project aims to discern if these clay layers formed from pyroclastic material and if so, what the provenance of the parent material is. The investigation of the clay layers included …
Using Geophysics To Understand The Shallow Geologic Framework Beneath The National Mall And Memorial Parks Of Washington, D.C., And Map The Trend Of A Quaternary Fault, Kristian Macias
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Adams Mill fault, exposed near the original entrance to the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., thrusts Cambrian basement 2.4 m over an unconsolidated gravel. The fault is inferred to trend southeast on geological maps. A 451 ± 34 ka luminescence age for the faulted gravel, obtained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 2016, indicates the Adams Mill fault is a Quaternary fault, and this has implications for seismic hazard analyses of the region. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and seismic refraction microtremor (ReMi) techniques were used to locate and identify the Adams Mill fault …

3d Reinforced Composite Face Sheets And Functionally Graded Polymeric Foam Cores For Blast And Impact Hazard Mitigation, Suman Babu Ukyam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lightweight sandwich structures are being used in aeronautics, marine, automotive, and offshore structural applications considering their high specific strength and stiffness along with energy absorption features. Sandwich structures comprise of face sheets typically made of aluminum or fiber-reinforced composites bonded to core materials like metallic foams, honeycomb, polymeric foams or balsa wood having a cellular structure. One main limitation of composite material face sheet is the absence of fibers in thickness direction, which greatly reduces damage tolerance and impact resistance. Current research is focused on investigating the dynamic behavior of sandwich structures having composite laminates with 3D reinforcement as face …
Genomic Analysis And Metabolic Potential Of Myxobacteria, Hanan Albataineh
Genomic Analysis And Metabolic Potential Of Myxobacteria, Hanan Albataineh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Myxobacteria are known for their large genomes that bestow them with a distinct lifestyle that is characterized by fruiting body formation, gliding motility, social interactions, predation, and secondary metabolite production. The powerful combination of whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatics-driven analysis of sequence data has delivered unexpected insights into myxobacterial microbial communities. We applied these two approaches to investigate the chemical space and biosynthetic potential of myxobacteria. Mining different myxobacterial genomes for biosynthetic gene clusters led us to the discovery of a cryptic acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) synthase encoded in the genome of the myxobacterium Archangium gephyra. Bioinformatic analysis of this AHL synthase …
Evaluating The Effects Of Thermal Cycling On Bone (Cold-Blooded Vs Warm-Blooded), Parker Reed Brewster
Evaluating The Effects Of Thermal Cycling On Bone (Cold-Blooded Vs Warm-Blooded), Parker Reed Brewster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thermal cycling, a global threat that is increasingly becoming more real, is a stressing event that can drastically change material properties. Thermal cycling can be used for material strengthening and optimization, but more often than that, thermal cycling is a nuisance that weakens the integrity of structures and coatings. To understand and build better designs that resist the effects of thermal cycling, we look to nature. Though warm-blooded animals regulate their body temperatures within an exceptionally tight range, cold-blooded animals experience relatively extreme temperature fluctuations, and oftentimes, in less than a 5-hour time period. In other words, cold-blooded animals experience …
Design And Fabrication Of Additively Manufactured Arm Cast Using Topology Optimization, Tereza Janatova
Design And Fabrication Of Additively Manufactured Arm Cast Using Topology Optimization, Tereza Janatova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The traditional approach to casting non-operative arm fractures involves fully covering a large portion of the forearm, often including a portion of the palm. The use of gypsum plaster and plaster materials often results in cutaneous problems or in more severe cases swelling, pressure sores, or deep vein thrombosis. Other disadvantages include the weight, time it takes to harden, or the damage in contact with water. The objective of the project is to create a durable but breathable custom-made design for an arm brace that will replace the traditional solutions by overcoming their disadvantages. Several research groups and companies provide …

Protein Redesign And De Novo Design Approaches To Create Artificial Nickel-Dependent Metalloenzymes, Dhanashree Selvan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Energy crisis, energy demand and climate change are the major challenges of this century. As we face these challenges, it’s important that we depend on alternate energy forms like renewable energy sources and at the same devise ways to tackle the greenhouse effect. Therefore, it is important to move towards a carbon neutral energy economy where we can convert atmospheric carbon dioxide back into organic carbon and depend on clean energy sources like Hydrogen. These energy concerns can be tackled well if we understand the role of enzymes responsible for various biological reactions.Metals play a variety of unexpected roles in …
