© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Purpose: Previous research has evaluated the effects of acute hypoxia exposure on cognitive function, notably executive function. No studies, to date, have evaluated the effects of acute hypoxia exposure on memory interference, which was the purpose of this experiment. Methods: A within-subjects, counterbalanced experimental design was employed, with condition (hypoxia vs. normoxia) and time (immediate vs. delayed) being the independent variables. Participants (N = 21; Mage = 21.0 years) completed two laboratory visits, involving 30 min of exposure to either hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12) or normoxia (FIO2 = 0.21). Following this, …

Consider the problem of estimation of the parameters of a system that evolves with possibly long-range dependence. We have observations that are a realization of a stochastic process that exhibits some kind of dependence. We need to estimate in the simplest case the mean and construct some confidence intervals or test hypotheses. In many statistical problems of this kind, the sample mean has a distribution that is complex in general and might not satisfy the central limit theorem for any normalization, or has a complex limiting distribution. Several works have addressed this question over the years. The literature is abundant …

On Hermite-Padé Approximation, Apéry’S Theorem, And The Construction Of Infinitely Many Rational Approximants To Ζ(3), Jorge Arvesú Carballo
Analysis Seminar
First, a brief introduction along with a historical background will be presented. Then, a second-order holonomic difference equation is derived from a simultaneous rational approximation problem. Some orthogonal forms involved in this approximation problem are used to compute the Casorati determinants for its linearly independent solutions. These solutions constitute the numerator and denominator sequences of rational approximants to ζ(3). A correspondence from the set of parameters involved in the holonomic difference equation to the set of holonomic bi-sequences formed by these numerators and denominators appears. Infinitely many rational approximants can be generated.

Why Does Ramanujan, The Man Who Knew Infinity, Matter?, Ken Ono
Dalrymple Lecture Series
Dr. Ken Ono is the Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics at Emory University, and the vice president of the American Mathematical Society. He is an associate producer of the film The Man Who Knew Infinity starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons about Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-trained two-time college dropout who left behind three notebooks filled with equations that mathematicians are still trying to figure out today. Ramanujan claimed that his ideas came to him as visions from an Indian goddess. This lecture is about why Ramanujan matters. The answers …

G-quadruplexes (G4s) and i-motifs (iMs) are tetraplex DNA structures. Sequences capable of forming G4/iMs are abundant near the transcription start sites (TSS) of several genes. G4/iMs affect gene expression in vitro. Depending on the gene, the presence of G4/iMs can enhance or suppress expression, making it challenging to discern the underlying mechanism by which they operate. Factors affecting G4/iM structures can provide additional insight into their mechanism of regulation. One such factor is epigenetic modification. The 5-hydroxymethylated cytosines (5hmCs) are epigenetic modifications that occur abundantly in human embryonic stem cells (hESC). The 5hmCs, like G4/iMs, are known to participate in …

Algebra/Number Theory Seminar
This talk will consist of two seemingly unrelated topics in mathematics. A common theme in analysis, combinatorics, and number theory states that if A is a large subset of a certain group G, then the difference set A - A contains nice structures. For example, Steinhaus' theorem says that if A is a subset of positive Lebesgue measure of ℝ, then A - A contains an interval around 0. We are interested in this phenomenon in vector spaces over a finite field (ₚ). If A is a subset of positive density of ₚⁿ, then A - A must contain a …

Big data is becoming ubiquitous in the biological, engineering, geological and social sciences, as well as in government and public policy. Building an interpretable model is an effective way to extract information and to do prediction. However, this task becomes particularly challenging for the scenario of big data, which are large scale and ultra-high dimensional with mixed-type features. A common practice in tackling this challenge is to reduce the number of features under consideration via feature selection by choosing a subset of features that are “relevant" and useful. The work in this talk aims at proposing new dependence measure in …

© 2019 by the authors. Accurately measuring gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the atmosphere is important to understand its sources, cycling, distribution, and temporal trends. The MerPAS passive air sampler from Tekran Inc. (Toronto, ON, Canada) captures GEM on sulfur-impregnated activated carbon after it passes through a Radeillo diffusive barrier. Because they are small, relatively low in cost, and require no power, they can be deployed at multiple locations, yielding a much greater spatial resolution, albeit at coarser temporal resolution, compared to active sampling. In this study, we used the MerPAS to measure GEM concentration gradients at a mixed …

© 2019, The Author(s). We present the first model-independent measurement of the CKM unitarity triangle angle ϕ3 using B±→ D(KS0π+π−π0) K± decays, where D indicates either a D0 or D¯ 0 meson. Measurements of the strong-phase difference of the D →KS0π+π−π0 amplitude obtained from CLEO-c data are used as input. This analysis is based on the full Belle data set of 772 × 106BB¯ events collected at the Υ(4S) resonance. We obtain ϕ3 = (5.7−8.8+10.2±3.5±5.7)° and the suppressed amplitude ratio rB = 0.323±0.147±0.023±0.051. Here the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic, and the third is due …

Given a multigraph G = (VE), the edge-coloring problem (ECP) is to color the edges of G with the minimum number of colors so that no two adjacent edges have the same color. This problem can be naturally formulated as an integer program, and its linear programming relaxation is called the fractional edge-coloring problem (FECP). In the literature, the optimal value of ECP (resp. FECP) is called the chromatic index (resp. fractional chromatic index) of G, denoted by (G) (resp. (G)). Let (G) be the maximum degree of G and let (G) = max 2E(U) U 1 : U V …

© 2019 by the authors. Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant with human health and ecological impacts. Gas exchange between terrestrial surfaces and the atmosphere is an important route for Hg to enter and exit ecosystems. Here, we used a dynamic flux chamber to measure gaseous elemental Hg (GEM) exchange over different landscapes in Mississippi, including in situ measurements for a wetland (soil and water), forest floor, pond, mowed field and grass-covered lawn, as well as mesocosm experiments for three different agricultural soils. Fluxes were measured during both the summer and winter. Mean ambient levels of GEM ranged between 0.93-1.57 …

© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Mental imagery is used extensively in the sporting domain. It is used for performance-enhancement purposes, arousal regulation, affective and cognitive modification, and rehabilitation purposes. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate whether acute exercise and mental imagery of acute exercise have similar effects on cognitive performance, specifically memory function. A within-subject randomized controlled experiment was employed. Participants (N = 24; Mage = 21.5 years) completed two exercise-related visits (i.e., actual exercise and mental imagery of exercise), in a counterbalanced order. The acute-exercise session involved 10 min of intermittent sprints. The …

© 2019. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.. Methoxymethanol (CH3OCH2OH) was recently detected toward the MM1 core in the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I. However, the underlying formation mechanisms of this complex organic molecule (COM) as well as its structural isomers ethylene glycol (HOCH2CH2OH) and the hitherto unobserved dimethyl peroxide (CH3OOCH3) are still elusive. Here, we report the very first confirmed synthesis of dimethyl peroxide - at various deuteration levels within interstellar analogous ices of D3-methanol (CD3OH) exposed to ionizing radiation at ultralow temperatures of 5 K. The discrimination of specific isomers is achieved by exploiting reflectron time-of-flight mass …
