Crosscultural Backchannelling Responses Among Second Language Learners, Chien-Hui Hsu
Crosscultural Backchannelling Responses Among Second Language Learners, Chien-Hui Hsu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Backchannel responses (Yngve, 1970) have always been an essential component of conversational interactions that facilitate speaker-listener engagement and mutual shaping of narratives (Bavelas et al., 2000). This study aims to investigate the cross-linguistic difference in backchannelling responses between Taiwan Mandarin and English (General American) second language (L2) learners, and how those differences might impact communication in a cross-cultural classroom. The current study examines 20 participants, ten each from Taiwan Mandarin speakers and American English speakers. Each speaker was observed in an online conversation to eliminate the influence of non-verbal cues such as gestures and facial expressions. The backchannelling responses they …
The Metaphysics Of Creaturely Love In The Philosophy Of Anne Conway, Jeremiah Joseph Langer
The Metaphysics Of Creaturely Love In The Philosophy Of Anne Conway, Jeremiah Joseph Langer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A common belief during the early modern period held that humans bear ethical relations only to creatures with whom we share the right kinds of similarity. A tradition attributed to René Descartes holds speciesist and anthropocentric views according to which nonhuman animals are mere automata who lack rational minds. Even Baruch Spinoza, who was much more radical in his Ethics, suggests creaturely similarity is restricted to beings with rationality. As such, Descartes and Spinoza conclude that lower beings cannot be morally evaluated for their actions and humans cannot be morally evaluated for their treatment of lower creatures. In her sole …
Bigger Than Bees: Victorian England’S Relationship To The Bee – Considering Symbolism And Understanding, Grace Jacqueline Kaim
Bigger Than Bees: Victorian England’S Relationship To The Bee – Considering Symbolism And Understanding, Grace Jacqueline Kaim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The complex and beautiful relationship the people in Victorian England had to the bee is one that goes beyond ideas of politics and religion. This thesis will explore this relationship by utilizing print, ephemera, jewelry, and household items, to demonstrate how the representation and symbolism of the bee was recognized and cherished by Victorians. While bees did certainly have an intimate relationship to the areas of politics and religion, one that is acknowledged throughout this work, their connection to grander themes of introspection, industrialism, folklore, morality, and status helps us understand the Victorians on a deeper level.
The Microbial Communities Of Freshwater Invertebrates And Their Influence On Biogeochemical Cycling, Stephanie Nicole Vaughn
The Microbial Communities Of Freshwater Invertebrates And Their Influence On Biogeochemical Cycling, Stephanie Nicole Vaughn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nutrient cycling in freshwater systems is primarily performed by microorganisms, however the interactions between microorganisms and other aquatic organisms such as macroinvertebrates is poorly understood. Interactions between macroinvertebrates and their associated microbial community, their microbiome, are important to understanding ecosystem functioning and guiding conservation efforts for imperiled macroinvertebrate species. In this study, I characterized the microbiomes of various freshwater macroinvertebrates and investigated the influence of sample storage methods and environmental parameters on these microbial communities. I first evaluated the impact of different sample preservation methods on the gut microbiome of two crayfish species, Procambarus vioscai paynei collected in the field …
Dixieland Do Sul: Brazilian Racial Democracy And The Recontextualization Of Transnational Confederate Symbols (Vol. 2), Maximilian Xavier Conrad
Dixieland Do Sul: Brazilian Racial Democracy And The Recontextualization Of Transnational Confederate Symbols (Vol. 2), Maximilian Xavier Conrad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Following their defeat in the American Civil War, tens of thousands of American Southerners, many of them former Confederates, fled the United States to seek out new homelands in Latin America. Thousands would set their sights on Brazil, encouraged by the promise of arable land and the prospect of a new society in one of the hemisphere’s last slaveholding societies. Though many of these Confederados returned to the United States after Reconstruction, their influential presence in Brazil has remained a persistent factor. This thesis volume will focus on a semiotic struggle over the role of transnational Confederate symbols in the …
Using The Disc Personality Assessment To Enhance Organizational Climate And Culture At A Mississippi University, Brian Carlyle Grizzell
Using The Disc Personality Assessment To Enhance Organizational Climate And Culture At A Mississippi University, Brian Carlyle Grizzell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Employee turnover presents a costly challenge for institutions of higher learning. This includes significant financial burdens, diminished productivity, and disruptions in business operations. Moreover, high employee turnover erodes morale and negatively influences organizational climate and culture. According to the literature, many organizations have incorporated tools such as the DiSC, a personality assessment tool that measures individuals’ behavioral styles based on four key traits: Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C), to enhance team cohesion and improve person-environment fit (PE-Fit). However, limited research exists on whether the DiSC assessment is effective in addressing these issues in a higher education …
Spatial Variation Of Microbial Communities In Aquatic Ecosystems In The Southeastern United States, Jordan Heiman
Spatial Variation Of Microbial Communities In Aquatic Ecosystems In The Southeastern United States, Jordan Heiman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spatial variation in bacterial communities, or bacterial biogeography, is important for understanding the role of microorganisms in biogeochemical cycles. In the Southeastern United States, aquatic ecosystems are highly biodiverse and imperiled, yet few studies have investigated bacterial biodiversity and biogeography in this region. In this dissertation, I aimed to understand the bacterial biogeography in aquatic ecosystems in the Southeastern United States and how this spatial variation relates to abiotic factors in these ecosystems. To do this, I analyzed biogeographic patterns in bacterial communities from three distinct types of aquatic ecosystems (rivers, a lake, and beaches) and conducted a microcosm experiment …
Isolation Of Novel Myxobacteria And Progress Towards Heterologous Expression Of Uncharacterized Secondary Metabolites, Andrew Ahearne
Isolation Of Novel Myxobacteria And Progress Towards Heterologous Expression Of Uncharacterized Secondary Metabolites, Andrew Ahearne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Myxobacteria, first observed by Roland Thaxter in the late 19th century, are known for their unique swarming behavior, complex fruiting body formation and biosynthetic potential. Myxobacteria are noted for their large genomes and the presence of numerous biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that hint at their potential to produce novel metabolites with therapeutic properties. Isolation of myxobacteria utilizing E. coli and filter paper baiting yielded 20 myxobacteria isolated from rhizospheric soil samples in North America. Among these isolates, nine were identified as novel species, representing the genera Archangium, Myxococcus, Nannocystis, Polyangium, Pyxidicoccus, Sorangium, and Stigmatella. Comprehensive growth profiles, biochemical assays, and …
Formulation Design And Development For Extended-Release Drug Delivery System, Sheng Feng
Formulation Design And Development For Extended-Release Drug Delivery System, Sheng Feng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The drug delivery system enables the release of the active pharmaceutical ingredient to achieve a desired therapeutic response. Conventional, non-controlled drug delivery systems are unable to deliver the drug at a sustained rate which leads to poor bioavailability, fluctuations in plasma drug concentration, and potential side effects. The extended drug delivery system enables drug delivery at a sustained or predetermined rate to achieve maximum efficacy and safety. Different routes of drug administration, along with various extended-release dosage forms have been extensively developed such as oral delivery, parenteral delivery, transdermal delivery, ocular delivery, and tumor delivery among others. This dissertation developed …

Development Of Quercetin And Moxifloxacin Combination In-Situ Nanoemulgels For Wound Healing., Shravani Padhye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study aimed to develop an in-situ gel that could potentially be sprayed on the skin for faster and enhanced wound healing. Quercetin (QCT) is a bioflavonoid, which has potent anti-inflammatory properties and has shown enhanced wound closure along with good antimicrobial activity, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) which typically infect a wound. Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride (MOX) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has topically shown activity against Methicillin Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and, in combination with Quercetin, could provide better and quicker wound healing as compared to the current treatment available. QCT and MOX nanoemulsions …
Ecological And Evolutionary Ramifications Of Host-Parasite Interaction In Aquatic And Model Ecosystems, Akacia Halliday-Isaac
Ecological And Evolutionary Ramifications Of Host-Parasite Interaction In Aquatic And Model Ecosystems, Akacia Halliday-Isaac
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Host-parasite interactions are ubiquitous and have negative risks and consequences on individual, population, and evolutionary scales. These risks and consequences include altered population densities, changes in interspecies interactions, and rapid changes in host phenotypes. In this thesis, I seek to understand the ecological and evolutionary ramifications of host-parasite interactions within ecosystems. To do this, I investigated the presence and environmental correlates of potential host-parasite interactions in a freshwater ecosystem and used a model ecosystem to explore how past host-parasite coevolution affects community assembly dynamics and future adaptation in the presence of new stressors. To examine the presence of potentially parasitic …

"'This May Not Be War, But Rather Statesmanship': Sherman's March Through Griswoldville, Milledgeville, And Greater Savannah", Matthew Ryan Lempke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that four communities in Confederate Georgia visited by Union soldiers during Sherman’s March to the Sea reorients our understanding about the state’s continued ability to resist the United States military, the level and variations of destruction, the rationales and motivations behind targeted actions, the multiplicity of experiences among diverse participants, willing and unwilling alike, and of the campaign’s broader effectiveness. The first two communities, Griswoldville and Milledgeville, were indispensable locations that set in motion a coalescence of military and political setbacks from which Confederate Georgia did not recover. As the march progressed and entered coastal communities, the …
Effects Of Off-Season Fall-Winter Farm Field Flooding On Nitrogen Gas Production, Andrew Rosson
Effects Of Off-Season Fall-Winter Farm Field Flooding On Nitrogen Gas Production, Andrew Rosson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increased nitrogen (N) fertilizer use and cultivation of N-fixing crops have dramatically increased agricultural N inputs to the global N cycle. Excess N on agricultural lands is highly susceptible to loss through runoff or atmospheric emissions, potentially as a greenhouse gas (GHG). Nitrous oxide (N2O), a GHG with a warming potential ~300 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2), primarily enters the atmosphere through denitrification, which converts bioavailable nitrate (NO3-) to inert nitrogen gas (N2), with N2O as an intermediate. Wetlands are crucial for de-nitrification and N regulation due to their wet, anoxic soils, but have declined worldwide, including substantial losses …

High concentrations of putative MPs were found, with sites inside bays near population centers displaying higher …
Formulation Development Of Cannabidiol Using Various Technologies As An Approach To Enhance Its Solubility And Oral Bioavailability, Iman Taha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a crystalline compound extracted from a high-CBD variety of the Cannabis sativa plant. It has various pharmacological effects, including antipsychotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure, and anxiolytic properties. However, developing CBD formulations presents several challenges due to its high lipophilicity (log P of 6.3), poor water solubility (0.1 μg/mL), and significant first-pass metabolism, which results in low oral bioavailability, estimated at just 6%. Furthermore, research has demonstrated that CBD is susceptible to degradation from exposure to light, temperature, and oxidation during formulation. Currently, Epidiolex is the only commercially available preparation containing CBD that has been approved by the US-FDA for …
