Introduction To Descriptive Research Administration Statistics Using Excel, Alex Wagner
Research Analytics Summit 2024
This session is a basic introduction to descriptive statistics for research administration professionals. No worries! Excel will be used throughout, nothing will be calculated by hand. Averages (means), medians, standard deviations, correlations and other basic statistical concepts will be explained using only research administration data as context. A sample research administration data set will be provided and Excel will be used to analyze the data. Some sample charts and best practices in creating these charts will also be shown. Again using Excel. This is the perfect session for anyone in research administration whose roles include analyzing data using descriptive statistics. …

The Semiotics Of Smell: Gender, Materiality, And The Language Of Fragrances, Kathryn Copeland
The Semiotics Of Smell: Gender, Materiality, And The Language Of Fragrances, Kathryn Copeland
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Fragrances have long been used in a variety of cultures to communicate or articulate perceptions of different types of people or personae (Classen, Howes, & Synnott; 1994); however, the meanings “articulated” by fragrances have rarely been studied through the analytical frameworks of indexicality, enregisterment, and materiality (Eckert, 2008; Johnstone, 2016; Miller, 2005; Silverstein, 2003).
To do this, I first conducted a quantitative corpus analysis of user-generated reviews of popular perfumes on the fragrance database Fragrantica to identify differences in how reviewers of “men’s” fragrances and “women’s” fragrances describe their experience with the fragrances, and what these patterns indicate about how …
A Computational Investigation Of English Spelling, John Winstead
A Computational Investigation Of English Spelling, John Winstead
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
This thesis examines the predictability and regularity of English orthography through computational methods. The primary objective is to use n-gram models to predict missing letters in English words by exploiting contextual information from adjacent letters. The study evaluates the impact of dataset size, word length, letter position, and vowel presence on the predictive accuracy of these models, uncovering patterns and structures inherent to English spelling.
The research utilizes a range of datasets, including the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, the Brown Corpus, the Corpus of Late Modern English Texts, the Lampeter Corpus of Early Modern English Tracts, and the Open …
De Historia Linguae Latinae In Columbia, Esteban Arango Casas
De Historia Linguae Latinae In Columbia, Esteban Arango Casas
Theses and Dissertations--Modern and Classical Languages, Literature and Cultures
Abstract: Latin was the official language of ancient Rome, and consequently it saw its rise and fall. Nevertheless, it did not disappear after the Roman Empire fell. Latin continued thriving during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, but it did not stay only in Europe. It went overseas and reached other continents like Asia, Africa, and finally America. Unfortunately, there were opinions that Latin in the Americas was of a lesser quality. For that reason, we thought important to show some of the most skillful Latin writers in Colombia. We selected three authors who were born in Colombia or who …

Background: A generic right of way (ROW) rule at uncontrolled intersections is to yield to the vehicle from the right, if not stated otherwise in the right-hand side driving countries such as the US. However, this rule is greatly neglected in practice, resulting in unsafe situations. This study investigated the effectiveness of using two proposed temporary yield signs: “Yield to Traffic on right” (Sign1_YT) and “Yield to Person on right” (Sign2_YP), to remind the drivers of ROW rule at uncontrolled intersections. Method: A driving simulator experiment was conducted with 20 drivers (aged 18-65 years), 50% males, recording observations for 198 …

Reflections On Arlington Heights: Fifty Years Of Exclusionary Zoning Litigation And Beyond, Robert G. Schwemm

Fifty years ago, when I was two years out of law school, I began work on a case—Metropolitan Housing Development Corp. v. Village of Arlington Heights—that was destined to take on epic proportions in the housing discrimination field. The case started with a complaint filed in 1972, shortly before I joined the plaintiffs’ legal team, and was not finally resolved until 1980, after I’d left that team to become a law professor. During the seven years that I worked on the Arlington Heights case, it produced a major Supreme Court decision on standing and the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause3 …

The Power Of The Electorate Under State Constitutions, Joshua A. Douglas

Voters are special. They are the foundation of our constitutional democracy. Everything starts with the voters.
State constitutions, too, are special, as the recent surge in scholarship on state constitutions demonstrates.
This Article bridges the gap between various strands of scholarship on state constitutions, the right to vote, and democracy, making several novel claims about the way in which state constitutions protect voters. First, this Article canvasses all fifty state constitutions to conclude that they contain multiple levels of protection for the right to vote through numerous clauses that, in combination, elevate the status of voters in the constitutional structure. …

Covid-19 And Access To Healthcare At The Crossing Of Race, Poverty, And Rurality, Shavonnie R. Carthens
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Black Americans make up 7.7 percent of the rural population in the United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic many in this population found themselves at a unique intersection of inequity - being Black, poor, and residing in a rural area. Poverty is a known contributor to negative health outcomes and is a risk factor for death from coronavirus infection. The association between race and poverty, when examining infectivity and mortality rates of COVID-19, have disproportionately devastated Black Americans and other minorities. Further, research indicates the presence of a general “rural mortality penalty” wherein rural Black communities have higher death rates …

The news industry in the United States faces a funding crisis because the tech giants, particularly Google and Facebook, have acceded to the advertising monopolies once enjoyed by the newspaper industry itself. Breakup of these monopolies is unlikely to restore the news industry’s profits, however, because search and social media will remain better ad distribution channels than the news whether search and social media are competitive or monopolized. A better solution to the funding crisis would be for government to divide the advertising distribution market, reallocating to the news industry some of the ad impressions taken from it by the …

Looking Back: Put A Reading Bathtub In The Library, Reinette F. Jones
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Book lovers may remember when old school librarians warned children not to read library books while in the bathtub. Today those memories are in juxtaposition with the new National Read in the Bathtub Day on February 9th. The unanswered question is when exactly this special day became a thing. While the reference librarians search for a definitive answer, there is a companion question. Who came up with the fun idea to place a reading bathtub in the children’s library? A reading bathtub is just that, a bathtub in the public area of the library, an upholstered piece of library furniture …

Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion In Academic Library Hiring, Keahi Adolpho, Stephen G. Krueger, Luke Sutherland, Adrian Williams

We do not know how many trans and gender diverse people work in libraries in the United States. Like the US Census, the American Library Association’s demographic survey of its members (which is by no means a complete or accurate representation of the profession) asks if respondents are male or female (Rosa & Henke, 2017). In addition to erasing anybody who is not one of these two things, this question does not provide information on whether respondents are trans or gender diverse. And yet, we are here: all four of the authors of this chapter are trans people who work …

Assessing Seismic Hazard In Western Kentucky And At The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant: An Overview Of The Issues, Mitigation Strategies, And The Research Conducted By The Kentucky Geological Survey, Zhenming Wang, Seth Carpenter
Bulletin--KGS
The exposure of homes, infrastructure, and critical facilities in western Kentucky, including the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), to potential strong seismic shaking from the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) has been a major impetus for decades of effort to characterize seismic hazards by the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS). The purpose of this report is to provide 1) a summary of the earthquake hazards that affect Kentucky and KGS’s ongoing earthquake research, including seismic monitoring, 2) background on the types of seismic hazards in general and how they are quantified in seismic hazard assessments, including strengths and weaknesses of the …
