© 2019 by the American Society of Nephrology. Background and objectives Selected beverages, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, have been reported to influence kidney disease risk, although previous studies have been inconsistent. Further research is necessary to comprehensively evaluate all types of beverages in association with CKD risk to better inform dietary guidelines. Design, setting, participants, & measurements We conducted a prospective analysis in the Jackson Heart Study, a cohort of black men and women in Jackson, Mississippi. Beverage intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire administered at baseline (2000–2004). Incident CKD was defined as onset of eGFR<60 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 and ≥30% eGFR decline at follow-up (2009–13) relative to baseline among those with baseline eGFR ≥60 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 . Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between the consumption of each individual beverage, beverage patterns, and incident CKD. Beverage patterns were empirically derived using principal components analysis, in which components were created on the basis of the linear combinations of beverages consumed. Results Among 3003 participants, 185 (6%) developed incident CKD over a median follow-up of 8 years. At baseline, mean age was 54 (SD 12) years, 64% were women, and mean eGFR was 98 (SD 18) ml/min per 1.73 m 2 . After adjusting for total energy intake, age, sex, education, body mass index, smoking, physical activity, hypertension, diabetes, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, history of cardiovascular disease, and baseline eGFR, a principal components analysis–derived beverage pattern consisting of higher consumption of soda, sweetened fruit drinks, and water was associated with significantly greater odds of incident CKD (odds ratio tertile 3 versus 1 =1.61; 95% confidence interval, 1.07 to 2.41). Conclusions Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages was associated with an elevated risk of subsequent CKD in this community-based cohort of black Americans.

© 2019, The Author(s). As coral cover has declined on Caribbean reefs, space has become occupied by other benthic taxa, including sponges, which may affect the recruitment of new corals, thereby affecting the ability of reefs to recover to coral-dominated states. Sponges may inhibit coral recruitment by pre-empting potential recruitment space, overgrowing recruits, or through allelopathy. This study examined coral recruitment across six coral reef sites surrounding St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, and the impact of one species of sponge and the sponge community as a whole on coral recruitment. To test the effect of a single species of sponge …

This study is focused on the isolation and characterization of bioactive secondary metabolites from the ethanolic extract of stems of the Panamanian plant Talisia nervosa Radlk, through a series of target-based cellular assays related to the metabolic syndrome (MetS): A combination of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), hypercholesterolemia, inflammation, and obesity. Bioassay guided fractionation allowed the isolation of four known compounds: (-)-catechin (1), methyl gallate (2), ethyl gallate (3), and ß-D-glucopyranose,1,4,6-tris(3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate) (4). This is the first report of (-)-catechin (1) and ß-Dglucopyranose, 1,4,6-tris (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate) (4) from T. nervosa. Among the isolates, 1 …

Copyright © 2019 by The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Sigma-2 receptors, recently identified as TMEM97, have been implicated in cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Structurally distinct sigma-2 receptor ligands induce cell death in tumor cells, linking sigma-2 receptors to apoptotic pathways. Recently, we reported that sigma-2 receptors can also stimulate glycolytic hallmarks, effects consistent with a prosurvival function and upregulation in cancer cells. Both apoptotic and metabolically stimulative effects were observed with compounds related to the canonical sigma-2 antagonist SN79. Here we investigate a series of 6-substituted SN79 analogs to assess the structural determinants governing these divergent effects. …

© 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Aim: Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are unique communities that support a high proportion of depth-endemic species distinct from shallow-water coral reefs. However, there is currently little consensus on the boundaries between shallow and mesophotic coral reefs and between upper versus lower MCEs because studies of these communities are often site specific. Here, we examine the ecological evidence for community breaks, defined here as species loss, in fish and benthic taxa between shallow reefs and MCEs globally. Location: Global MCEs. Time period: 1973–2017. Major taxa studied: Macrophytes, Porifera, Scleractinia, Hydrozoa, Octocorallia, Antipatharia and teleost …

© The Author(s) 2019. Background. Obesity is a major medical issue nationally, with rates continually increasing. In obese patients, minimal data exist for appropriate dosing of acyclovir to decrease the rates of nephrotoxicity. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with acyclovir-induced nephrotoxicity. Methods. A retrospective case-control of patients who received intravenous acyclovir for >48 hours at University of Mississippi Medical Center over a 4-year period were evaluated to elucidate the prevalence of acyclovir-induced nephrotoxicity. Additionally, risk factors for the development of nephrotoxicity, including the effect of obesity and dosing strategy, were …

© 2019 Xide Ye et al. Gastrodia elata Blume belongs to the Orchidaceae family. G. elata is often processed when used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In the current study, a traditional processing method, known as "Jianchang Bang," was applied. Steamed and dried (S&D) G. elata was processed with ginger juice for up to 5 days (GEP5D). An UHPLC-MS/MS combined with a chemometric method was developed for the analysis of processed G. elata along with the raw material as well as steamed and dried G. elata. As a result, the primary marker compounds were identified with the aid of TOF-MS …
