A Single Case Study Of A Three Year Coordinated School Health Program At A Rural North Mississippi Elementary School, Sandra Lena Howell
A Single Case Study Of A Three Year Coordinated School Health Program At A Rural North Mississippi Elementary School, Sandra Lena Howell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The single case study presents the story of the implementation of a three year Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) at a rural North Mississippi school. The school was recognized by the Mississippi Department of Education, Office of Healthy Schools, as one of ten selected model Mississippi healthy schools. An awarded grant of one hundred thousand dollars funded the implementation of the CSHP over a three year period. The study examined the impact of the CSHP on the students, staff, and personnel. Two types of data were collected and analyzed including archived documents and interviews conducted with five members of the …
Differences In Bone Mineral Density Among Adolescent Female Tennis Players And Non-Tennis Players, Kevser Ermin
Differences In Bone Mineral Density Among Adolescent Female Tennis Players And Non-Tennis Players, Kevser Ermin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis. Physical activity (PA) is an important step in preventing osteoporosis and is one of the major determinants of peak bone mass during adolescence. However, type of pa plays an important role when examining the effects of pa on bone mineral density (BMD). Purpose: 1) to determine the differences in BMD among adolescent female tennis players (TP) and non-tennis players (NTP); 2) to determine the differences in body composition (BC) between adolescent female TP and NTP; 3) to determine whether BC variables (weight, fat mass, and lean mass) were predictive of differences in BMD; and …

Determinants Of Bone Mineral Density In African-American And Caucasian College-Aged Women, Andrea K. Johnson
Determinants Of Bone Mineral Density In African-American And Caucasian College-Aged Women, Andrea K. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Osteoporosis is a serious health issue affecting 10 million Americans, with an additional 44 million being at risk. Due to the morbidity and mortality associated with fractures caused by osteoporosis, it is an important public health concern. Some researchers suggest that African-American women fracture at a lower rate when compared to Caucasians with the same bone mineral density (BMD). However, when African-American women do fracture, they have higher mortality and morbidity rates. Data regarding risk factors and prevalence of low BMD among African American and Caucasian college-aged women are limited. Purpose. The primary purpose of this research was to explain …
Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Of Elementary Students In Serve Only Service And Offer Versus Serve Service, Margaret Louise Harbison
Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Of Elementary Students In Serve Only Service And Offer Versus Serve Service, Margaret Louise Harbison
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significant difference in fiiiit and vegetable consumption among fourth and fifth grade elementary students who participate in the NSLP Serve Only service compared to the Offer Versus Serve (OVS) service. Methods Weighed and visual plate waste data were collected for five consecutive days at two elementary schools. School A used Serve Only service (students are served all five food components of the lunch meal) and school B used OVS service (students may select as few as three of the five food components of the lunch meal). Costs disposed …
The Effects Of The Beta1 Receptor Antagonist, Metoprolol, On Methamphetamine-Induced Changes In Body Temperature In Varying Ambient Temperatures, Ricki Lee Harrell
The Effects Of The Beta1 Receptor Antagonist, Metoprolol, On Methamphetamine-Induced Changes In Body Temperature In Varying Ambient Temperatures, Ricki Lee Harrell
Honors Theses
Methamphetamine (METH) induces hyperthermia or hypothermia depending on the ambient temperature. The β1 receptor is involved in body temperature control via brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis. Our objective was to determine the effect of selective β1 antagonist, metoprolol (METO), on METH-induced changes in body temperature in varying ambient conditions. Rats received pretreatment injections of saline, 5.0 mg/kg METO, 10.0 mg/kg METO, or 15.0 mg/kg METO 30 minutes prior to receiving cither saline or 5.0 mg/kg METH injection. Body temperature was measured telemetrically at either 18°C, 24°C, or 30°C ambient temperatures. 10.0 mg/kg METO attenuated METH-induced hyperthermia at 60 minutes in …
Investigating The Effects Of Antioxidant Vitamins On The Immunocompetence Of Domestic Turkeys (Meleagris Gallopavo) Infected With Coccidian Parasites, Joseph Griffin Orr
Investigating The Effects Of Antioxidant Vitamins On The Immunocompetence Of Domestic Turkeys (Meleagris Gallopavo) Infected With Coccidian Parasites, Joseph Griffin Orr
Honors Theses
Vitamins are organic compounds essential for healthy metabolism and growth. Additionally, some vitamins also function as antioxidants. In particular, the antioxidant vitamins A (p-carotene) and E (a-tocopherol) are known to enhance the immune response of many animals as well as humans. However, there is relatively little research linking these immune-enhancing effects to domestic turkeys facing parasitic infections, such as coccidiosis. Coccidiosis in birds is expensive to treat, costing the worldwide poultry industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Coccidia of the genus Eimeria are protozoans that parasitize poultry via the intestinal tract, causing deleterious effects to survival such as lesioning, …
Greater Frequency Of Sorority Meal Consumption Results In Higher Food Group Intake And Lower Body Mass Indices In Sorority Members, Blair Stevens Harris
Greater Frequency Of Sorority Meal Consumption Results In Higher Food Group Intake And Lower Body Mass Indices In Sorority Members, Blair Stevens Harris
Honors Theses
College women are at increased risk of developing poor eating habits and disorders due to a higher frequency of dieting and obesity; therefore, due to the large number of women who are active in college sororities, these subgroups warrant significant attention concerning their nutritional knowledge and behaviors. Research points to a need to study sorority women’s eating patterns and diets in relationship to MyPyramid national recommendations for daily food consumption. The purpose of this study was to determine sorority members' frequency of meal consumption versus meals offered at University of Mississippi sorority houses and to identify resulting health outcomes in …

The Relationship Between Young Women's Self-Perceived Body-Esteems And Calculated Body Compositions, Alyssa Kay Ashmore
The Relationship Between Young Women's Self-Perceived Body-Esteems And Calculated Body Compositions, Alyssa Kay Ashmore
Honors Theses
Beginning at an early age, girls realize self-conscious feelings after being confronted with the issue of accepting their changing bodies (Halpem, Udry, Campbell & Suchindran, 1999). In the university setting, young women’s self-perceptions of body- esteem are sensitive to outside influences and peers (Heinberg & Thompson, 1992; Giles, Helme & Krcmar, 2007, Shomaker & Furman, 2007). This study observes the relationship between calculated body compositions and self-perceived body-esteems among female students at the University of Mississippi. Eighty-five female students between the ages of 18 and 23 volunteered to participate in the study. A questionnaire assessed body-esteem levels of the participants …

Brazil serves as a potent example of a nation striving to meet the public healthcare needs of a complex and diverse society. To evaluate how a public hospital in Montes Claros, Brazil has attempted to reconcile HIV/AIDS outcome gaps, this study examined aspects of the demographic profi les of public health clients receiving HIV exams in the largest city in Northern Minas Gerais at two respective sites. Age, sex, and residential neighborhood for clients tested for HIV during an eight month period in 2007-2008 at HUCF and CTA were statistically compared. In comparison to CTA, the …
