Geothermal Resource Assessment Of Mississippi, Adam Blake Goodwin Jan 2019

Geothermal Resource Assessment Of Mississippi, Adam Blake Goodwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geothermal energy is exploited through the process of using hot water or steam extracted from reservoirs of geothermal heat in Earth's crust which is derived from the upward convection and conduction of heat from Earth’s mantle and core. This energy can be harnessed to power geothermal heat pumps, heat water, or to generate electricity. Previous geothermal assessments of Mississippi have been locally focused, either in the southern Mississippi River flood plains or in eastern north central Mississippi at an active lignite coal mine. The focus of this project was to calculate and map heat flow estimates within the entire state …

Activist Modernisms: Human Rights And Anti-Totalitarianism In Mid-Twentieth Century Literature, Mary Ellen Gray Jan 2019

Activist Modernisms: Human Rights And Anti-Totalitarianism In Mid-Twentieth Century Literature, Mary Ellen Gray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The period after World War II saw the emergence of a new discourse of human rights, with the signing of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the postwar period and throughout the twentieth century, human rights would often be vieas a set of self-evident, monolithic, and timeless values that had merely reached their full realization after the horrors of the war. This study examines a body of literature from the 1930s and 40s, the wartime moment just before the foundation of the twentieth century universal rights ideology, to explore the process by which theories of human rights are …

Acoustic Radiation Force On A Fluid To Fluid Boundary By Phase Plate Focused Ultrasound, Robert Lee Lirette Jan 2019

Acoustic Radiation Force On A Fluid To Fluid Boundary By Phase Plate Focused Ultrasound, Robert Lee Lirette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the physics and applications of the ultrasonic radiation force at the interface between two immiscible fluids were investigated. These studies were performed using low-profile discrete-stepped lenses to the modify the phase of the incident radiation generating multiple field morphologies. In its first application to acoustics, a fraxicon lens was developed to approximate the field generated by an axicon. This type of lens creates a minimally diffractive Bessel beam and long depth of focus that is useful in ultrasonic imaging, therapy, and non-destructive evaluation techniques. Fields modified by fraxicon, Fresnel, and axicon lenses were characterized experimentally by scanning …

Whistle Before You Work: Defining Paid Labor In The New Deal State, 1938-1947, Thomas Porter Jan 2019

Whistle Before You Work: Defining Paid Labor In The New Deal State, 1938-1947, Thomas Porter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the conceptualization of work from the passage of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) through the Portal-To-Portal Pay Act of 1947. I argue that the FLSA created a new framework for industrial laborers to define what constituted work. This enables an understanding of work as defined by those in mines and on the industrial plants floor, allowing those who were closest to toil and exertion to create their own definitions. By 1946, Congress heeded to the complaints of the military and capitalists and codified their definition of work and the work week. This restricted the broadly …

Effect Of Solvent Interaction & Soluble Microneedles On Skin Permeability To Drug Molecules, Abhijeet Maurya Jan 2019

Effect Of Solvent Interaction & Soluble Microneedles On Skin Permeability To Drug Molecules, Abhijeet Maurya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Skin forms a formidable barrier protecting the human body from external environmental rigors and excessive loss of water; maintaining equilibrium. The barrier properties of the skin can be attributed to its unique macromolecular organization and morphology. As a route for drug administration, skin presents a large surface area and can be used for both systemic and localized targeted drug delivery applications offering several advantages over conventional drug therapy; avoidance of first pass metabolism, patient compliance, sustained or controlled delivery for an extended period, to name a few. However, the organized structure of the skin, since intended to prevent entry of …

A Numerical Study Of Granular Dam-Break Flows, Nuttita Pophet Jan 2019

A Numerical Study Of Granular Dam-Break Flows, Nuttita Pophet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Granular flows are mass movements of mixtures of solid particles and interstitial fluid. Examples include landslides, debris flows and tailings dam-break flows. These types of flows are often catastrophic events, and cover a wide range of phenomena of interest to both scientists and engineers. The mechanical properties of granular materials and the hydraulic behavior of the flows originate from solid and fluid phases, their distribution and interaction. Understanding the behavior of these types of flows and developing reliable predictive models are important.

Cramer Type Moderate Deviations For Random Fields And Mutual Information Estimation For Mixed-Pair Random Variables, Aleksandr Beknazaryan Jan 2019

Cramer Type Moderate Deviations For Random Fields And Mutual Information Estimation For Mixed-Pair Random Variables, Aleksandr Beknazaryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we first study Cramer type moderate deviation for partial sums of random fields by applying the conjugate method. In 1938 Cramer published his results on large deviations of sums of i.i.d. random variables after which a lot of research has been done on establishing Cramer type moderate and large deviation theorems for different types of random variables and for various statistics. In particular results have been obtained for independent non-identically distributed random variables for the sum of independent random to estimate the mutual information between two random variables. The estimates enjoy a central limit theorem under some …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Technology use has become commonplace in some mathematics classrooms, often being used for formative assessment. Research supports the use of technology to engage students, but not as much research exists to investigate the impact on student learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a statistical relationship exists between the post-lesson assessment results of students engaging in a formative assessment lesson where the teacher delivers the lesson with technology and students engaging in a formative assessment lesson where the teacher delivers the lesson without technology. The teachers administered pre- and post-lesson assessments to the students after the formative …

Dynamic Code Selection Method For Content Transfer In Deep Space Network, Rojina Adhikary Jan 2019

Dynamic Code Selection Method For Content Transfer In Deep Space Network, Rojina Adhikary

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Space communications feature large round-trip time delays (for example, between 6.5 and 44 minutes for Mars to Earth and return, depending on the actual distance between the two planets) and highly variable data error rates, for example, bit error rate (BER) of 10−5 is very comand even higher BERs on the order of 10−1 is observed in the deep- space environment. We develop a new content transfer protocol based on RaptorQ codes and turbo codes together with a real-time channel prediction model to maximize file transfer from space vehicles to the Earth stations. While turbo codes are used to correct …

Manifoldlike Causal Sets, Miremad Aghili Jan 2019

Manifoldlike Causal Sets, Miremad Aghili

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The content of this dissertation is written in a way to answer the important question of manifold likeness of causal sets. This problem has importance in the sense that in the continuum limit and in the case one finds a formalism for the sum over histories, the result requires to be embeddable in a manifold to be able to reproduce General Relativity. In what follows I will use the distribution of path length in a causal set to assign a measure for manifold likeness of causal sets to eliminate the dominance of nonmanifold like causal sets. The distribution of interval …

Effects Of Impoundments On The Community Assemblage And Gene Flow Of Stream Crayfishes, Zanethia Choice Barnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dams and their impoundments block movement of stream organism and change stream physiochemical properties, which subsequently changes biological assemblages and creates barriers to gene flow. While changes in species assemblages and gene flow have been assessed for numerous impoundments and stream organisms, no study has assessed the effects of large impoundments on crayfish assemblages and population genetic diversity and connectivity. I examined the physiochemical, biological, and genetic effects of impoundments on crayfishes. Between May 2015 and August 2017, I sampled multiple sites up- and downstream of three impounded streams, and along the lengths of two unimpounded streams, in the Bear …

Towards Misleading Connection Mining, Md Main Uddin Rony

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study introduces a new Natural Language Generation (NLG) task – Unit Claim Identification. The task aims to extract every piece of verifiable information from a headline. The Unit Claim identification has applications in other domains; such as fact-checking where the identification of each verifiable information from a check-worthy statement can lead to an effective fact-check. Moreover, the extracting of the unit claims from headlines can identify a misleading news article, by mapping evidence from contents. For addressing the unit claim identification problem, we outlined a set of guidelines for data annotation, arranged in-house training for the annotators and obtained …

ABSTRACT After the validation of our in silico models by using the previous knowledge in this area the alerting phytochemicals from two Glycyrrhiza species (G. glabra and G. uralensis) were clustered. Exhaustive computational mining of licorice metabolome against selected endocrinal and metabolic targets led to the discovery of a unique class of compounds which belong to the dihydrostilbenoids (DHS) class appended with prenyl groups at various positions. To the best of our knowledge this interesting group of compounds has not been studied for their estrogenic activities or PXR activation. In addition some of the bis-prenylated DHS have been reported to …

Probing Atypical Noncovalent Interactions Using Electronic Structure Theory, Katelyn Mae Dreux Jan 2019

Probing Atypical Noncovalent Interactions Using Electronic Structure Theory, Katelyn Mae Dreux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Some of the most important topics in modern chemistry involve noncovalent interactions in a variety of ways, from pharmacological processes to materials design. Due to the comparatively weak nature of these interactions, they can be difficult to investigate experimentally. Beyond what might be considered the ‘typical’ noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding or London dispersion, there are less well known noncovalent interactions such as coordinate covalent, dihydrogen, and nonconventional hydrogen bonding, which have been the focus of much of this research. Through the use of electronic structure theory, fundamental information about the structure, energetics, and molecular properties of noncovalently bound …

Use Of Seismic Refraction In Determining Rock Mass Anisotropy, Mohammad Najmush Sakib Oyan Jan 2019

Use Of Seismic Refraction In Determining Rock Mass Anisotropy, Mohammad Najmush Sakib Oyan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seismic refraction is a popular method used by geological/geotechnical engineers to understand subsurface conditions. This method along with information collected from borings produce a realistic image of the ground beneath us. The goal of this study is to define and test a set of procedures to use seismic refraction alone to create high quality images of subsurface conditions. The focus is on areas with several meters of soil overlain by bedrock. The application of these procedures will minimize construction costs by eliminating the need for multiple boreholes. The results show that two important criteria must be met for successful application …

Characterization Of Hydrogen Bonding, Halogen Bonding And Argyrophilic Interactions Using Computational Modeling, Sarah Nicole Arradondo Jan 2019

Characterization Of Hydrogen Bonding, Halogen Bonding And Argyrophilic Interactions Using Computational Modeling, Sarah Nicole Arradondo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non-covalent interactions govern multiple important chemical processes throughout nature from those within the human body to the complex environment of the atmosphere. Quantum mechanical electronic structure modeling of these relatively weak interactions can provide molecular level insight that can further our understanding of specific macroscopic properties. In the present work different non-covalent interactions are computationally evaluated within four systems. A small prototypical hydrogen bonded system and the various structural motifs that promoted proton transfer within concentrated acid and water clusters are characterized with sophisticated wavefunction based methods and large robust basis sets in order to accurately predict the structures energies …

Examining The Internal & External Factors That Motivate Inmates’ Participation Among Various Prison Programs, Kornicha Shaneice Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prison programming has been linked to reducing recidivism and re-incarceration, yet only a small percentage of prison programs are completed by inmates (Duwe, 2018). The demand in preparing inmates for reentry is crucial and ongoing. Studies have tried to understand the failure of prison program completion; however, research has not been aimed at specifically locating the internal and external factors that encourages this voluntary participation. This study examines internal and external motivation in order to find what factors influence inmates’ decision to pursue prison programs. This study contributes to link these factors to the programming types of religious, educational, treatment, …

The Evolution Of Coral Snake Mimicry, Renan Janke Bosque Jan 2019

The Evolution Of Coral Snake Mimicry, Renan Janke Bosque

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scientists have regarded mimicry as one of the most amazing examples of the power of natural selection. Early observations by naturalists of the mimetic association between venomous New World coral snakes of the genus Micrurus and harmless mimics has stimulated an intense debate about the causes and consequences of mimicry that persists today. Despite its medical, evolutionary and historical importance our understanding of evolution within the genus Micrurus is negligible. My dissertation explores the evolution of mimicry within South American coral snakes and their mimics using a multi-scale framework involving macroevolutionary (Chapter I), geographic/morphological concordance (Chapters II and III), behavioral …
