Finding And Calculating L-Functions, David Farmer
Finding And Calculating L-Functions, David Farmer
Algebra/Number Theory Seminar
L-functions arise from many objects in number theory. I will give a gentle introduction to L-functions and discuss how to find and compute them.
Differentiating Polynomials, David Farmer
Differentiating Polynomials, David Farmer
Colloquium
Differentiating polynomials is easy when viewed in terms of the coefficients. But when viewed in terms of the zeros of the polynomial, differentiation is actually a subtle and poorly understood operation. The talk will describe some surprising facts and some unsolved problems.

Remainder Maps, Vlad Timofte
Remainder Maps, Vlad Timofte
Analysis Seminar
We study remainder maps R_f(z) = Σₖ₌₁^∞ f(z + k), associated to convergent series defined by complex rational maps f ∈ (X), with coefficients in an arbitrary subfield ⊂ ℂ. All such maps are meromorphic on ℂ, form a vector space over , and generate what we call the remainder field (R_F) of ground . For remainder maps, we prove a criterion of algebraic independence over (X), stated in terms of -linear combinations. It turns out that any R_f is either a member of (X) or is transcendental, and so the field extension (R_F)/(X) is purely transcendental. We show …
Asymptotics Of Polynomials Orthogonal Over The Complex Unit Disk With Respect To A Positive Polynomial Weight, Part Iii, Erwin Miña-Díaz
Asymptotics Of Polynomials Orthogonal Over The Complex Unit Disk With Respect To A Positive Polynomial Weight, Part Iii, Erwin Miña-Díaz
Analysis Seminar
Consider the sequence {ₙ()}ₙ₌₀ of polynomials of a complex variable , where ₙ() is of degree and has a positive leading coefficient. These polynomials are orthonormal over the unit disk = { : || < 1} with respect to a weight of the form |ℎ()|², where ℎ() is a polynomial without zeros in . That is, they satisfy ∫ ₙ()ₘ() |ℎ()|² dx dy = δₙ,ₘ. We establish the behavior of ₙ() as → ∞ at every point of the complex plane. We will also discuss the behavior these formulas impose on the zeros of the polynomials ₙ. A comparison with similar known results for polynomials orthogonal over the unit circle will be made, and future research problems/extensions will be discussed. Students are welcome.

Invariant Subspaces Of Finitely Strictly Singular Operators, Vladimir Troitsky
Invariant Subspaces Of Finitely Strictly Singular Operators, Vladimir Troitsky
Analysis Seminar
An operator between Banach spaces is said to be strictly singular if its restriction to any infinite-dimensional subspace is not an isomorphism. An operator satisfying a similar condition for finite-dimensional subspaces is called finitely strictly singular. These classes of operators are similar to compact operators. It has long been known that compact operators have invariant subspaces. However, until recently, the Invariant Subspace Problem remained open for (finitely) strictly singular operators. I will talk about some recent advances in this area. Students are welcome.

Integrating Genome-Wide Expression Information Into Genome Scans For Complex Traits, Paul Schliekelman
Integrating Genome-Wide Expression Information Into Genome Scans For Complex Traits, Paul Schliekelman
Probability & Statistics Seminar
One of the central goals of genetics is gene mapping: that is, determining which genes are responsible for variation in traits of interest such as diseases. Efforts at gene mapping have been hampered by low statistical power when there are many genes involved in determining the trait. In this talk, I will discuss two procedures that we have developed for integrating expression information into genome scans in order to increase power. In both approaches we use an EM algorithm with the expression data to estimate the parameters for unobserved controlling genotypes. In one approach we use the EM algorithm to …

Sprouse's What-You-May-Call-Its: Fundamental Insight Or Monumental Mistake?, Sudipta Basu, Gregory B. Waymire
Accounting Historians Journal
We critically evaluate Sprouse's 1966 Journal of Accountancy article, which prodded the FASB towards a balance-sheet approach. We highlight three errors in this article. First, Sprouse confuses necessary and sufficient conditions by arguing that good accounting systems must satisfy the balance-sheet equation. Second, Sprouse's insinuation that financial analysts rely on balance-sheet analysis is contradicted by contemporary and current security-analysis textbooks, analysts' written reports, and interviews with analysts. Third, and most crucially, Sprouse does not recognize that the primary role of accounting systems is to help managers discover and exploit profitable exchange opportunities, without which firms cannot survive.
Ray Chambers And Ernest Weinwurm - Scholars In Unison On Measurement In Accounting, Graeme Dean, Frank L. Clarke
Ray Chambers And Ernest Weinwurm - Scholars In Unison On Measurement In Accounting, Graeme Dean, Frank L. Clarke
Accounting Historians Journal
Drawing on new evidence (Napier, 2002), we examine how ideas on measurement in accounting developed in the 1950s and 1960s. We show that for the question of measurement to be addressed properly, there is a need to consider the function of accounting. The analysis of private correspondence between Professors Ray Chambers (Sydney University, Australia) and the U.S.'s Ernest Weinwurm (DePaul University, Chicago) reveals that those ideas were nurtured in a way not previously disclosed. We provide unequivocal insights into how the latter, a scholar relatively unknown in accounting, mentored the former through the maturation of Chambers' accounting measurement ideas following …
Market For Luca Pacioli's Summa De Arithmetica: Some Comments, Basil S. Yamey
Market For Luca Pacioli's Summa De Arithmetica: Some Comments, Basil S. Yamey
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper explains why Pacioli's exposition of double-entry bookkeeping, published in his Summa of 1494, was neither an effective reference text for merchants nor a satisfactory text for their sons. In doing so, the paper contradicts some of the points made in the interesting and wide-ranging article by Sangster, Stoner, and McCarthy in the June 2008 issue of this journal.
