Tracing The Development Of Accounting Thought By Analyzing Content, Communication, And Quality Of Accounting Research Over Time, Frank A. Badua, Gary John Previts, Miklos A. Vasarhelyi

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper analyzes the longitudinal development of accounting thought by characterizing the content of accounting research over several decades (1963 to 2003). The paper also investigates the interaction among accounting scholars and examines the relationship of research quality, topical coverage, methodological tools, and citation behavior. Thus, this analysis describes how accounting research has evolved, both in its content and in the way it has been used and perceived by its adherent scholars.

In Defense Of Pacioli, Alan Sangster, Gregory N. Stoner, Patricia Mccarthy Jan 2011

In Defense Of Pacioli, Alan Sangster, Gregory N. Stoner, Patricia Mccarthy

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper responds to Basil Yamey's paper in the December 2010 issue of this journal. In that paper, Professor Yamey contradicts some of the points made in our 2008 paper, also in this journal, in which we conclude that Pacioli's Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalita (1494) was written primarily for merchants and their sons. He does so by attempting to explain why Pacioli's exposition of double-entry bookkeeping, De Computis et Scripturis, was neither an effective reference text for merchants nor a satisfactory school text for their sons. We are unconvinced by Professor Yamey's argument and counter it in …

Two-Currency, Nostro And Vostro Accounts: Historical Notes, 1400-1800, Basil S. Yamey Jan 2011

Two-Currency, Nostro And Vostro Accounts: Historical Notes, 1400-1800, Basil S. Yamey

Accounting Historians Journal

Suppose a merchant in country A has dealings with an agent in country B. The indebtedness between the merchant (principal) and his foreign correspondent (agent) has to be settled in terms of B's currency. Fluctuations in the exchange rate give rise to gains or losses, borne by the merchant. This paper discusses one accounting treatment (in the principal's ledger) of the dealings between domestic principal and foreign agent. It also considers the treatment where the merchant serves as agent for a foreign principal. The discussion is illustrated by references to two 15th century Italian ledgers and to passages in several …

Veblen's Placebo: Another Historical Perspective On Administrative Evil, Jesse F. Dillard, Linda V. Ruchala Jan 2011

Veblen's Placebo: Another Historical Perspective On Administrative Evil, Jesse F. Dillard, Linda V. Ruchala

Accounting Historians Journal

Thorstein Veblen was a turn of the 20th century American economist concerned with the implications of financial capitalists directing the means of production. Veblen proposed that the rationality of material science as practiced by the production engineers is fundamentally different from the rationality of market capitalism. If this claim is valid, our previous contentions regarding accounting, as a facilitating technology, for administrative evil warrant reconsideration. Veblen's position provides a historical perspective on one dimension of administrative evil that is generally unquestionably accepted, especially within accounting. That is, technology, such as accounting and the related information systems, is amoral, and it …

Too Young To Have A History? Using Data Analysis Techniques To Reveal Trends And Shifts In The Brief History Of Accounting Information Systems, Frank A. Badua, Ann L. Watkins Jan 2011

Too Young To Have A History? Using Data Analysis Techniques To Reveal Trends And Shifts In The Brief History Of Accounting Information Systems, Frank A. Badua, Ann L. Watkins

Accounting Historians Journal

Using several data-analysis techniques, this paper seeks to construct a brief history of Accounting Information Systems (AIS). In an effort to achieve some degree of comprehensiveness, this paper examines both AIS research and pedagogy. It begins by documenting and classifying topical foci of research papers in the Journal of Information Systems. It then compares the pedagogical emphases of AIS courses as identified in past research. By deploying multiple methods of analysis to identify patterns of hegemony or change in the topics of AIS scholarship and teaching, this paper highlights the use of two data-analysis techniques found to be useful in …

Dqtunepipe: A Set Of Python Tools For Ligo Detector Characterization, Brooke Anne Rankins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When LIGO's interferometers are in operation, many auxiliary data channels monitor and record the state of the instruments and surrounding environmental conditions. Analyzing these channels allows LIGO scientists to evaluate the quality of the data collected and veto data segments of poor quality. A set of scripts were built up in an ad hoc fashion, sometimes with limited documentation, to assist in this analysis. In this thesis, we present DQTunePipe , a set of Python modules to replace these scripts and aid in the detector characterization of the LIGO instruments. The use of Python makes the analysis method more compatible …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Agrofungicides Based On Naturally Occurring Pbdes, Robert Alexander Smith Jan 2011

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Agrofungicides Based On Naturally Occurring Pbdes, Robert Alexander Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyanobacterial symbionts of Indo Pacific marine sponges, e.g. Dysidea sp., produce hydroxylated (OH-) polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDBEs) which likely function as chemical deterrents owing to their antifungal and antibacterial properties. Limiting the therapeutic potential and agricultural use of these antimicrobial natural products are the negative connotations associated with non hydroxylated anthropogenic PBDEs. Anthropogenic PBDEs are pervasive global pollutants used as flame retardant additives in many household goods, e.g. furniture, textiles, and electronics. These molecules have a propensity to bioaccumulate in living organisms, they easily traverse the trophic food chains, they are readily passed from mother to offspring, and many of …

The Gay Of The Land: Queer Ecology And The Literature Of The 1960s, Jill Elizabeth Anderson Jan 2011

The Gay Of The Land: Queer Ecology And The Literature Of The 1960s, Jill Elizabeth Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I argue not only that queer ecology is a legitimate and important next step for ecocritics and queer theorists but also that its literary application does a great amount of good in exploring and dismantling the natural/unnatural binary and exposing the ecological impact of the choices humans make everyday. I take as my method a combination of queer and environmental theory and literary criticism, as well as the foundational queer ecocritical works and include important historical and political perspectives influencing the emergence of the environmental and gay and lesbian movements. Through this dissertation, I legitimize more recent …

Large Margin Random Forests On Mixed Type Data, Sheng Liu Jan 2011

Large Margin Random Forests On Mixed Type Data, Sheng Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Incorporating various sources of biological information is important for biological discovery. For example, genes have a multi-view representation. They can be represented by features such as sequence length and physical-chemical properties. They can also be represented by pairwise similarities, gene expression levels, and phylogenetics position. Hence, the types vary from numerical features to categorical features. An efficient way of learning from observations with a multi-view representation of mixed type of data is thus important. We propose a large margin random forests classification approach based on random forests proximity. Random forests accommodate mixed data types naturally. Large margin classifiers are obtained …

Dredging of the harbor at Stocking Island, Bahamas (23°31'45"N, 75°49'41"W) in 1942 produced four dredge piles of cross-bedded aragonite skeletal sand. The spoils piles are on the leeward (western) shore of the island, where they are subject to minimal wave energy. Collectively they are 350 x 50 m in plan view and 2 m high. The surface is very well cemented, which requires a hammer and chisel for sampling. Samples were collected from six sites at various locations of the dredge pile. Samples were analyzed for both chemical and physical properties using thin-section examination, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, bulk density …

The Impact Of Pre-K Programs On Student Achievement And Instructional Leadership In Rural Mississippi School Districts, Jeremy Eugene Stinson Jan 2011

The Impact Of Pre-K Programs On Student Achievement And Instructional Leadership In Rural Mississippi School Districts, Jeremy Eugene Stinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2011, Mississippi continues to be the only state in the southern region without a single state-funded pre-k program (NIEER, 2007), and all preschool funds in the state are currently allotted to Head Start. Witte and Trowbridge (2004) warned that the combination of pre-k programs could be the reason for highly fragmented systems of state funding, policies, and regulations. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate whether differences exist between preschool groups in three North Mississippi school districts and to determine the degree to which stakeholders in the programs practice instructional leadership. From a quantitative perspective, the …

Lt Code Equations, Stanley Truitt Jan 2011

Lt Code Equations, Stanley Truitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The LT Code equations describe the process of encoding input symbols into an error correcting code that requires no feedback from the receiver. The mathematical process involved the development of LT Codes is important. This thesis address the issue of improving the understanding of the LT Code equations presented in the original paper. This task is accomplished by inserting the mathematical details when possible, providing graphical results to the equations, and comparing the equations results against random computer generated simulations results. This thesis will improve the understanding of how LT Codes equations related to actual results.

Bipartite Density Of Generalized Petersen Graphs, Lisa Jordan Ewell Jan 2011

Bipartite Density Of Generalized Petersen Graphs, Lisa Jordan Ewell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The bipartite density b(G) of a graph G with m edges is the maximum ratio [special characters omitted] where m0 is the number of edges in a bipartitesubgraph of G. In this study we determine the bipartite density of several classes of Generalized Petersen Graphs. These graphs are denoted by P(n, k), where n ≥ 3 and 1 ≤ k < n with n ≠ 2k. The Generalized Petersen Graph P(n, k) has vertices [special characters omitted] and edges [special characters omitted] where subscript addition is modulo n. We define subgraphs P'(n, k) of P( n, k) by deleting the edge vn –1v0 and the edges w iwi+k for n – k ≤ i ≤ n – 1. For P'(n, k) and many classes of P(n, k), we determine the exact number of edges which must be removed from P( n, k) to reduce it to a bipartite subgraph. In many classes of Generalized Petersen Graphs the exact bipartite density is derived. For example: b(P(n, k)) = 1 for n even, k odd; b(P(n, k)) = 1 – [special characters omitted] for n and k odd and n > k²; b(P( n, k)) is asymptotically 1 – [special characters omitted] for n odd, k even.

A Gis Investigation Of Regional Geologic Controls On Mercury Deposits In The Southwest Region Of Arkansas, Lindsey Carol Langsdon Jan 2011

A Gis Investigation Of Regional Geologic Controls On Mercury Deposits In The Southwest Region Of Arkansas, Lindsey Carol Langsdon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mercury district of southwest Arkansas, located within Clark, Pike, and Howard counties, contains 77 mapped mercury deposits, primarily in the form of cinnabar, found within the sandstones and shales of the Stanley and Jackfork Formations. The geographic locations of the majority of the deposits tend to form an east-northeast alignment in map view. Utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools provided insight to the regional controls on the spatial distribution of the mercury deposits by examining the proposed relationships between mercury deposits and regional faults or changes in lithology, both of which have been suggested (Clardy and Bush, 1976) …
