Southern Animals: Multispecies Encounters In Midcentury Southern Fiction, Kacee M. Mckinney
Southern Animals: Multispecies Encounters In Midcentury Southern Fiction, Kacee M. Mckinney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation expands our understanding of how nonhuman animal figures, symbols, and encounters within southern literature have had ideologically profound impacts on our conceptions of humanity, southernness, and relationality. This dissertation examines prose fiction, including short stories, novellas, and novels, from four influential southern writers—Richard Wright, Carson McCullers, Tennessee Williams, and Flannery O’Connor—who were all actively engaged with representing, critiquing, and expanding American conceptions of the south, the nation, and the ‘human’ at midcentury. With an understanding of southern literature as a rich site for not only regional representation but also broader disruptions of national injustices and ideologies of domination …
Mapping In/Exclusion: Queer Identity In Oxford, Mississippi, Julia Kraus
Mapping In/Exclusion: Queer Identity In Oxford, Mississippi, Julia Kraus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis employs a mixed methods approach to investigate LGBTQ communities in Oxford, Mississippi, within the unique context of the Bible Belt panopticon. Through an examination of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Oxford (UUCO) and Oxford Pride, the study delves into the themes of visibility and surveillance, resistance and subversion, community and identity, and institutional interactions and impacts. The research is grounded in seven original interviews with UUCO members, providing nuanced insights into the functioning of LGBTQ communities within a conservative environment. Additionally, the creation of a podcast episode titled “Queering Oxford: the Long Path to Pride” offers an innovative …
Montesquieu: The Nature Of L’Esprit Des Lois, Christian Jax Murray
Montesquieu: The Nature Of L’Esprit Des Lois, Christian Jax Murray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When Baron de Montesquieu received a copy of his L’Esprit des lois, he was horrified by the total removal and reorganization of critical parts of his text, changed ideas, and an abnormal amount of printing errors in his work. While he saw these issues hindering the reception of his work, this thesis argues that the chaos of the text, in both its style and publication, made the book more popular instead of hindering it. Montesquieu, his editor, and his publisher constructed a new kind of text that was broad in its subject matter and ambiguous in its meaning where its …
Applied Research For Improving The Behavior Intervention Process With The Help Of School Counselors, Teachers, And Administrators, Amberly T. Chapman
Applied Research For Improving The Behavior Intervention Process With The Help Of School Counselors, Teachers, And Administrators, Amberly T. Chapman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored how improvements to a district’s multi-tiered system of supports can improve the behavior interventions implemented for students needing behavioral support. Districts with poorly functioning intervention systems fail to provide students with the proper academic and behavioral support they need. School counselors are integral to the success of schools and districts and their participation in the MTSS process. This study examined the creation and implementation of behavior intervention and the additional support school counselors provide to students receiving the interventions. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study and the program was evaluated at the conclusion.
How French-Produced And North American-Produced French Textbooks Differ In The Teaching Of French And Francophone Culture, Elizabeth Clauss
How French-Produced And North American-Produced French Textbooks Differ In The Teaching Of French And Francophone Culture, Elizabeth Clauss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The teaching of culture is important in any foreign language classroom. This thesis will analyze what and how different aspects of French and Francophone culture are taught in elementary-level French textbooks: one French-produced and one North American-produced. The definition of culture is provided by several sources however one definition discusses the definition of culture in its entirety. A brief history, over the course of 60 years, of the teaching of French culture is discussed and analyzed in the first part of this thesis. The development of teaching French culture in the foreign language classroom is seen. Then, the teaching of …
Advancing College Access: A Correlational Inquiry On College Credit Attainment Among Low-Income High School Students, John Dixon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A college degree is vital for individuals to access lucrative, fulfilling careers. College access opportunities have existed for decades in K-12 education. In 2024, millions of high school students have access to advanced coursework, exposing them to college-level rigor with the potential to earn college credits (Jagesic et al., 2022). Students from historically marginalized communities do not participate in college courses in high schools at rates similar to White, affluent students. Furthermore, participation in these college opportunities does not always give students college credits. My quantitative, nonexperimental research study aimed to determine the extent of the relationship between the types …

Pedagogy In Times Of Crisis, James Daria, Abigail Wightman, Shelly Yankovskyy, Amanda J. Reinke
Southern Anthropologist
Editors’ note: With this issue, we launch a new feature of the journal, drawing from a panel discussion or roundtable at SAS, which sparked important discussion for panelists and conference participants. This panel, which took place on April 9, 2022, in Raleigh, NC, was part of the 55th Annual Meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society with the theme “Public Interest and Professional Anthropology in the South.” The roundtable was organized and moderated by Amanda J. Reinke. The transcript was created by Helen Regis and the conversation was lightly edited by the authors, who also had an opportunity to include references …
Doing Oral History As Public Anthropology, Helen A. Regis
Doing Oral History As Public Anthropology, Helen A. Regis
Southern Anthropologist
Doing Oral History engages students as co-researchers in a community-engaged oral history project begun in 2011. Supported by a research partnership between a faculty member, a university oral history center, and a non-profit archive, the course engages learners in the exploration of a festival and its communities. Through oral histories with long-time festival workers, artists, staff, volunteers, and neighbors, we contribute to expanding the history of a festival and the social movements that have shaped it. We also consider the ways in which diverse festival workers come to feel a part of a community centering African American working-class folk, cultures, …
Standing Together Against Silencing: Anthropology As Inclusive Public History In The Anti-Crt Legislative Era, Ann E. Kingsolver, Elena Sesma
Standing Together Against Silencing: Anthropology As Inclusive Public History In The Anti-Crt Legislative Era, Ann E. Kingsolver, Elena Sesma
Southern Anthropologist
The authors – a high school student, undergraduate and graduate students, and Anthropology Department faculty members at the University of Kentucky – discuss ways that existing ethnographic, archival, and archaeological data can be explored with new analytical lenses to contribute to public history centering voices and perspectives that have been silenced and marginalized in dominant historical narratives. This is argued to be a vital pedagogical project in secondary and postsecondary educational as well as inclusive community discussions, given the current legislative environment across a number of states in the southeastern US that discourages the teaching and even availability of texts …
Abolition 101: Anthropological Praxis And Education For Liberation, Daniel A. Pizarro
Abolition 101: Anthropological Praxis And Education For Liberation, Daniel A. Pizarro
Southern Anthropologist
Anthropological praxis has the potential to help build and sustain social justice movements by speaking truth to power, exposing structural violence, and questioning communities’ safety and well-being. Anthropologists who engage in praxis interrogate the root causes of oppression by critiquing the discipline’s pedagogies. The current structure of academic institutions encourages scholars to overlook the popular and political education necessary to ameliorate social suffering and advance human rights. This paper explores prison industrial complex (PIC) abolition, a liberatory praxis framework that socio-cultural anthropologists may adopt as active participants in the abolitionist struggle. This case study draws on community-based participatory action research …

Mercy Buckets: Country Music, Southern Fiction, And The Limits Of Rewriting The South, Andy Oler
Mercy Buckets: Country Music, Southern Fiction, And The Limits Of Rewriting The South, Andy Oler
Study the South
"During World War II, GIs began saying “mercy buckets” as an intentional, joking mispronunciation of the French “merci beaucoup.”1 In the 2011 song “Mercy Buckets,” the southern rock and alt-country band Drive-By Truckers rewrite the phrase’s origin by treating it as an idiom of the American South. As might be expected, however, DBT do not reinforce stereotypical notions of the ignorant southern redneck. Instead, songwriter and lead singer Patterson Hood takes the phrase seriously, explaining just what it would mean if bringing someone “buckets of mercy” were a recognized part of southern culture. . . . In this article, I …

Representing Rebels: The Semiotics Of Neo-Confederate Heritage In Transnational Digital Spaces, Maximilian Conrad
Representing Rebels: The Semiotics Of Neo-Confederate Heritage In Transnational Digital Spaces, Maximilian Conrad
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
This study examines the discursive profiles of two websites — the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Fraternity of American Descendants — in order to understand the transnational dimensions of neo-Confederate digital spaces. The Fraternity of American Descendants is a nonprofit organization that since 1954 has been based in the town of Santa Bárbara d’Oeste in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The organization works to maintain the historic patrimony of immigration associated with Confederados, American Southerners who fled the United States after the defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. In the United States, the Sons of …
