The Effects Of Human Visual Sensory Stimuli On N1b Amplitude: An Eeg Study, Damien Moore, Toshikazu Ikuta, Paul D. Loprinzi Sep 2020

The Effects Of Human Visual Sensory Stimuli On N1b Amplitude: An Eeg Study, Damien Moore, Toshikazu Ikuta, Paul D. Loprinzi

Faculty and Student Publications

Sensory systems are widely known to exhibit adaptive mechanisms. Vision is no exception to input dependent changes in its sensitivity. Recent animal work demonstrates enhanced connectivity between neurons in the visual cortex. The purpose of the present experiment was to evaluate a human model that noninvasively alters the amplitude of the N1b component in the visual cortex of humans by means of rapid visual stimulation. Nineteen participants (Mage = 24 years; 52.6% male) completed a rapid visual stimulation paradigm involving black and white reversal checkerboards presented bilaterally in the visual field. EEG data was collected during the visual stimulation paradigm, …

Adding Production To High Variability Phonetic Training, Caleb Crosby Aug 2020

Adding Production To High Variability Phonetic Training, Caleb Crosby

Honors Theses

The effectiveness of adding a production component to a High Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) regimen to improve native Japanese speaker’s pronunciation of English [b], [v], [f], and [h] was investigated. L1 Japanese-speaking English learners were recruited as participants, and a pretest-posttest procedure was used to evaluate improvement at production of the target consonants. For the pretest and posttest, recordings were taken of participants pronouncing twelve tokens, and the recordings were rated for intelligibility by a phonetically trained native English-speaking rater. Participants were divided into two groups. Group A received only HVPT training, and group B received a regimen of half …

Punishment Feedback Impairs Memory And Changes Cortical Feedback-Related Potentials During Motor Learning, Christopher M. Hill, Mason Stringer, Dwight E. Waddell, Alberto Del Arco Aug 2020

Punishment Feedback Impairs Memory And Changes Cortical Feedback-Related Potentials During Motor Learning, Christopher M. Hill, Mason Stringer, Dwight E. Waddell, Alberto Del Arco

Faculty and Student Publications

© Copyright © 2020 Hill, Stringer, Waddell and Del Arco. Reward and punishment have demonstrated dissociable effects on motor learning and memory, which suggests that these reinforcers are differently processed by the brain. To test this possibility, we use electroencephalography to record cortical neural activity after the presentation of reward and punishment feedback during a visuomotor rotation task. Participants were randomly placed into Reward, Punishment, or Control groups and performed the task under different conditions to assess the adaptation (learning) and retention (memory) of the motor task. These conditions featured an incongruent position between the cursor and the target, with …

Screening For More Than 1,000 Pesticides And Environmental Contaminants In Cannabis By Gc/Q-Tof, Philip L. Wylie, Jessica Westland, Mei Wang, Mohamed M. Radwan Aug 2020

Screening For More Than 1,000 Pesticides And Environmental Contaminants In Cannabis By Gc/Q-Tof, Philip L. Wylie, Jessica Westland, Mei Wang, Mohamed M. Radwan

Faculty and Student Publications

A method has been developed to screen cannabis extracts for more than 1,000 pesticides and environmental pollutants using a gas chromatograph coupled to a high-resolution accurate mass quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC/Q-TOF). An extraction procedure was developed using acetonitrile with solid phase extraction cleanup. Before analysis, extracts were diluted 125:1 with solvent. Two data mining approaches were used together with a retention-time-locked Personal Compound Database and Library (PCDL) containing high-resolution accurate mass spectra for pesticides and other environmental pollutants. (1) A Find-by-Fragments (FbF) software tool extracts several characteristic exact mass ions within a small retention time window where the compound …

The Immediate Impact Of Covid-19 On Law Enforcement In The United States, Wesley G. Jennings, Nicholas M. Perez

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020, Southern Criminal Justice Association. During pandemics, like COVID-19, law enforcement agencies are responsible for working with government and public health officials to contain spread, serve the local community, and maintain public order. Given the person-to-person spread of COVID-19 through respiratory droplets, law enforcement officers are also at a heightened risk of exposure due to their close contact with members of the public. To protect officers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other agencies have made numerous recommendations for law enforcement agencies to protect officers and the public. Departments around the country have responded to the …

It is increasingly appreciated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with alternative splicing (AS) could be involved in aggressive hepatocellular carcinoma. Although many recent studies show the alteration of RNA alternative splicing by deregulated lncRNAs in cancer, the extent to which and how lncRNAs impact alternative splicing at the genome scale remains largely elusive. We analyzed RNA-seq data obtained from 369 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and 160 normal liver tissues, quantified 198,619 isoform transcripts, and identified a total of 1,375 significant AS events in liver cancer. In order …
