Objective. We evaluated the specific association between muscle-strengthening activity (MSA) and accelerometer-assessed physical activity on systemic inflammation among retinopathy patients in the United States. Methods. Data from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used to identify 157 retinopathy patients between 40 and 85 years of age with complete data on select study variables. MSA was assessed via self-report. Participation in moderate-tovigorous physical activity (MVPA) was determined from objective accelerometer data. Systemic inflammation was assessed using C-reactive protein (CRP), which was quantified using latex-enhanced nephelometry. Nonproliferative retinopathy was determined using Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grading criteria, …

Food Insecurity And Child And Parent/Caretaker Overweight/Obesity In A Rural, Appalachian Mississippi Community, Sydney Antolini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the differences in parent/caretaker body mass index (BMI) and parent/caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity by food security status in a rural, Appalachian, Mississippi community, as well as the relationship of parent/caretaker BMI and parent/caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity to food security status. A cross-sectional survey of elementary school parents/caretakers recruited at three elementary schools in an economically-distressed Appalachian, Mississippi county was conducted. Parent/caretaker BMI was calculated from self-reported height and weight. Caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity was determined using caretaker report of a medical professional identifying child overweight/obesity within the past year. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS (version 23, 2015) to assess …

Effects Of Predation On The Biochemical Constituents Of The Bleached Soft Coral Sinularia Polydactyla, Carley Elizabeth Cole
Effects Of Predation On The Biochemical Constituents Of The Bleached Soft Coral Sinularia Polydactyla, Carley Elizabeth Cole
Honors Theses
Climate change can indirectly affect the level of predation on soft corals. As sea temperatures rise, more and more bleaching events are occurring, which can affect the production of chemical defenses and the concentrations of the biochemical constituents that make up the soft corals. These changes may make the soft corals more attractive to predators. This phenomenon is suggested by the environmental stress theory (EST), which states that under stressful conditions, more of an organism's energy is allocated to survival rather than to other factors, such as reproduction or predator deterrence. To test the effect of predation on already bleached …

¡El Nuevo Chile Papi!: An Examination Of The Influence Of Public Opinion On The Development Of Chilean Immigration Policies, Nicholas Senften
Honors Theses
This study sought to determine whether public opinion in Chile had influenced the development of national immigration policies in the contemporary period. It used a comparative historical approach with a timeframe from 1989 to 2015. Because of the study's cause-and-effect element, public opinion served as the independent variable and immigration policy served as the dependent policy. The study measured public opinion through the usage of public opinion surveys previously conducted by the research institutes of The World Value Survey and Latinobarómetro Corporation. The study also synthesized written immigration policy and incorporated visa data from approved visa applications from the years …
Effects Of Housing Management On Vaccination Success Against Eimeria Infection In Chickens, Louis Wilson Benton
Effects Of Housing Management On Vaccination Success Against Eimeria Infection In Chickens, Louis Wilson Benton
Honors Theses
Coccidiosis is a disease of the gastrointestinal system of commercially raised chickens (Gallus gallus). The infection is caused by multiple parasitic species of the coccidian genus Eimeria. Eimeria proliferate within large poultry houses leading to decreased nutrient absorption, anorexia, and death of the host. Scheduled vaccination with live coccidian oocysts should minimize production losses, but various management factors may contribute to variation in the outcome. I investigated whether by tracking infection cycles in detail it might be possible to improve poultry production. Feces were collected daily from four farms across a two-month period to understand how peaks in oocyst shedding …

Healthcare Certificates Of Need In Mississippi: Policy Review And Recommendation, Seth Dickinson
Honors Theses
Healthcare Certificates of Need, often abbreviated as CON, are public policies implemented across America with many intentions but the primary purpose of engaging the healthcare marketplace in a way that allows for government regulation and monitoring. Over time, states have created their own types of certificate of need policies while others have abandoned these types of policies all together. Mississippi is a member of the former group that has crafted its own type of policies geared towards enabling Certificates of Need. As the healthcare marketplace shifts across America, this research delves into the certificate of need policies of states with …
Effects Of Point Of Purchase Marketing On Selection Of Vegetables In A University Greek House Foodservice, Shelton Wittenberg
Effects Of Point Of Purchase Marketing On Selection Of Vegetables In A University Greek House Foodservice, Shelton Wittenberg
Honors Theses
Weight gain is common for undergraduate college students because of factors such as body maturation, increased consumption of fast food, and less physical activity. Weight gain may continue after college if diet and exercise habits do not improve, so learning healthy habits during college can contribute to a healthy adulthood. Recent research has reported that weight gain is inversely related to fruit and vegetable consumption. Because a large portion of college students' diets come from on-campus dining options, fruit and vegetable intake may be lacking because many of these venues may not serve these items or serve them in a …

Ict Use By Smallholder Farmers In Rural Mozambique: A Case Study Of Two Villages In Central Mozambique, Kathlee Freeman, Fridah Mubichi
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study adds to the empirical evidence of information and communication technology (ICT) use by smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study draws on qualitative data collected from eight focus groups segmented by gender and consisting of adult farmers in two villages in central Mozambique. Special attention was given to the types of ICTs that farmers have access to and the dissemination of agriculture information through various ICTs. Findings indicate that the characteristics of ICTs explain why cell phone and radio use is prevalent, while access to television remains limited. The type of information accessed also varied by ICT type, …

Community, Regional Identity, And Civic Agriculture: A Structural Ritualization Analysis Of Rural Online Farmers' Market Sellers, Jason S. Ulsperger, Kristen Ulsperger
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Despite the impact of “new agriculture,” a revival of farmers’ markets (FMs) occurred in recent years. Though urban environments have FMs, people often neglect to consider their existence and functions in rural areas. Moreover, a lack of research specifically related to rural, online markets exists. This article is an analysis of rural, online farmers’ market sellers in the Arkansas River Valley. It provides a brief history of FMs and review of literature associated with food, identity, and community. It also uses structural ritualization theory to explore community bonds, regional identity, and civic agriculture themes. Results suggest that online sellers rarely …

Livestock-Livelihood Linkages In Uganda: The Benefits For Women And Rural Households?, Elizabeth Ransom, Carmen Bain, Iim Halimatusa'diyah
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Livestock are an important component of rural households and gendered livelihood practices throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Widespread within the development literature is the belief in the livestock ladder, with poorer households often owning small stock and wealthier households owning large stock, with the assumption that poor households can utilize livestock to build their asset base and over time this would allow poorer households to expand from small stock to large stock, and in so doing climb the livestock ladder. There is also an assumption in the literature that women are more likely to oversee small stock. In addition, some well-known agricultural …
