Social Support As A Moderator Between Maternal Mental Health And Child School Engagement Among Families Exposed To Adversity, Kari Nicole Thomsen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
School engagement is a positive, malleable aspect of youth functioning. The present study examined the direct and interactive relations between social-ecological factors (i.e., maternal depression, maternal anxiety, youth social support) and youth school engagement among families exposed to adversity. Participants were 117 youths (Mage = 9.96, SD = 1.40; 51% female; 88.89% Black), and their female primary caregivers. Hierarchical linear regression modeling revealed a direct, positive relation between child social support and child school engagement. No direct relations were found between maternal anxiety or maternal depression and child school engagement. Social support moderated the relation between maternal anxiety and school …

Examining Associations Between Trauma, The Parent-Child Relationship, And Children's Functioning During Middle Childhood, Candice Blair Crossnine
Examining Associations Between Trauma, The Parent-Child Relationship, And Children's Functioning During Middle Childhood, Candice Blair Crossnine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Children's adaptive and maladaptive functioing may be influenced by several individual and relational factors, including aspects of the parent-child relationship. Specifically, a parent-child relationship that is characterized by closeness and affection may strengthen adaptive skills, while a parent-child relationship that is high in conflict may contribute to children's externaliziing and internalizing problems. The current study assessed associations between parent and child trauma exposure, aspects of the parent-child relationship, and children's adaptive and maladaptive functioning. Participants included 53 cargivers (Mage = 35.48; SD = 9.95) of children aged 6 to 11 years who were recruited organizations in the MidSouth, United States. …

Trauma is an unfortunate part of society, and it has detrimental impacts on youths' developmental processes. High-school minority students, particularly those with low socioeconomic status, are the most affected by trauma, affecting their school performance. This study seeks to gauge how different types of trauma (emotional, psychological, and physical) affect high-school students' male engagements. Binary logistic regression was utilized to control for the different types of trauma. Results show that Asian and Hispanic students who interact with trauma tend to seek afterschool activities to help mitigate the effects trauma has on them. Students' socioeconomic (SES) background also contributes to this. …

The Function Of Connection: A Qualitative Examination Of Social-Ecological Supports In The Lives Of Parentally Bereaved Youth, Lauren Schaefer
The Function Of Connection: A Qualitative Examination Of Social-Ecological Supports In The Lives Of Parentally Bereaved Youth, Lauren Schaefer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Background: The present study qualitatively explored the roles of multiple social-ecological supports (i.e., spirituality, parent-child communication, therapist support via grief counseling) in the lives of parentally bereaved youth. The selected supports are theoretically grounded within the well-documented and highly cited Ecological Systems Theory and the buffering hypothesis of social support. Method: Reflexive thematic analysis was utilized to analyze 30 semi-structured interviews with parentally bereaved youth ages 8-17 (Mage=12.53, SD=2.8). Most participants identified as girls (63.33%) and the most frequently reported race was White (43.33%). Results: The reflexive thematic analysis resulted in 10 overarching themes or domains: (1) Positive and Active …

Understanding The Relation Between Profiles Of Adolescent Peer Conflict, Socio-Demographic Factors, And Type 1 Diabetes Adaptation, Gabrielle Gipson Banks
Understanding The Relation Between Profiles Of Adolescent Peer Conflict, Socio-Demographic Factors, And Type 1 Diabetes Adaptation, Gabrielle Gipson Banks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Peer conflict and socio-demographic variables are differentially associated with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) outcomes in adolescents. The present study determined empirical patterns of the context (friend versus non-friend) and content (diabetes specific versus general) of peer conflict within a broader framework of socio-demographic factors and adolescents’ diabetes related adherence, quality of life, and glycemic control. Data were collected from 178 youth with T1D, ages 12-18, receiving treatment in a Mid-Southern outpatient endocrinology clinic. Patients reported adherence and quality of life using the Self-Care Inventory and PedsQL-Diabetes module, respectively. Glycemic control (HbA1c values) and illness duration were obtained from medical chart …

The affect regulation model conceptualizes episodes of emotional overeating and binge eating as an attempt to regulate or change one’s emotions. Dialectical behavior therapy, an evidence-based treatment for individuals with severe emotion dysregulation, has shown promise as an effective treatment for individuals with eating disorders, including binge eating disorder. Dialectical behavior therapy has also been identified and supported as an effective treatment for adolescents with severe emotion dysregulation. Research has only begun to explore the application of dialectical behavior therapy as an evidence-based treatment for adolescent binge eating and related behaviors; however, use of a condensed dialectical behavior therapy skills …
