Assessing The Accuracy Of Dental Age Estimation Methods In A Native American Pediatric Sample, Cal Matthew Mcgehee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dental age estimation is a common method used to determine the age of juvenile individuals in forensics, medicine, and bio-archaeology. This thesis examines how accurate three dental development methods are in estimating the ages of two Native American sample groups. Further, it will explore how different variables like sex, age, secular (temporal) change, and an individual’s body mass index (BMI) affect dental development rates in the two groups of individuals. The first group consists of 60 Native Americans between the ages of 7 and 21 years of age who received dental work between 1970-1990 by Dr. James Economides of Albuquerque, …
Fabrication And Evaluation Of A Dual-Drug Loaded Immediate And Sustained Release Ophthalmic Inserts For The Management Of Keratitis; Moxifloxacin And Voriconazole, Jui Pendse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbial keratitis, if not treated in time, can exacerbate critical conditions and ultimately lead to loss of vision. Incidences of bacterial and fungal keratitis in developing countries are far more compared to developed nations due to socioeconomic and environmental factors. Many regions of these developing countries might have limited resources to identify the causative agent in time, and accurately, before choosing appropriate treatment. In cases of such infections, empiric therapy is typically commenced with topical antibacterial for bacterial infections and antifungal for fungal keratitis. Moxifloxacin (MOX) is a fourth-generation antibacterial drug effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Voriconazole (VORI), …

Exploring Structure-Activity Relationships In Molecular Catalysts For C-H Bond Oxidation And Co2 Reduction, Zane Turner
Exploring Structure-Activity Relationships In Molecular Catalysts For C-H Bond Oxidation And Co2 Reduction, Zane Turner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Value-added chemicals can be generated by the functionalization of hydrocarbon substrates by C-H bond oxidation and by the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2), where each of these processes require long-lived catalysts that are selective and efficient. Chemical feedstocks such as petroleum-derived hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide are inexpensive and readily accessible but are challenging to transform into more valuable compounds. The oxidative functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds is a difficult task because they are, in general, thermodynamically stable and kinetically inert. Bioinspired iron-oxo catalysts have shown great promise in this area, but often have limited activity, selectivity, and/or stability. In this …

Gold Nanomolecules: Nanomolecular Metallurgy, Crystal Structures, And Stability, Kalpani Eshangi Hirunika Wijesinghe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanomolecules are atomically monodisperse nano-particles having a precise number of gold atoms and thiolate ligands. The 1–3 nm size range exhibit size-dependent molecule-like properties and have gained broad interest due to their applications in imaging, catalytic activity, biosensing, and drug delivery. The capping ligand governs the physio-chemical properties of an AuNM. Based on the C-S bonding, there are three groups of thiols. Aliphatic thiol, such as phenyl ethane thiol, has a sulfur atom directly bonded to an aliphatic group. 4-tert-Butylbenzene thiol is an aromatic ligand as the sulfur atom is directly bonded to an aromatic carbon. The next group …

Honors Theses
Protein design is a complex biomolecular and computational problem. Working on increasingly large protein folding problems requires an improvement in current analysis methods available. This work first discusses various methods of protein design, including de novo protein design, which is the primary focus of this thesis. Then, a new approach utilizing a B+ tree to effectively store and query a graph of keys and vertices is proposed in order to store the number of times two polypeptides are considered to be similar. This approach is found to have a reduction in time complexity from current mapping methods and thus provides …

Drought negatively affects crop growth and development, so it is crucial to develop practical ways to reduce these consequences of water scarcity. The effect of the interactive potential of compost (Comp), mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and carbon nanoparticles (CNPS) on plant growth, photosynthesis rate, primary metabolism, and secondary metabolism was studied as a novel approach to mitigating drought stress in maize plants. Drought stress significantly reduced maize growth and photosynthesis and altered metabolism. Here, the combined treatments Com-AMF or Com-AMF-CNPs mitigated drought-induced reductions in fresh and dry weights. The treatments with AMF or CNPS significantly increased photosynthesis (by 10%) in comparison …

N-Glycosylation is a common post-translational modification, and the number of GlcNAc branches in N-glycans impacts glycoprotein functions. N-Acetylglucosaminyltransferase-IVa (GnT-IVa, also designated as MGAT4A) forms a β1-4 GlcNAc branch on the α1-3 mannose arm in N-glycans. Downregulation or loss of GnT-IVa causes diabetic phenotypes by dysregulating glucose transporter-2 in pancreatic β-cells. Despite the physiological importance of GnT-IVa, its structure and catalytic mechanism are poorly understood. Here, we identify the lectin domain in mouse GnT-IVa’s C-terminal region. The crystal structure of the lectin domain shows structural similarity to a bacterial GlcNAc-binding lectin. Comprehensive glycan binding assay using 157 glycans and solution NMR …

High resolution hydroxyl radical protein footprinting (HR-HRPF) is a mass spectrometry-based method that measures the solvent exposure of multiple amino acids in a single experiment, offering constraints for experimentally informed computational modeling. HR-HRPF-based modeling has previously been used to accurately model the structure of proteins of known structure, but the technique has never been used to determine the structure of a protein of unknown structure. Here, we present the use of HR-HRPF-based modeling to determine the structure of the Ig-like domain of NRG1, a protein with no close homolog of known structure. Independent determination of the protein structure by both …

C-type inactivation is of great physiological importance in voltage-activated K+ channels (Kv), but its structural basis remains unresolved. Knowledge about C-type inactivation has been largely deduced from the bacterial K+ channel KcsA, whose selectivity filter constricts under inactivating conditions. However, the filter is highly sensitive to its molecular environment, which is different in Kv channels than in KcsA. In particular, a glutamic acid residue at position 71 along the pore helix in KcsA is substituted by a valine conserved in most Kv channels, suggesting that this side chain is a molecular determinant of function. Here, a combination of X-ray crystallography, …

The genetic prehistory of human populations in Central America is largely unexplored leaving an important gap in our knowledge of the global expansion of humans. We report genome-wide ancient DNA data for a transect of twenty individuals from two Belize rock-shelters dating between 9,600-3,700 calibrated radiocarbon years before present (cal. BP). The oldest individuals (9,600-7,300 cal. BP) descend from an Early Holocene Native American lineage with only distant relatedness to present-day Mesoamericans, including Mayan-speaking populations. After ~5,600 cal. BP a previously unknown human dispersal from the south made a major demographic impact on the region, contributing more than 50% of …
