Estimate Of Background Baseline And Upper Limit On The Chiral Magnetic Effect In Isobar Collisions At √S Nn = 200 Gev At The Bnl Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

For the search of the chiral magnetic effect (CME), STAR previously presented the results from isobar collisions ( 96/44 Ru + 96/44 Ru, 96/40 Zr + 96/40 Zr) obtained through a blind analysis. The ratio of results in Ru + Ru to Zr + Zr collisions for the CME-sensitive charge-dependent azimuthal correlator (Δγ), normalized by elliptic anisotropy (v2 ), was observed to be close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio. The background baseline for the isobar ratio, Y = (Δγ /v2 )Ru (Δγ /v2 )Zr , is naively expected to be …

Exclusive J/Ψ, Ψ(2s), And E+E− Pair Production In Au + Au Ultraperipheral Collisions At The Bnl Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Measurements of exclusive J/ψ, ψ (2s), and electron-positron (e+e−) pair photoproduction in Au + Au ultraperipheral collisions are reported by the STAR experiment at √sNN = 200 GeV. We report several first measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, which are (i) J/ψ photoproduction with large momentum transfer up to 2.2 (GeV/c)2 , (ii) coherent J/ψ photoproduction associated with neutron emissions from nuclear breakup, (iii) the rapidity dependence of incoherent J/ψ photoproduction, (iv) the ψ (2s) photoproduction cross section at midrapidity, and (v) e+e− pair photoproduction up to high invariant mass of 6 GeV/c2 . For measurement (ii), the …

Jet-Hadron Correlations With Respect To The Event Plane In √S Nn = 200 Gev Au + Au Collisions In Star, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in √s NN = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with 15 < pT,jet < 20 and 20 < pT,jet < 40 GeV/c were reconstructed with the anti-kT algorithm with radius parameter setting of R = 0.4 in the 20–50% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. The reaction plane fit method is implemented to remove the flow-modulated background with better precision than prior methods. Yields and widths of jet-associated charged-hadron distributions are extracted in three angular bins between the jet axis and the event plane. The event-plane (EP) dependence is further quantified by ratios of the associated yields in different EP bins. No dependence on orientation of the jet axis with respect to the event plane is seen within the uncertainties in the kinematic regime studied. This finding is consistent with a similar experimental observation by ALICE in √s NN = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collision data.

Measurements Of Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence Of Higher-Order Net-Proton Cumulants In 𝑝+𝑝 Collisions At √𝑠 = 200 Gev From Star At Rhic, Star Collaboration Jan 2024

Measurements Of Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence Of Higher-Order Net-Proton Cumulants In 𝑝+𝑝 Collisions At √𝑠 = 200 Gev From Star At Rhic, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from√𝑠 = 200 GeV 𝑝+𝑝 collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios 𝐶4 ∕𝐶2, 𝐶5 ∕𝐶1, and 𝐶6 ∕𝐶2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios 𝐶5 ∕𝐶1 and 𝐶6 ∕𝐶2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in 𝑝+𝑝 collisions.

Measurements Of The 𝑍0 ∕𝛾∗ Cross Section And Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry In 510 Gev 𝑝+𝑝 Collisions, The Star Collaboration Jan 2024

Measurements Of The 𝑍0 ∕𝛾∗ Cross Section And Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry In 510 Gev 𝑝+𝑝 Collisions, The Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The differential cross section for 𝑍0 production, measured as a function of the boson’s transverse momentum (𝑝T), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the 𝑍0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in 𝑝 + 𝑝 → 𝑊 ∕𝑍 + 𝑋 from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 𝑍0 ∕𝛾∗ differential cross section as a function of its …

Measurement Of Flow Coefficients In High-Multiplicity P + Au, D + Au, And 3 He + Au Collisions At √S Nn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration Jan 2024

Measurement Of Flow Coefficients In High-Multiplicity P + Au, D + Au, And 3 He + Au Collisions At √S Nn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Flow coefficients (v2 and v3 ) are measured in high-multiplicity p + Au, d + Au, and 3 He + Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s NN = 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The measurements utilize two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity requirement of |η| < 0.9 and a pair gap of |Δη| > 1.0. The primary focus is on analysis methods, particularly the subtraction of nonflow contributions. Four established nonflow subtraction methods are applied to determine vn, validated using the HIJING event generator. vn values are compared across the three collision systems at similar multiplicities; this comparison cancels the final-state effects and isolates the …

Reaction Plane Correlated Triangular Flow In Au+Au Collisions At √S Nn = 3 Gev, Star Collaboration Jan 2024

Reaction Plane Correlated Triangular Flow In Au+Au Collisions At √S Nn = 3 Gev, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We measure triangular flow relative to the reaction plane at 3 GeV center-of-mass energy in Au+Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant v3 signal for protons is observed, which increases for higher rapidity, higher transverse momentum, and more peripheral collisions. The triangular flow is essentially rapidity-odd with a slope at midrapidity, dv3/dy|(y=0), opposite in sign compared to the slope for directed flow. No significant v3 signal is observed for charged pions and kaons. Comparisons with models suggest that a mean field potential is required to describe these results, and that the triangular shape of the participant …

Results On Elastic Cross Sections In Proton–Proton Collisions At √𝑠 = 510 Gev With The Star Detector At Rhic, The Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy√𝑠 = 510 GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range 0.23 ≤ −𝑡 ≤ 0.67 GeV2. This is the only measurement of the proton-proton elastic cross section in this 𝑡 range for collision energies above the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) and below the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliders. We find that a constant slope 𝐵 does not fit the data in …

Upper Limit On The Chiral Magnetic Effect In Isobar Collisions At The Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, Star Collaboration Jan 2024

Upper Limit On The Chiral Magnetic Effect In Isobar Collisions At The Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon that arises from the QCD anomaly in the presence of an external magnetic field. The experimental search for its evidence has been one of the key goals of the physics program of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The STAR Collaboration has previously presented the results of a blind analysis of isobar collisions (96 44 Ru + 96 44 Ru, 96 40 Zr + 96 40 Zr) in the search for the CME. The isobar ratio (Y ) of CME-sensitive observable, charge separation scaled by elliptic anisotropy, is close to but systematically larger than …

Production Of Protons And Light Nuclei In Au+Au Collisions At √S Nn = 3 Gev With The Star Detector, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report the systematic measurement of protons and light nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at √s NN = 3 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The transverse momentum (pT ) spectra of protons (p), deuterons (d), tritons (t), 3 He, and 4 He have been measured from midrapidity to target rapidity for different collision centralities. We present the rapidity and centrality dependence of particle yields (dN/dy), average transverse momentum (〈pT 〉), yield ratios (d/p, t/p, 3 He /p, 4 He /p), as well as the coalescence parameters (B2 , B3 ). The 4π yields …

Gas Assisted Electron Beam Patterning Processes, Deepak Kumar Jan 2024

Gas Assisted Electron Beam Patterning Processes, Deepak Kumar

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Radiolysis is a complex phenomenon in which molecules subjected to ionizing radiation form new chemical species. Electron-beam irradiation has proven to be a versatile approach for significantly altering materials’ properties and forms the basis for electron-beam lithography using both organic and inorganic resists. Electron-beam exposure is normally carried out under high vacuum conditions to reduce contamination and allow for unhindered interaction between the electrons and the resist material. Exposure under an ambient gas at sub-atmospheric pressures has been found to provide a distinct mechanism which can be exploited to circumvent some of the challenges associated with material processing and significantly …

Reinventing Integrated Photonic Devices And Circuits For High Performance Communication And Computing Applications, Venkata Sai Praneeth Karempudi

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

The long-standing technological pillars for computing systems evolution, namely Moore's law and Von Neumann architecture, are breaking down under the pressure of meeting the capacity and energy efficiency demands of computing and communication architectures that are designed to process modern data-centric applications related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). In response, both industry and academia have turned to 'more-than-Moore' technologies for realizing hardware architectures for communication and computing. Fortunately, Silicon Photonics (SiPh) has emerged as one highly promising ‘more-than-Moore’ technology. Recent progress has enabled SiPh-based interconnects to outperform traditional electrical interconnects, offering advantages like high bandwidth density, …

Design And Control Of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Coreless Machines With Special Windings, Yaser Chulaee Jan 2024

Design And Control Of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Coreless Machines With Special Windings, Yaser Chulaee

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), particularly those of the axial flux type, are being researched and developed for various applications such as HVAC systems, aviation propulsion, and electric vehicles. The coreless (air-cored) stator axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine topology offers notable advantages over conventional designs by eliminating magnetic cores and their associated losses. These advantages include potentially higher efficiency, zero cogging torque, and reduced audible noise and vibration. Eliminating the magnetic core also allows for more effective cooling systems, as coolants can be in direct contact with the stator windings, potentially improving power density and specific torque.

The absence …

INTRODUCTION: Both micro- and macrostructural white matter (WM) abnormalities, particularly those related to axonal degeneration, are associated with cognitive decline in adults with Down syndrome (DS) prior to a diagnosis of Alzheimer disease. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a support protein within myelinated axons released into blood following axonal damage. In this study we investigated cross-sectional relationships between WM microstructural changes as measured by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and plasma NfL concentration in adults with DS without dementia.

METHODS: Thirty cognitively stable (CS) adults with DS underwent diffusion-weighted MRI scanning and plasma NfL measurement. DTI measures of select WM tracts …

Get It In Writing: How To Make Medications For Opioid Use Disorder Available During Incarceration, Margaret J. Mcgladrey, Jordan Kelsch, Michelle R. Lofwall, Laura C. Fanucchi, Sharon L. Walsh, Carrie B. Oser

Center on Drug and Alcohol Research Faculty Publications

In a case example from the Kentucky HEALing Communities Study, extensive resources were deployed to address structural barriers and facilitate the provision of medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) in an urban county jail. However, implementation was unsuccessful, and this case example emphasizes the importance of including evidence-based medication for OUD (MOUD) treatment in the scope of work of jails’ contracted medical providers. The privatization of correctional health care services allows local governments with opioid abatement funds to incorporate requirements into medical provider contracts to screen all people entering jails for OUD and to offer MOUD at intake, throughout incarceration, …

Solvent-Free Manufacturing Of Lithium-Ion Battery Electrodes Via Cold Plasma, Zhiming Liang, Tianyi Li, Holden Chi, Joseph Ziegelbauer, Kai Sun, Ming Wang, Wei Zhang, Tuo Liu, Yang-Tse Cheng, Zonghai Chen, Xiaohong Gayden, Chunmei Ban

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Slurry casting has been used to fabricate lithium-ion battery electrodes for decades, which involves toxic and expensive organic solvents followed by high-cost vacuum drying and electrode calendering. This work presents a new manufacturing method using a nonthermal plasma to create inter- particle binding without using any polymeric binding materials, enabling solvent-free manufacturing electrodes with any electrochemistry of choice. The cold-plasma-coating technique enables fabricating electrodes with thickness (>200 lm), high mass loading (>30 mg cm^-2), high peel strength, and the ability to print lithium-ion batteries in an arbitrary geometry. This crosscutting, chemistry agnostic, platform technology would increase energy density, …

Introduction The Appalachia region of North America is known to have significant health disparities, specifically, worse risk factors and outcomes for stroke. Appalachians are more likely to have comorbidities related to stroke, such as diabetes, obesity, and tobacco use, and are often less likely to have stroke interventions, such as mechanical thrombectomy (MT), for emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO). As our Comprehensive Stroke Center directly serves stroke subjects from both Appalachian and non-Appalachian areas, inflammatory proteomic biomarkers were identified associated with stroke outcomes specific to subjects residing in Appalachia. Methods There were 81 subjects that met inclusion criteria for this …

Ultra‐Fast Finite Element Analysis Of Coreless Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines, Yaser Chulaee, Dan M. Ionel Jan 2024

Ultra‐Fast Finite Element Analysis Of Coreless Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines, Yaser Chulaee, Dan M. Ionel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Large‐scale design optimisation techniques enable the design of high‐performance electric machines. Electromagnetic 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is typically employed in optimisation studies for accurate analysis of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines, which require extensive computational resources. To reduce the computational burden, a FEA‐based mathematical method relying on the geometric and magnetic symmetry of coreless AFPM machines is proposed to estimate the machine performance indicators using the least number of FEA solutions, thereby significantly lowering the running time. This method is generally applicable to AFPM machines with low saturation effects and cogging torque as exemplified for a printed circuit …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

This paper presents a large-scale multi-objective design optimization for a direct-drive wind turbine generator concept that is based upon an experimentally validated computational model for a small-scale prototype motor of the same type. By integrating an outer reluctance-type rotor and a segmented stator with toroidally wound single-coil modules containing spoke-type PMs, the design optimization aims to minimize losses, active mass, and torque ripple while adhering to a power factor constraint. The AC windings and PMs are positioned in the stator and this concept enhances flux concentration, enabling the use of more affordable high energy non-rare-earth (special type) magnets. The exterior …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

This paper presents the optimization study targeting a specific drive cycle for a MAGNUS-type axial-flux permanent magnet vernier machine (AFPMVM). The proposed MAGNUS machine has a novel design with a dual-stator configuration, where only one stator is wound, with a high-polarity spoke permanent magnet (PM) rotor. The machine topology has a 3D flux path, which necessitates the analysis of a large finite element (FE) model. However, due to the computational complexity and time required for such a large FE model, a new approach was developed. This approach involves a computationally efficient finite element analysis (CE-FEA) model combined with a single …

To examine trends in policy agency opinions over time, …

A Social History Of Opioids’ Crimedical Cycle, Jerel M. Ezell, Alex Rains, Babatunde Patrick Ajayi, Kyle Miller, Erin Augustine, Dawn Goddard-Eckrich, Elizabeth N. Kinnard, Michelle R. Lofwall Jan 2024

A Social History Of Opioids’ Crimedical Cycle, Jerel M. Ezell, Alex Rains, Babatunde Patrick Ajayi, Kyle Miller, Erin Augustine, Dawn Goddard-Eckrich, Elizabeth N. Kinnard, Michelle R. Lofwall

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

Historically, public and political discourse around people who nonmedically use opioids has largely been rendered via a deficits-oriented lens, presenting this population as weak, disinterested, and deviant, and thus undesirable and ill-positioned for wellness and communal integration. These narratives, and subsequent policies used to engage people who use opioids, are intermittently formed and disrupted by geopolitical changes, as public and institutional attitudes, often driven by racial and class-related considerations, shift. As part of what we term the crimedical cycle, a population’s behaviors fluctuate between periods of medicalization and criminalization. Strengths-based theory, an offshoot of ‘positive psychology’ that helps contextualize the crimedical …
