Positive Youth Development In Practice: National, Systematic, And Community-Level Insights Into Youth Empowerment And Behavioral Outcomes, Pamela Nicole Graham
Positive Youth Development In Practice: National, Systematic, And Community-Level Insights Into Youth Empowerment And Behavioral Outcomes, Pamela Nicole Graham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Behavioral outcomes in adolescents and youth reflect broader patterns of mental health and community support. Violent behaviors, substance misuse, and poor mental health disproportionately impact those living with unmet needs in settings concentrated with structural marginalization. These contexts often limit youths’ access to supportive systems that improve their alignment with prosocial outcomes. Local agencies and governments could encourage empowerment based programming to promote healthier developmental trajectories. This dissertation applies the Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework, integrated with Social Disorganization and Social Control theories, to examine how youth empowerment programs moderate the relationship between youths’ structural contexts and their subsequent developmental …

Self-Compassion And Openness To Experience: A Meta-Analysis Of Relations, Jordan Moreno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract This meta-analysis sought to determine the overall association between self-compassion and openness to experience across the existing body of literature, as well as to add to the currently limited research on the associations between the individual subscales of self-compassion and openness to experience. A systematic search was conducted throughout several databases, including PsychINFO, ERIC, SCOPUS, and WorldCat Dissertation Search, using the following commonly used search terms: self-compassion, self compassion, Self-Compassion-Scale, open, openness, Big Five, HEXACO, and NEO.The study carefully extracted a total of 122 unique effect sizes (Pearson’s r) from 37 different samples, drawing on data from a combined …

Addressing The Importance Of Counseling For Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness Participating In Homeless Assistance Programs, Justin Corey Singleton
Addressing The Importance Of Counseling For Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness Participating In Homeless Assistance Programs, Justin Corey Singleton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The number of youths experiencing homelessness has increased significantly over the years. The mental health of youth experiencing homelessness is of great concern due to the high disparity rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders in comparison to their peers that have a home. A positive support factor can help youth by interceding during a time of need. Identifying that support can be challenging for youth as their cognitive functioning is often deregulated due to untreated mental illnesses. Concepts from the Ecobiodevelopmental Theory address the importance of counseling services assisting youth with establishing healthy and supportive outcomes by identifying …

Pathways Toward Healing: Examining The Role Of Emotion Regulation In Longitudinal Expressions Of Complicated Grief And Multisystemic Resilience Resources Among Bereaved Youth, Lacy Ellen Jamison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The death of a loved one is a profoundly impactful event, especially for youth who may lose a vital source of support during critical developmental stages. This study investigated the trajectories of complicated grief and multisystemic resilience resources among bereaved youth over a six-month period, considering the roles of emotion regulation strategies (expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal), potentially traumatic events (PTEs), and various sociodemographic and loss-related factors. The present study utilized self-report data from treatment-seeking bereaved youth (N = 106). Parallel process latent growth curve modeling (PP-LGCM) was used to explore individual differences in grief and resilience trajectories. Post-hoc moderation …
Factors Associated With Youth’S Perceptions Of Parenting: The Role Of Social Ecological Assets, Anissa Garza
Factors Associated With Youth’S Perceptions Of Parenting: The Role Of Social Ecological Assets, Anissa Garza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Minimal research has examined factors that contribute to youth’s perceptions of maternal parenting practices. The current study included 263 mother-youth dyads. Mothers were aged 23-64 (Mage=36.42, SD=7.89, 82.9% Black) and youth were aged 8-17 (Mage=12.11, SD=2.77, 88.2% Black, 58.9% girls). A multivariate linear regression was used to examine how youth’s behavior problems and internal, peer, school, and community assets were related to their perceptions of positive and negative maternal parenting, while accounting for youth age, gender, socioeconomic status, and maternal adversity exposure. The model was significant (F(9, 236)= 7.24, p<.001, R2=.22) for positive parenting perceptions and for negative parenting perceptions (F(9, 236)=6.76, p<.001, R2=.21). Younger age, more internal assets, and more community assets were related to greater positive parenting perceptions, while more behavior problems and fewer community assets were related to more negative parenting perceptions. Findings could inform the development of family-focused, multisystemic interventions that enhance the mother-child relationship.

Development, Validation, And Item Bias Assessment Of The 4-Item Self Care Inventory Among Racially And Income Diverse Adolescents Living With Type 1 Diabetes And Their Caregivers, Vinkrya Ellison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Objective: For youth with Type 1 Diabetes and their families, engaging in multiple complex health behaviors may delay and/or reduce serious complications by attempting to keep blood glucose levels within a specific range for as long as possible. As such, quick and rapid assessment of diabetes self-care behaviors is important, yet few brief (e.g., 2-5 items) established measures exist; and even fewer have been evaluated for bias across socio-medical-demographic proxies for privilege/oppression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the Self-Care Inventory (SCI-R) and to evaluate validity, reliability, and measurement bias across socio-demographics. Methods: …
Multicultural Orientation-Informed Focused Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Adolescents Seeking Bariatric Surgery, Mary Elizabeth Keenan-Pfeiffer
Multicultural Orientation-Informed Focused Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Adolescents Seeking Bariatric Surgery, Mary Elizabeth Keenan-Pfeiffer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Objective: The present paper details a pragmatic trial of a Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT) intervention for adolescents seeking bariatric surgery. The intervention was developed within a multicultural orientation (MCO) framework to acknowledge families’ diverse sociocultural contexts and clinical needs. The intervention aimed to increase psychological flexibility, specifically by supporting values-consistent behavior change through openness to internal experiences and present moment awareness, within the context of seeking bariatric surgery. It was designed to be flexibly implemented across two sessions, one focused on increasing adolescent psychological flexibility, the other on increasing caregiver psychological flexibility. The present paper describes implementation and …

Self-Compassion And Psychological Flexibility: A Meta-Analysis Of Relations, Jordan Moreno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract This meta-analysis sought to examine the relation between self-compassion and psychological flexibility as well as to add to the literature pertaining to potential moderators of this relation. The study extracted 104 unique effect sizes (Pearson’s r) from 44 samples, with data from 11,660 participants. Consistent with prior research, results indicated a moderate positive relation (.62) between self-compassion and psychological flexibility. However, the study did not find any significant moderation effects for age or gender. All studies used a variation of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) including the Self-Compassion Scale – Short Form and the Self-Compassion Scale – Positive Factors. The …
Evaluating Item Bias And Equitability Of The Pediatric Quality Of Life Inventory- Diabetes Module 5 Item Version Amongst Income And Racially Diverse Youth Living With Type 1 Diabetes, Kasey Harry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is one of the most common chronic diseases among children in the United States, affecting around 244,000 children and adolescents. In 2014–2015 around 18,200 youth were diagnosed with T1D. T1D requires youth to participate in complex and burdensome health behaviors that can affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Measures such as the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory- Diabetes Module Version 3.2 (PedsQL-DM) are used to determine how T1D has influenced youth and caregivers’ daily lives. Recently, a 5-item version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory- Diabetes Module (PedsQL-DMSF5) was developed; however, it is presently unclear …
