Comparative Study Of Agrogeophysical Methods For Identifying Soil Pipes, Md Abdus Abdus Samad
Comparative Study Of Agrogeophysical Methods For Identifying Soil Pipes, Md Abdus Abdus Samad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil erosion is considered the greatest challenge for soil management and agri-food production threatening human habitat and livelihood. Although soil erosion due to surficial processes has been well studied, the role of the subsurface process such as internal soil pipes has often been overlooked. Internal soil pipes directly contribute to total soil loss in agricultural fields that severely threaten agricultural sustainability. Locating, measuring, and mapping internal soil pipes and their networks are vital to assess the total soil loss in agricultural fields. Internal soil pipes are not commonly visible at the surface, and their subsurface networks rarely follow the surface …
Describing The Gut Microbiome Of Amblema Plicata, Lauren Lawson
Describing The Gut Microbiome Of Amblema Plicata, Lauren Lawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater mussels are important for nutrient cycling and ecosystem health, as they filter feed on their surrounding water column. This form of feeding makes these bivalves especially sensitive to conditions in their environment. Gut microbial communities (microbiomes) have been recognized as important to both host organism and ecosystem health; however, how microbiomes are organized and influenced is still unclear. In this study, the gut microbiomes of 58 individuals of the freshwater mussel Amblema plicata were compared across two river basins, five rivers, and nine sites in the southeastern USA. Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria were the most common phyla within all …
The Efficacy Of Neurofeedback In The Treatment Of Individuals With Anxiety-Spectrum Disorders: A Meta-Analysis, Gordon Michael Russo
The Efficacy Of Neurofeedback In The Treatment Of Individuals With Anxiety-Spectrum Disorders: A Meta-Analysis, Gordon Michael Russo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A number of authors have published articles that assert the efficacy of neurofeedback (NFB) in the treatment of people with anxious symptomatology. Despite this, many insurance companies identify NFB as experimental, which prohibits individuals from utilizing benefits to obtain this therapeutic treatment. In order to examine these discrepancies, the present meta-analyses were conducted and guided by research questions designed to examine the overall effectiveness of NFB, the impact of participant characteristics, and identify the if there is a significant difference in anxiety-spectrum outcomes. Twenty-six trials were divided based on design (14 single group [SG]; 12 between group [BG]) and analyzed …

Enzyme-Initiated Admicellar Polymerization, Elaheh Shakeri
Enzyme-Initiated Admicellar Polymerization, Elaheh Shakeri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Admicellar polymerization was developed in the 1980s as an economical method for modifying various surfaces. In admicellar polymerization, a low monomer to initiator (M/I) ratio was traditionally required to overcome this limitation and achieve high polymer conversion when oxygen was present in the headspace and dissolved in the reaction medium. To develop an environmentally friendly, cost-efficient, and feasible deoxygenation and initiation technique, we studied the use of glucose oxidase (GOx) in admicellar polymerization. In this method, GOx acts as the catalyst in the oxidation of ?-D-glucose, while consuming oxygen and generating hydrogen peroxide and D-glucono-?-lactone. There are many advantages of …

Effect Of Chronic Pain On Prospective Memory Performance, Alexander Joseph Kuka
Effect Of Chronic Pain On Prospective Memory Performance, Alexander Joseph Kuka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic pain is among the most widespread and disabling conditions worldwide. In the United States, approximately 50 million people suffer from chronic pain, and nearly half that number experience daily chronic pain. Diagnostic testing, treatments, and operations related to chronic pain cost Americans over $600 billion annually. Prospective memory, the process by which people remember to perform an action in the future after a delay, appears to be affected by the experience of pain, especially when a prospective memory task is more cognitively demanding. While self-report studies of individuals with chronic pain suggest that pain adversely affects both their retrospective …

Nature's Converts: Reading The Land And Nature In The Early American Conversion Narrative, 1727-1831, Cullen Rex Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the connections between cultivating the land and cultivating the soul through select readings of early American conversion narratives composed between 1727-1831. Over a century after British Colonists colonized the shores of New England, members of the United Ministers of Boston championed the efforts of their descendants, who both cultivated the land and the Indigenous and new arrived souls emplaced within the North American landscape. As they told their readers in 1727, their dual cultivating efforts were worthy of universal adulation and imitation. And in 1836, the words of Reverend Nahum Gold echoed those of the United Ministers …
Topics On Applications Of Optimization Theories On Statistical Methodologies, Duc Anh Anh Doan
Topics On Applications Of Optimization Theories On Statistical Methodologies, Duc Anh Anh Doan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, We show the results of our researches in statistical sampling, functional optimization, and methodology for partially observed Markov process (POMP) models. In statistical sampling, we introduce a p-generalized smoothing method that enables the Langevin-Monte Carlo method to generate a sample from a log concave distribution weakly smoothing potential function. For our optimization research, we introduce an accelerated inexact gradient (AIG) method. Combining the strengths while mitigating the weakness of its parent methods: gradient descent and Nesterov's accelerated gradient, AIG converges with excellent rates for both convex and non-convex optimization problems for smooth objective functions. Furthermore, we also …

Microbial Community Responses To Salinification: Applications In Climate Change And Extreme Environments, Eric Weingarten
Microbial Community Responses To Salinification: Applications In Climate Change And Extreme Environments, Eric Weingarten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sediment microbial community responses to elevated salinity are important in predicting the effects of sea level rise as well as in understanding those communities that can thrive in extreme environments. In this dissertation, I use natural and field experiments to investigate how salinity influences microbiome structure in coastal wetlands. Through the use of amplicon sequencing, I demonstrate that there are compositional differences between the microbiota of four wetland salinity classes: limnetic, oligohaline, mesohaline, and polyhaline. These results were reciprocated in a microcosm study exposing freshwater sediment to meso- and polyhaline conditions, showing that communities shifted proportionally to the magnitude of …
Epigenetic Regulation In Brevundimonas Subvibrioides And Comparison With The Caulobacter Crescentus Model, Satish Adhikari
Epigenetic Regulation In Brevundimonas Subvibrioides And Comparison With The Caulobacter Crescentus Model, Satish Adhikari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Epigenetics is a form of DNA methylation-based gene regulation. The CcrM methyltransferase and transcriptional regulator GcrA, constitute an epigenetic regulatory system well-conserved throughout the Alphaproteobacteria. The regulatory targets of GcrA and CcrM were identified in the Alphaproteobacterium Brevundimonas subvibrioides, and then compared to those of its close relative Caulobacter crescentus. Both these bacteria belong to the same family and inhabit the same environment. Although the regulators themselves are highly conserved, the genes they regulate are vastly different. GcrA directly regulates 204 genes in C. crescentus, and though B. subvibrioides has orthologs to 147 of those genes, only 48 genes retained …
The Perceptions That Um First-Generation College Students Have Regarding The Impact Of Campus Engagement On Their Success At The Institution, Martin B. Fisher
The Perceptions That Um First-Generation College Students Have Regarding The Impact Of Campus Engagement On Their Success At The Institution, Martin B. Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
First-generation students are often underprepared for college and have lower persistence rates (Balemian & Feng, 2013), and they face a unique set of challenges in their transition to college that many of their peers do not (Pelco, Bell, & Lockeman, 2014). Consistent with national statistics, data obtained from UM’s Office of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Planning indicate first-generation students at UM persist and graduate at lower rates than their peers whose parents have a bachelor’s degree.
There are many reasons why first-generation students have lower success rates, and, for some students, a lack of engagement is one of them (Pascarella, …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Ocular Inserts By Hot Melt Extrusion And 3d Printing, Meghana Mokashi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hot melt extrusion (HME) has emerged as a viable approach for a wide range of pharmaceutical applications over the last few decades. The HME method is more efficient than other traditional technologies due to its high throughput, low residence time, lack of organic solvents, and a combination of intensive mixing and controlled temperature. Because of the ability to construct complex and personalized dosage forms depending on the requirements of the patient, three-dimensional printing (3DP) is an emerging approach in the fabrication of pharmaceutical dosage forms. The objective of the current study is to fabricate Lidocaine HCl ocular inserts by HME …
A Numerical Study Of The Effects Of Time-Varying Streambed Conductivity On Groundwater – Surface Water Interactions During Storm Events, Jiayu Fang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Streambed conductivity is widely recognized as a vital parameter controlling the stream-aquifer exchange. Many field measurements have revealed that temporal variation of streambed conductivity is rapid and dramatic during floods. However, previous numerical studies either assumed streambed conductivity as steady over storm events or focused on time-varying streambed conductivity during low-stage periods. This study aims at bridging this gap by both incorporating time-varying streambed conductivity into a numerical model of groundwater (GW) – surface water (SW) interactions and simulating them under different flooding conditions, making this dissertation the first modeling study to explore combined effects of high-stage events and time-varying …

Copper is one of the most abundant and less toxic metal on earth. In nature, a variety of proteins have copper in their active site structure. Copper bound to amyloid proteins are implicated to play pathophysiological roles in neurodegenerative diseases. On the other hand, copper containing metalloenzymes in Nature catalyze important biochemical reactions. Cu containing metalloenzymes play a significant role in a variety of functions viz. electron transfer, oxygen reduction, oxygen transport, and substrate oxidation owing to the readily available redox states of Cu+/Cu2+. While Cu bound to amyloid proteins that are often referred as intrinsically disordered or misfolded proteins …
Acoustic Bessel And Vortex Beams: Forces And Refraction, Xudong Fan
Acoustic Bessel And Vortex Beams: Forces And Refraction, Xudong Fan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Non-contact manipulation techniques or tweezers devices are invaluable for applications in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. Acoustic tweezers using either standing waves or focused beams have been investigated for more than a few decades with advantages of label-free operation, noninvasiveness, and biocompatibility when compared with the optical, magnetic, and electrical counterparts. Here, a new type of acoustic tweezers (i.e. acoustic tractors) is studied using acoustic Bessel and vortex beams that are able to pull objects against the beam's propagation over centimeter ranges. Stable acoustic tractors require transversely stable trapping in addition to axially negative pulling. Hence, the transverse forces acting …

Applications Of Fluoronitroalkenes In 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition And 1,4-Conjugate Addition, Hamdan Eid Alrefaei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fluorinated compounds have been routinely synthesized in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Approximately, 45% of drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2018−2019, and 52% of agricultural products between 2010 and 2017 were fluorinated compounds. In comparison to their non-fluorinated counterparts, fluorinated drugs have different pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics profiles. Bond strength and electronegativity of the fluorine atom can affect the compound's pKa, dipole moment, and metabolic stability. Therefore, methods to access fluorinated compounds are highly pursued in organic synthesis. Various fluorinating agents (nucleophilic and electrophilic) have been developed over the last few decades and are widely employed …

Breathable air, water, food, shelter, sleep: these are the five basic requirements for human survival. Providing these basics to a single person living on Earth is a challenge; providing them to 1,200 people living in the harsh Martian environment is a different matter entirely. Nonetheless, in 2047, SpaceX successfully constructed Valinor—the first human inhabited scientific settlement on Mars—by transporting hundreds of scientists and engineers, along with countless scientific experiments and technologically advanced survival equipment, to the red planet. Each year saw more successful missions to Valinor and the world community grew more excited about the reali-zation of humanity’s expansion into …
Elementary School Counselors' Experiences Working With Children Who Self-Harm, Maegan Tatum
Elementary School Counselors' Experiences Working With Children Who Self-Harm, Maegan Tatum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Elementary-aged children struggle with low self-esteem, are often impulsive, and struggle to develop appropriate coping skills. As such, many children have begun to experiment with self-harm. Because children spend a great deal of time in school, school counselors are often the first to know that a student has self-harmed. Although school counselors have extensive experience working with students who self-harm, most school counselors indicate a need for more training and implementation of school district policies regarding self-harm. Additionally, current literature focuses on the experiences of middle and high school counselors because self-harm and NSSI are primarily noted in adolescents. In …
