We investigate the nature and spectroscopic diversity of early galaxies from a sample of 41 sources at (Formula presented) with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/NIRSpec prism observations. We compare the properties of strong ultraviolet (UV) line emitters, traced by intense C iv emission, with those of more ‘typical’ sources with weak or undetected C iv. The more typical (or ‘C iv-weak’) sources reveal significant scatter in their C iii] line strengths, UV continuum slopes, and physical sizes, spanning C iii] equivalent widths (EWs) of (Formula presented) 1–51 Å, UV slopes of (Formula presented) to (Formula presented), and half-light radii of …

A precision measurement of the K ⁎0 meson yield is reported in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7,11.5,14.6,19.6, and 27 GeV using the high-statistics data sample collected by the STAR experiment during the Beam Energy Scan II (BES-II) program at RHIC. The transeverse momentum ( pT )-integrated yield ratios (K*0+K*0‾)/(K++K−) in central collisions show a suppression relative to peripheral collisions at the (1.7–3.6) σ level, while a thermal model without final-stage rescattering overpredicts this ratio with a deviation of (6.9–8.2) σ . These results indicate a loss of the measured K …

The southern Appalachian orogen preserves a complex distribution of metamorphism and deformation varying in timing, magnitude, and spatial extent. These complexities give rise to disparate interpretations for southern Appalachian tectonic evolution, which complicates the testing and interpretation of tectonic models in this system. New monazite (Mnz) and xenotime (Xtm) laser ablation split stream (LASS) analyses alongside Mnz-Xtm thermometry in the orogenic core in the eastern Blue Ridge (EBR), western Inner Piedmont (WIP), and Cat Square terranes (CST) of North Carolina yield new constraints that define distinct pro- and retrograde metamorphic events. The EBR preserves two prograde thermal events: the Taconic …

Objective: Disputes over election fraud have become a defining feature of contemporary American politics, yet it remains unclear whether partisans are disagreeing about the same underlying phenomenon. This article examines how Americans understand and interpret the phrase “election fraud” and whether partisan divisions reflect differences in concern about fraud or differences in what the term itself is taken to mean. Methods: We use novel survey questions included in our team's module of the 2024 Cooperative Election Study (N = 1000). An open-ended question captures respondents’ own top-of-mind associations with the phrase “election fraud,” while a closed-ended item asks respondents to …

Angiotensin II (AngII) exerts a critical role in thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) formation via AngII type 1a receptor (AT1aR). However, the principal cell type mediating this process remains unclear. Our previous study demonstrated that S100A4-lineage cells are present in the aortic wall and involved in AngII-induced vascular remodeling. In the present study, we investigated whether S100A4-lineage cells contribute to AngII-mediated TAA formation through AT1aR. Proteomic, bulk RNA sequencing, and single-cell RNA sequencing data were analyzed to assess changes in S100A4 abundance in response to AngII infusion. Lineage tracing was performed to track S100A4-lineage cells during AngII-mediated TAA formation. Either saline …

Spontaneous haploid genome doubling (SHGD) is a valuable trait in maize breeding, enabling the development of doubled haploid (DH) lines without chemical chromosome doubling. However, SHGD is a rare phenotype, expressed in only a small fraction of maize germplasm, making its identification resource-intensive. This study evaluated the efficiency of a two-stage field screening approach designed to identify maize genotypes with high haploid male fertility (HMF), a key indicator of SHGD potential. Simulation analyses showed that evaluating 50 haploid plants per genotype, combined with a 25% HMF threshold, provides an optimal balance between detection accuracy and resource efficiency. Across three growing …

Invasive plant species present a growing ecological and economic challenge, and often adapt rapidly to their novel environments through complex demographic and evolutionary processes. Invasion genomics offers powerful tools to disentangle these processes, but most studies rely on geographically narrow sampling across native and non-native ranges. Erigeron canadensis is a cosmopolitan weed native to North America that has successfully invaded diverse climates worldwide. We used double-digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) to investigate the genetic diversity and structure of 280 E. canadensis populations across the Northern Hemisphere. We found that native and non-native populations maintained comparable genetic diversity. Population structure …

Timing of seed germination is critical for survival of annual plants in seasonal climates. We tested the hypothesis that seeds of the winter annual species Cardamine impatiens (Brassicaceae) “track” their thermal environment and synchronize germination with favorable growth conditions. We predicted that seeds buried in the field from maturity to autumn germinate best at autumn temperatures, while those buried from maturity to spring germinate best in early spring. We monitored seasonal changes in germinability by exhuming field-buried seeds monthly for 30 months and incubating them under laboratory conditions. The effects of temperature on the transition of dormancy status also were …

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is a globally crucial food crop and a model plant for studying symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes. Triacontanol (TRIA) is a natural plant growth regulator that enhances photosynthetic efficiency, stress tolerance, antioxidant enzyme activities and yield in crops. However, its regulatory role in nodulation and nitrogen fixation in legumes remains unclear. In this study, soybean seedlings inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain USDA110 were treated with different concentrations of TRIA (0, 0.33, 0.5, 1 and 2 μg/mL). Then, oxidative stress indicators and comparative transcriptomic analysis were performed to check the oxidative status and screen the candidate …

Combinations of additive manufacturing methods such as inkjet printing and various 3D printing techniques have led to advances in customizable electronic devices by reducing the need for the complex assembly of individually fabricated components. Such combinations are particularly attractive for the fabrication of electrochemical sensing platforms, where the sizes and spatial configurations of electrodes enable (or limit) the sensitivity of the sensors. However, to realize the potential of the combined fabrication methods, the parameters of each printing technique must be mutually compatible. For instance, electrochemical sensing assemblies consisting of inkjet-printed metals on 3D-printed plastics require post-processing steps that convert nanoparticular …

The Impact Of Seyfert Jets On Galaxy Evolution Across Major Scaling Relations, Julianne Goddard, Isaac Shlosman, Emilio Romano-Diaz
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We analyze a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of jetted Seyfert galaxies over z < ∼10 projected on the major scaling relations, comparing trajectories of “normal” versus jet-hosting galaxies. Models include thermal and mechanical jet feedback launched from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) seeded at z ∼ 9.1 and z ∼ 3.7 with M• ∼ 106 M⊙ in galaxies within dark matter halos of (Formula presented) logMhalo/M⊙∼11.8 at z = 0. A single parameter, the SMBH accretion efficiency, has been varied, resulting in Ljet ∼ 1040−42 erg s−1, and SMBH accretion rates range between ∼0.2 and 10−4 of the Eddington rate. We find that jet feedback (1) suppresses central star formation rates (SFRs), redistributes gas to larger radii, (2) generates long-lived expanding shocks that couple to the interstellar medium and circumgalactic …

Starting With Story, Not Symptom: Narrative Collapse And Cultural Repair In Appalachia, Wayne Coombs Ph.D.
Journal of Appalachian Health
Appalachia’s opioid crisis reflects uneven burdens, especially in distressed coalfield counties, and it cannot be solved by symptom tracking alone. This commentary argues for a narrative shift, starting with story and cultural repair alongside clinical care. Narrative collapse is defined here as the loss of shared, dependable public meaning across groups, not the absence of storytelling in families, churches, and recovery circles. Trauma science suggests that chronic threat reshapes nervous systems across generations, making safety a prerequisite for renewed trust. Drawing on narrative identity research, the piece proposes peer story work as infrastructure that can reduce shame, support treatment engagement, …

The rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of star-forming galaxies are increasingly important as they become one of the primary windows to probe the physical properties of cosmic dawn (z > 8) galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope. However, the systematic discrepancies between UV and optical gas-phase metallicity measurements remain poorly understood in the local universe, partly due to challenges in achieving precise comparisons between UV and optical spectra for the same objects. In this work, we introduce a novel method that leverages the He II λ1640 and He II λ4686 nebular emission lines to achieve accurate aperture and reddening corrections between …

We investigate the relationship between star formation and X-ray emission from the hot interstellar medium (ISM) on ∼kiloparsec scales in NGC 4254 (M99) by combining spatially resolved star formation histories (SFHs) and Bayesian X-ray spectral fitting. We measure subgalactic star formation rates (SFR) by modeling spectrophotometric UV-IR data with flexible SFHs, and we produce point-source-subtracted maps of the diffuse X-ray emission using Chandra data. We extract and fit the spectra of five regions selected by their SFR density ΣSFR, deriving hot gas luminosities and plasma temperatures. We examine the subgalactic kT–ΣSFR and LXgas − Σ …

Medication deprescribing is a targeted strategy to reduce inappropriate polypharmacy. Patients in primary care settings have reported high willingness to discontinue medications, but this phenomenon is less well studied in hospital settings. In this explorative post hoc analysis of two previously described clinical trials, we assessed patients' attitudes towards deprescribing in two hospital-based cohorts: acutely admitted older medical patients (≥ 65 years) in the emergency department at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre (October 2018–April 2021) and multimorbid patients (≥ 18 years) referred to an outpatient clinic at Copenhagen University Hospital Amager (March 2019–December 2019). Among 104 and 72 patients in each …

Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan For Landslides For The Kentucky River Area Development District, Kentucky, Hudson J. Koch, Matt M. Crawford, Jason M. Dortch
Contract Reports--KGS
Landslides are a widespread and complex geologic hazard that affects people and infrastructure. The Kentucky River Area Development District, Kentucky, sustains relatively high landslide activity that impacts several municipalities in eastern Kentucky. This hazard mitigation planning project outlines landslide hazard and risk assessments for the Kentucky River Area Development District, with information needed for each community in the region to develop mitigation strategies that will support infrastructure and development needs, land-use planning, situational awareness, and response and recovery actions for the communities.

Animal ecologists frequently quantify variance in hierarchically structured traits in wild populations. Importantly, phenotypic plasticity within the period of measurement can modify the trait of interest in response to various unmeasured, temporally or spatially changeable, environmental conditions. Non-random sampling among units of the random effect (e.g. individuals) regarding the environment at issue may lead to estimates of the variance among ((Formula presented.)) or within ((Formula presented.)) such units that conflate several types of processes. This mixing of underlying biology can affect interpretations of the random effect variance. Here, we explore the conditions leading to this situation and assess potential solutions …
