High Dimensional Data Analysis And Visualization To Demonstrate Compliance, Alex Eklund

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

High Dimensional Data Analysis and Visualization to Demonstrate Compliance Authors Ms. Alex Eklund - United States - TRC Abstract Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) are powerful statistical techniques that can be used to evaluate high dimensional groundwater data generated throughout coal combustion residual (CCR) monitoring programs. These techniques are particularly useful in assessing unanticipated changes in groundwater quality and distinguishing sources of CCR impacts. These methods offer several benefits in the analysis and interpretation of data through: 1) dimensionality reduction and visualization, reducing the dimensionality of the dataset to more easily visualize and make correlations in …

Paper_Using Interim Storage To Better Align Harvesting And Beneficiation Timelines, Ethan Bond

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

With environmental sustainability increasing in priority, a number of beneficiation technologies have entered the market since the Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Rule took effect. While beneficiation providers offer an attractive solution to the previously regulated and newly regulated units facing closure, the timelines associated with beneficiation are often less attractive considering the strict regulatory deadlines imposed by the CCR Rule. Incorporating environmentally safe interim storage with traditional harvesting and beneficiation offers a potential solution to maintaining regulatory compliance while allowing for sustainable reuse of CCR. In this presentation we’ll explore considerations when looking at interim storage options, outline the various …

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Leveraging Data to Build an Effective Quality Assurance Program Authors Ms. DEANNA AUNGST - United States - Environmental Standards Ms. Danielle Coles - United States - Environmental Standards Abstract Beyond the standard field measurements and analytical results typically stored in a database or spreadsheet, capturing the data around the delivery, quality, timeliness, and status of that data can enable managers to understand the successes or stumbling points of their programs. Tracking the metadata of each deliverable, as well as each task associated with them, provides a non-biased assessment of how your program is working. Having this information available also allows …

Geochemical Assessment To Support Evaluation Of Remedy Options At Ccr Units, Jim Finley, Paul Thomas, John Griggs May 2024

Geochemical Assessment To Support Evaluation Of Remedy Options At Ccr Units, Jim Finley, Paul Thomas, John Griggs

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Developing closure and groundwater remedy strategies for CCR facilities requires broad investigation into material properties, hydrology, surface and groundwater quality, human and ecological risk among others. The inorganic constituents commonly associated with CCR materials are also chemically reactive with minerals contained in underlying unconsolidated materials. Essential information about the geochemical properties of unconsolidated material includes identification of reactive mineralogy, the distribution of Appendix IV constituents among mineral fractions through selective extraction, and quantification of the cation exchange capacity of clays. Results of geochemical assessment are incorporated in geochemical models used to predict response of the groundwater system to various remedies. …

Paper_Long-Term Conductivity Studies Of Low Permeability Concrete Containing Fly Ash, Neal Berke, Ali Inceefe, Kyle Stanish May 2024

Paper_Long-Term Conductivity Studies Of Low Permeability Concrete Containing Fly Ash, Neal Berke, Ali Inceefe, Kyle Stanish

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Durability design and service life modeling are increasingly used to demonstrate that concrete structures have a long service life, resisting corrosion. Fly ash is an important mixture component used in the concrete mixture to reduce the permeability of the concrete with time. In service life modeling, there are two ways that the inclusion of fly ash can increase the predicted life – the rate of permeability reduction with time, and the length of time that permeability decreases. The results of a long-term study of concrete conductivity (which is related to permeability) of various low-permeability concrete mixtures designed for use in …

Navigating Through Geochemical Modeling Uncertainties Related To Site Management And Cleanup Decisions, Scott Hensel May 2024

Navigating Through Geochemical Modeling Uncertainties Related To Site Management And Cleanup Decisions, Scott Hensel

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Navigating through Geochemical Modeling Uncertainties Related to Site Management and Cleanup Decisions Authors Mr. Scott Hensel - United States - Haley & Aldrich Inc. Abstract Geochemical modeling is a common and often essential approach used to understand the fate and transport of many inorganic constituents found at CCR sites. Uncertainties associated with key geochemical parameters may considerably influence the prediction of the fate of a CCR constituent. Because of regulation requirements, many CCR sites are in the process of selecting final remedies, which are often based on geochemical modeling results. Typically, thermodynamic databases downloaded with the program are used to …

Paper_Design, Cqa, And Legacy Rule Considerations For A Multi-Phased Ccp Unit Closure, Brendan Purcell, Brittany Bradley, Jason Obermeyer

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

This paper presents the case history of an interesting closure certification project at a coal combustion product (CCP) landfill that was progressively closed over a period of more than 30 years as CCPs reached final grades. While progressive closure is recognized as a good management practice, the evolution of an increasingly stringent web of state and federal regulations and construction quality assurance (CQA) requirements over the intervening 30 years necessitated retroactive demonstrations to verify compliance with present-day closure requirements. Additionally, earlier-than anticipated plant retirement meant that open areas of the landfill had not yet reached design grades, leaving low areas …

Chimney Drain Construction Lessons Learned, Jason Thaxton May 2024

Chimney Drain Construction Lessons Learned, Jason Thaxton

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

WM offers a unique perspective after building and operating several Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) landfills for clients as well as operating CCR monofills at several WM landfills. One feature that has been consistently incorporated into landfill design for our clients is chimney drains. While intended to collect water from exposed CCR surfaces and channel it to the leachate management system, their use requires precise installation and CCR placement to ensure functionality. In working with chimney drains during the construction and closure phases, WM has identified best practices in managing the effectiveness of chimney drains. In sharing our experience for managing …

Manage Unexpected Remediation Outcomes In Fractured Bedrock Geological Settings, Rong Yu

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Managing Unexpected Outcomes from Remediation in Fractured Bedrock Geological Settings – How a Revision in the Conceptual Site Model Helped Resolve Unforeseen Conditions Authors Dr. Rong Yu - United States - SynTerra Corporation Abstract To meet groundwater compliance goals established by federal and state regulatory agencies, active groundwater remediation, in addition to source control and monitored natural attention, is often needed. Groundwater extraction is a common hydraulic control measure to achieve plume containment and mass removal. However, in places with complicated geological settings such as fractured bedrock, the hydraulic stress introduced by pumping groundwater can lead to unexpected mobilization of …

Dewatering Pilot Tests For Geotechnical Investigation, Paul Schmall

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Dewatering Pilot Tests for Geotechnical Investigation Authors Dr. Paul Schmall - United States - Keller Abstract Pore water dewatering using wells, wellpoints, and other devices has become a standard tool for facilitating pond closure, both for improving stability and safety on previously saturated CCR surfaces, and for improving excavatability and general workability of CCR material. However, most pond geotechnical investigations are not designed to produce the parameters required to properly design a pore water dewatering system. Parameters such as well pumping yields, the CCR’s hydraulic conductivity, storativity, and the influence of native groundwater or surface water bodies must all be …
