Comparative Analysis Of Motors With Inner And Outer Reluctance Rotors And Pm Stators, Oluwaseun A. Badewa, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
This paper presents a comparison of special outer and inner reluctance rotor motor topologies with permanent magnet (PM) stators having toroidal AC windings. A systematic approach is taken to study and discuss the design geometries, the respective impact on performance, and adoption of technological advancements such as stator-only cooling and hair-pin winding for high slot fill factor. Parametric FEA models are developed for both topologies, and design of experiments (DoE)-based sensitivity analysis is used to study the effect of independent variables on specific performance metrics such as torque, motor loss, torque ripple, and power factor. Inner and outer rotor topologies …

Sensorless Control Of Low Inductance Coreless Afpm Machines For Fault-Tolerant Operation Of Propulsion Systems, Yaser Chulaee, Ali Mohammadi, Aaron M. Cramer, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
In motor-drive systems utilized in safety-critical applications and demanding conditions like electric aircraft propulsion systems, the reliability of the system is greatly affected by position sensors, given their susceptibility within the motor drive system. Consequently, there is a need to eliminate sensors in vector-controlled motor drives to decrease overall hardware complexity and expenses, bolster the mechanical durability and dependability of the drive system. In this paper, a fault-tolerant sensorless control system for low inductance coreless axial flux PM (AFPM) machines, integrated into electric aircraft propulsion systems, is introduced. The proposed control system spans a wide operating range, from zero to …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
In this paper, a fault-tolerant two-phase high power coreless axial flux PM (AFPM) machine with a modular structure is introduced. The performance of this machine, in terms of torque, power density, and efficiency, is compared with its three-phase counterpart configuration based on finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental results. The fault tolerance of these two configurations, considering the control systems, is also compared. A detailed power loss breakdown for the prototype two-phase and three-phase printed circuit board (PCB) stator coreless AFPM machines derived from experiments is presented, showcasing that the introduced fault-tolerant two-phase machine has comparable performance and efficiency, while …

High-Power Polyphase Pcb-Type Inductive Coupler For Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging, Donovin D. Lewis, Omer Onar, Lucas Gastineau, John F. Eastham, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
The cost and manufacturing difficulty of traditionally wound coils for wireless charging of electric vehicles has led to the exploration of alternative manufacturing for scalable deployment at a range of rated powers. A rotating-field polyphase wireless coupler is developed with balanced fully pitched coils which are not possible with conventional Litz wire. The usage of printed circuit board (PCB) technology is proposed for the innovative construction at large dimensions due to reduced cost, increased ease of manufacturability, and potential geometric customization compared to would coils. Design considerations specific to PCBs are detailed for wireless power transfer coils including advantages such …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
Axial-flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machines are well-suited for in-wheel traction in electric vehicles due to their compact structure and higher torque density. This paper presents a large-scale design optimization of an axial-flux permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) of the MAGNUS type with a double stator configuration. The active stator features double layer wound coils, while the passive stator is unwound but has a similar profile. The reference design employs a rotor with permanent magnets (PMs) arranged in a spoke-type field intensifying pattern, providing high flux concentration. Design optimization was performed using 3-D electromagnetic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the Differential …

On The Optimal Design Of Coreless Afpm Machines With Halbach Array Rotors For Electric Aircraft Propulsion, Matin Vatani, Yaser Chulaee, Ali Mohammadi, David R. Stewart, John F. Eastham, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
This paper presents and evaluates the optimal design of a coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor for electric aircraft propulsion. Ferromagnetic cores are entirely removed from the machine’s structure to improve the specific power density and efficiency. An approach for envelope design optimization of the proposed motor is introduced, considering the polarity as an independent variable and employing an evolutionary algorithm and 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In addition to the proposed electric motor’s electromagnetic performance, fault-tolerant capability and thermal management are considered in the optimization procedure. The optimization results and similar studies from power electronic and thermal management …

Collaborative biostatistics units within universities and academic medical centres operate under a wide range of different funding models; common to many of these models is the challenge of allocating time to activities that are not linked to a specific research project, such as professional development, mentorship and administrative tasks. The purpose of this paper is to describe a proposed model for ‘flexible funding’, that is, funding that is not linked to a specific research project, within a collaborative biostatistics unit and to detail the benefits and challenges associated with the proposed model. We present results from a qualitative study representing …

Statistical collaboration requires statisticians to work and communicate effectively with nonstatisticians, which can be challenging for many reasons. To identify common themes and lessons for working smoothly with nonstatistician collaborators, two focus groups of primarily academic collaborative statisticians were held. We identified qualities of collaborations that tend to yield fruitful relationships and those that tend to yield nothing (or worse, with one or both parties being dissatisfied). The initial goal was to share helpful knowledge and individual experiences that can facilitate more successful collaborative relationships for statisticians who work within academic statistical collaboration units. These findings were used to design …

Organic cucurbit growers face many challenges to production including insect pests, insect-vectored diseases, and non-vectored diseases. While Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI) -listed pesticides underperform at suppressing pests and diseases, some alternative pest management strategies hold promise, but little research exists on their cost-effectiveness. We compared the efficacy of mesotunnel systems (nylon-mesh netting row covers deployed over bent metal hoops) and OMRI-listed pesticides (fungicides and insecticides) on acorn squash across 2 years. During the early part of the season, before row covers were removed for pollination, we found 1.7 (2020) and 0.3 (2021) times more cucumber beetles in the uncovered …

Motivation: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are increasingly popular for population genomics and inferring ancestry for individuals of unknown origin. Because large SNP datasets are impractical for rapid and routine analysis, diagnostics rely on panels of highly informative markers. Strategies exist for selecting these markers, however, resources for efficiently evaluating their performance are limited for non-model systems.
Results: snpAIMeR is a user-friendly R package that evaluates the efficacy of genomic markers for the cluster assignment of unknown individuals. It is intended to help minimize panel size and genotyping effort by determining the informativeness of candidate diagnostic markers. Provided genotype data …

Non-native lady beetle species have often been introduced, with variable success, into North America for bio- logical control of aphids, scales, whiteflies, and other agricultural pests. Two predatory lady beetle species, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata and Hippodamia variegata, both originating from Eurasia, were first discovered near Montreal, Quebec, in North America in 1968 and 1984, respectively, and have since expanded into northeastern North America and the midwestern United States. In this study, we estimate the range-wide pop- ulation structure, establishment and range-expansion, and recent evolutionary history of these lady beetle species using reduced-representation genotyping-by-sequencing via ddRADseq. In addition, we quantified the responses …

RNA interference (RNAi) is more efficient in coleopteran insects than other insects. StaufenC (StauC), a coleopteran-specific double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-binding protein, is required for efficient RNAi in coleopterans. We investigated the function of StauC in the intracellular transport of dsRNA into the cytosol, where dsRNA is digested by Dicer enzymes and recruited by Argonauts to RNA-induced silencing complexes. Confocal microscopy and cellular organelle fractionation studies have shown that dsRNA is trafficked through the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in coleopteran Colorado potato beetle (CPB) cells. StauC is localized to the ER in CPB cells, and StauC-knockdown caused the accumulation of dsRNA in the …

PLK1 (Polo-like kinase 1) plays a critical role in the progression of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Recent studies have unveiled that targeting PLK1 improves the efficacy of immuno- therapy, highlighting its important role in the regulation of tumor immunity. Nevertheless, our understanding of the intricate interplay between PLK1 and the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains incomplete. Here, using genetically engineered mouse model and single- cell RNA-seq analysis, we report that PLK1 promotes an immunosuppressive TME in LUAD, characterized with enhanced M2 polarization of tumor associated macrophages (TAM) and dampened antigen presentation process. Mechanistically, elevated PLK1 coin- cides with increased secretion of CXCL2 …

Androgen has long been recognized for its pivotal role in the sexual dimorphism of cardiovascular diseases, including aortic aneurysms (AAs), a devastating vascular disease with a higher prevalence and fatality rate in men than in women. However, the mechanism by which androgen mediates AAs is largely unknown. Here, we found that male, not female, mice developed AAs when exposed to aldosterone and high salt (Aldo-salt). We revealed that androgen and androgen receptors (ARs) were crucial for this sexually dimorphic response to Aldo-salt. We identified programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), an immune checkpoint, as a key link between androgen and …

Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a resilient forage crop due to its drought tolerance and adaptation to low-N environments. Sorghum produces a cyanogenic glucoside called dhurrin. The breakdown of dhurrin leads to the release of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which can cause cyanide toxicity in livestock. Dhurrin-free sorghum lines have been developed through chemical mutagenesis by mutagenizing the gene for the first enzyme, CYP79A1, in the biosynthetic pathway. The CYP79A1 mutation was bred into sorghum lines to create a dhurrin-free experimental hybrid. Grazing preference of ewes was assessed when allocated to the dhurrin-free hybrid and three commercial hybrids. Near isogenic …
