Perceptions of beauty and health are embedded within everyday actions, even a simple smile. How do dental modification practices among the Classic Maya from Ambergris Caye, Belize relate to these perceptions and a person’s identity and status? This thesis analyzes the practice of notching, filing, and placing inlays in maxillary incisors and canines through a qualitative analysis of Classic period AD 250-1000 Maya teeth from the sites of San Juan and Chac Balam. Mental health is a contemporary issue of key concern among academics and policymakers, especially due to the exacerbation of mental health issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Increases in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicide, opioid overdose, and youth depression are the subject of research and governmental-allocated grant funding and new policies have been put in place at multiple institutional levels. Embodiment And Meaning: Muay Thai In Different Cultural Contexts, Dana B. Dawson

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

This qualitative meta-analysis, drawing from published articles, books, and ethnographies, examines Muay Thai through the interdisciplinary lens of martial arts studies, cultural studies, and anthropological literature. I argue that the interpretation of Muay Thai is intricately tied to its cultural context, revealing dimensions such as cultural heritage, systemic violence, and the global dissemination of martial arts. Framed within anthropological literature on embodiment and cultural performance, the paper understands Muay Thai, akin to dance, as an embodied cultural performance shaped by bodily knowledge and practice. The Club Andino Bariloche (CAB) is an Argentine mountaineering and winter sports club that was established in San Carlos de Bariloche in 1931. This paper provides a historical assessment of gender dynamics and mountaineering subjectivities in the CAB’s digital archive from 1931 to 2011. Specifically, I examine the CAB’s gendered ideologies of mountaineering as pertaining to: 1) the Andean landscape; 2) masculine protagonism; 3) feminine (in)action; and 4) transitional feminism in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. I argue that a history of feminine marginalization marks much of the CAB expeditionary record, drawing attention to the gendered ideologies of …

This scoping review aims to explore the gender-specific disparities and highlight the unique disadvantages faced by women in the context of Tuberculosis (TB). By mapping the existing literature on women's experiences with TB, this review seeks to uncover the underlying factors contributing to these disparities and identify gaps in the current understanding. The goal is to inform future research and policymaking, ultimately improving TB prevention, treatment, and outcomes for women worldwide. Recognizing and addressing the specific needs and challenges of women is essential for achieving equitable and effective TB control.

Make It Funny! Developing A Novel Humor-Based Digital Positive Psychology Intervention To Investigate The Influence Of Duchenne Laughter And Mirth On Psychological Distress In Daily Life, Joshua Semko

The aim of the present research was to develop a novel digital humor-based PPI (Make it Funny!) to investigate the influence of Duchenne laughter and mirth on psychological distress in daily life. Participants (N = 159; Age_­median­ = 39 years; 47.77% biologically female; 68.15% White) were tasked with completing Make it Funny! or a placebo activity every day for 7 days. Duchenne laughter frequency had a small negative cross-sectional moderation effect on the relationship between the occurrence of stressful events psychological distress (t(79.71) = -2.33, b = -10.89, p = .022). Health disparities, “preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health,” are infamous for their effects within both general healthcare and occupational therapy settings (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2008). Though existing literature establishes a need for the widespread adoption of anti-discrimination measures, specific recommendations for occupational therapy schools remain limited. Identifying predictors of personal growth–defined as striving to fulfill one’s unique potential–may be important for achieving a life of flourishing (Ryff & Singer, 2008). While existing research demonstrates the link between self-esteem and personal growth, gaps remain in our knowledge of the relationship between other potential self-referential predictors and personal growth (Paradise & Kernis, 2002). This study examines how Food Rx programs impact the children of enrolled families. Currently, research in this area is limited to data that focuses on produce consumption rates and BMI; however, there are other measures of physical and mental well-being that require evaluation. Consequently, this paper takes a more comprehensive approach, looking into childrens’ sense of security and perception of healthy food. 10 parents (representing 23 children) were interviewed and participated in recorded focus groups in order to gather information. From here, their responses were organized into domains in order to categorize the data.

The objectives of this study were to determine the sex-dependent contributions to developmental and behavioral effects of preconceptional exposure to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). BaP is implicated in numerous adverse outcomes in offspring of exposed parents, but the molecular mechanisms for the developmental and multigenerational effects associated with BaP exposures have yet to be fully elucidated. To assess the role of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr), a waterborne exposure of the offspring of ahr heterozygous (ahr^+/-) parents was conducted. At 120 hpf, BaP treated fish moved significantly less in the dark phase regardless of genotype. At 3 wpf, there …
