Analysis Of Time-Independent Consolidation Data, E. Gregory Mcnulty, Tommy C. Hopkins, C. Thomas Gorman Jan 1978

Analysis Of Time-Independent Consolidation Data, E. Gregory Mcnulty, Tommy C. Hopkins, C. Thomas Gorman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The one-dimensional laboratory consolidation test developed by Terzaghi permits deformation and drainage only in the vertical direction. The stress-strain characteristics of data obtained from this test are normally studied using a semilogarithmic graphical representation, that is, vertical strain or void ratio is plotted as a function of the logarithm of effective stress. Such a representation permits an analysis of the stress history and compressibility characteristics of soils. Knowledge of these material characteristics is of great practical value in the prediction of settlement associated with loading where the effects of lateral consolidation may be neglected.

Development Of A Traffic Conflict Procedure For Kentucky, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this report was to develop a procedure for the collection and use of traffic conflict data. Data were collected at five intersections to determine characteristics of conflicts. Observer reliability was found to be excellent. Traffic volumes accounted for only about 30 percent of the variation in numbers of conflicts. At one intersection, repeatability of conflict numbers, rates, and types was found to be very good. A total of 6,535 conflicts and 2,957 benign weaves were observed at the test sites.

Based on the data, recommendations were made for collecting data during three peak hours at each site. …

Santa Fe Industries, Inc. V. Green: An Analysis Two Years Later, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr. Jan 1978

Santa Fe Industries, Inc. V. Green: An Analysis Two Years Later, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In 1977, the Supreme Court decided Santa Fe Industries, Inc. v. Green. Although the outcome of that decision should have surprised no one, since the trend of the Court clearly had been to constrict the scope of the federal securities legislation, the case was a major decision that will have a substantial impact on the development of corporate law in this country. Indeed, it may turn out to be one of the most significant corporate cases decided by the Supreme Court in recent years. Since by this point the dust has settled from the case, it seems appropriate to …

Heating The 9th Street Interchange: Construction And Initial Operation, Wm. Vernon Azevedo, Assaf S. Rahal, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The 9th-Street interchange was designed and constructed with an automated, electrical heating system for snow and fee removal. This report describes the heating system, its construction, and initial operation. The heating system was capable of keeping the interchange free of ice and snow accumulation. The average daily slab temperature fell below 32°F (0°C) on only one occasion. The average cost of electrical power for heating the interchange was $905 per day.

The Response Of Various Soil Strength Indices To Changing Water Content And Bulk Density, Larry G. Wells, O. Treesuwan Jan 1978

The Response Of Various Soil Strength Indices To Changing Water Content And Bulk Density, Larry G. Wells, O. Treesuwan

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Various soil strength parameters were measured in the laboratory using a bevameter and a recording soil cone penetrometer. Measurements were made at various levels of soil bulk density and water content. Results were discussed in terms of similar published analyses. Two dissimilar methods of predicting vehicular tractive performance were compared and evaluated in terms of potential utility with respect to prediction of soil trafficability.

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate Jan 1978

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted on large field cores to determine the relationship between drainage volume and water table depth for five soils. The measured drainage volumes were less than predicted from the soil water characteristics for three soils, but were in good agreement for the other two. Drainable porosities were calculated from both theoretical and experimental drainage volume-water table depth relationships by assuming that the unsaturated zone is essentially 'drained to equilibrium, with the water table. The experimental drainable porosities thus obtained were less than predicted.

Drainable porosities for drainage in two-dimensions were calculated from experimental results for one-dimension by assuming …

Foliar Fertilization Of Soybeans - 1977, Lloyd W. Murdock, Preeda Boon-Long, Dennis B. Egli, Kenneth L. Wells

Agronomy Notes

Field investigations on the effect of foliar fertilization were continued on soybeans during 1977. Results from our 1976 studies have previously been published.

In 1976 we tested a material produced by TVA. We used the same TVA-material in 1977 and in addition, included a commercially available product (Foliantm, manufactured by Allied Chemical Corporation).

Response Of Different Crops To Various Rates Of Furnace Ash Applied As A Soil Amendment, Lloyd W. Murdock, George Everette Jan 1978

Response Of Different Crops To Various Rates Of Furnace Ash Applied As A Soil Amendment, Lloyd W. Murdock, George Everette

Agronomy Notes

Furnace ash from coal fired electrical generating steam plants has increased greatly in the last decade with the increased demand for electricity and increased restrictions on air pollution. The large volumes of ash are presenting disposal and containment problems for management of electrical generating plants. Property adjacent to the generating plants has been exposed to fly ash settling from the smoke stacks and ash over flowing from holding structures. The effects of the material on the land and its production are unknown and concern property owners.

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin Jan 1978

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin

KWRRI Research Reports

The possibility that pollution might deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and intensify solar UV at the earth's surface focuses attention on the role of solar UV in the various ecosystems at the earth's surface. Previous studies suggested that solar UV might contribute to bacterial die off in wastewater and the studies reported here were directed toward elucidating the action of solar UV in "natural" waters.

It has been assumed that solar UV action on aquatic ecosystems can be evaluated (using proper models) on the basis of the following four independently measurable quantities: I) the intensity of solar UV at the …

Hydrology And Water Quality In The Central Kentucky Karst: Phase Ii Part A: Preliminary Summary Of The Hydrogeology Of The Mill Hole Sub-Basin Of The Turnhole Spring Groundwater Basin, James F. Quinlan, Donald R. Rowe Jan 1978

Rowe

KWRRI Research Reports

Water from upland areas flows to small ephemeral and perennial springs that feed sinking streams that are tributary to low-order cave streams. These cave streams, also recharged by diffuse percolation, are part of a dendritic network in which intermediate-order streams join high-order streams that flow to major trunk streams. The trunk in the Mill Hole Sub-basin flows across the bottom of a large karst window, Mill Hole, and joins the trunk of the Patoka Creek Sub-basin. Their combined discharge bifurcates, flows around the collapsed central core of a larger karst window, Cedar Sink, and re-joins to flow as one to …

The Hidden Tax Trap Of I.R.C. Section 6672, Stephen J. Vasek Jr. Jan 1978

The Hidden Tax Trap Of I.R.C. Section 6672, Stephen J. Vasek Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Two recent decisions of the United States Supreme Court examined section 6672 of the Internal Revenue Code. In Slodov v. United States, the Court expressed its views on the personal liability of business managers for unpaid taxes on employee wages. Discharging such liability because of the personal bankruptcy of the business manager was considered in United States v. Sotelo. The focal point of these cases—section 6672 of the Internal Revenue Code—provides for the potential liability of business managers for the employees’ share of taxes on wages (hereinafter trust fund taxes).

Although Slodov and Sotelo are helpful in understanding …
