Nebraska Residents’ Perceptions Of Drought Risk And Adaptive Capacity To Drought, Michelle L. Edwards
Nebraska Residents’ Perceptions Of Drought Risk And Adaptive Capacity To Drought, Michelle L. Edwards
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of drought in certain regions, including Nebraska. While differences in ecological and social vulnerability impact drought response, scholars argue that perceptions of risk and adaptive capacity also play a role in predicting adaptation responses. Drawing on Grothmann and Patt’s model of private proactive adaptation to climate change, based on protection motivation theory, I examine Nebraska residents’ perceptions of drought risk and adaptive capacity to drought at two spatial levels, the community and the region, as well as the predictors of these perceptions. Multivariate analyses demonstrate that rural residence positively predicts …
Marshallese Migrants And Poultry Processing, Jin Young Choi, Douglas H. Constance
Marshallese Migrants And Poultry Processing, Jin Young Choi, Douglas H. Constance
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This descriptive study investigates the work and health conditions of Marshallese poultry-plant workers in Northwest Arkansas, a global center of the poultry industry. Poultry processing is very dangerous work including numerous human rights and ethical concerns. Processing work has historically been carried out by marginalized workers, such as women, minorities, and immigrants. The Marshallese, one of the Pacific Islander groups, are the latest wave of migrants sourced as processing workers. A survey was conducted with a site-based, convenience sample of current and former Marshallese poultry-plant workers. The final analysis was based on a total of 198 questionnaires. The study showed …

Acute Exercise Intensity And Memory Function: Evaluation Of The Transient Hypofrontality Hypothesis, Paul D. Loprinzi, Sierra Day, Raymond Deming
Acute Exercise Intensity And Memory Function: Evaluation Of The Transient Hypofrontality Hypothesis, Paul D. Loprinzi, Sierra Day, Raymond Deming
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Background and Objective: The transient hypofrontality hypothesis predicts that memory function will be impaired during high-intensity exercise, as a result of a need for metabolic and cognitive resources to be allocated toward sustaining movement, as opposed to performing a cognitive task. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate this transient hypofrontality hypothesis. Materials and Methods: Experiment 1 involved participants (n = 24; Mage = 21.9 years) completing four counterbalanced visits. Two visits evaluated working memory function, either at rest or during a high-intensity bout of acute exercise. The other two …
Exercise And Episodic Specificity Induction On Episodic Memory Function, Paul D. Loprinzi, Kyle Mcraney, Kathryn De Luca, Aysheka Mcdonald
Exercise And Episodic Specificity Induction On Episodic Memory Function, Paul D. Loprinzi, Kyle Mcraney, Kathryn De Luca, Aysheka Mcdonald
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. T. Background and objectives: Episodic specific induction (ESI) is a manipulation shown to enhance episodic memory function. Episodic specificity induction involves thoroughly unpacking a recently encoded memory, with this enhanced retrieval-induced process helping to facilitate subsequent cognitions. In addition to ESI, emerging work suggests that acute exercise may also help to facilitate episodic memory function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential individual and combined effects of acute exercise and ESI on subsequent episodic memory performance. Materials and Methods: Participants (n = 120) were randomly assigned into one …

The nature of services for psychiatric disorders in public health systems has been understudied, particularly with regard to frequency, duration, and costs. The current study examines patterns of service reception and costs among Medicaid-covered youth newly diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or behavioral disturbance in a large data set of provider billing claims submitted between 2015–2016. Eligibility criteria included: 1) identification of …
High-Intensity Acute Exercise And Directed Forgetting On Memory Function, Mary Elizabeth Pace, Paul D. Loprinzi
High-Intensity Acute Exercise And Directed Forgetting On Memory Function, Mary Elizabeth Pace, Paul D. Loprinzi
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Background and Objectives: Despite accumulating research demonstrating that acute exercise may enhance memory function, very little research has evaluated whether acute exercise can effectuate intentional directed forgetting (DF), an adaptative strategy to facilitate subsequent memory performance. Materials and Methods: A three-arm parallel-group randomized controlled intervention was employed. Participants were randomized into one of three groups, including: (1) exercise plus DF (Ex + DF), (2) DF (directed forgetting) only (DF) and (3) R (remember) only (R). The acute bout of exercise included 15 min of high-intensity treadmill exercise. The memory assessment involved …

Memory-Related Encoding-Specificity Paradigm: Experimental Application To The Exercise Domain, Danielle Yanes, Emily Frith, Paul D. Loprinzi
Memory-Related Encoding-Specificity Paradigm: Experimental Application To The Exercise Domain, Danielle Yanes, Emily Frith, Paul D. Loprinzi

© 2019, PsychOpen. All rights reserved. The Encoding-Specificity Paradigm indicates that memory recall will be superior when contextual factors are congruent between memory encoding and memory retrieval. However, unlike other contextual conditions (e.g., verbal context, mental operations, global feature context, mood dependency, and physical operations), this paradigm has nearly been ignored in the exercise domain. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the Encoding-Specificity Paradigm in the context of exercise and rest conditions. 24 young adults (age: M = 21 years) completed a within-subject, counterbalanced experiment involving four laboratory visits, including 1) R-R (rest-rest) condition, 2) R-E (rest-exercise) …

Dear New and Returning Students in Southern Studies: Last week was a difficult one at the University of Mississippi. On Saturday, a male student allegedly took the life of a female student, and on Thursday images surfaced of three UM students, two of them armed, celebrating the desecration of a memorial to Emmett Till, whose murder we often understand as catalyzing the Civil Rights Movement. We are horrified by the violence of all of these acts.
