Directionality And The Processing Of Contracted Auxiliaries, Gregory Stump
Directionality And The Processing Of Contracted Auxiliaries, Gregory Stump
Linguistics Faculty Publications
In a recent paper on the status of morphology in a generative theory of grammar, Zwicky (1982a) has argued “that processes of cliticization and readjustment together constitute a component of grammatical description in any language, a component related to others by strict principles of precedence…that syntactic rules, as a set, can feed or bleed rules of cliticization/readjustment (but not vice versa)” (Zwicky 1982b:51). Here, I shall consider the question of whether such an assumption of strict directionality can be maintained in a theory of language processing, in which generative rules of syntax and cliticization are replaced with rules of parsing …

A Comparative Negligence Checklist To Avoid Future Unnecessary Litigation, John M. Rogers, Randy Donald Shaw
A Comparative Negligence Checklist To Avoid Future Unnecessary Litigation, John M. Rogers, Randy Donald Shaw
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Systems of comparative negligence, whereby the negligence of a plaintiff serves to reduce rather than to preclude tort recovery in negligence, have been adopted in thirty-nine states. The common law rule that contributory negligence is an absolute bar to recover is still the law in Kentucky, although modified by the doctrine of “last clear chance.” Kentucky may soon join the trend toward comparative negligence, however. In the last legislative session, bills to adopt comparative negligence were introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. A hearing on this subject was held by the Interim Judiciary and Civil Procedure …

Geologic Descriptions And Coal Analyses For 1982 Coal Drilling In The Daniel Boone National Forest, Eastern Kentucky, Raymond R. Bergeron, James C. Cobb, Ernie R. Slucher, Richard A. Smath
Information Circular--KGS
This report contains core descriptions, lithologic logs, and analyses of coal from 21 stratigraphic test holes drilled in 1982 in the Daniel Boone National Forest, including the Redbird Purchase Unit, in eastern Kentucky.
The test holes ranged in depth from 85 to 1,988 feet and averaged about 700 feet. A total of 89 coal samples were analyzed. Results of analyses (on the as-received basis) showed the following ranges: ash, 2.37 to 28.8 percent; sulfur, 0.3 to 8.4 percent; and Btu, 9,017 to 14,550 per pound.
Legal Ethics And Class Actions: Problems, Tactics And Judicial Responses, Richard H. Underwood
Legal Ethics And Class Actions: Problems, Tactics And Judicial Responses, Richard H. Underwood
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Perhaps no procedural innovation has generated more controversy than the class action. As Professor Arthur Miller has observed, debate over “class action problem[s]” has raged at several different levels. For example, opponents and proponents of class actions disagree on whether such actions produce socially desirable results in an economical fashion and whether an already overburdened judiciary can handle the additional supervisory demands of the class action. Recently, a somewhat more ideological dialogue has addressed the merit of publicly funded class actions. Such questions arise only indirectly in the context of class action litigation. However, a certain hostility toward class actions …

Kentucky Law Survey: Criminal Procedure, William H. Fortune
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Survey covers significant criminal procedure decisions of the Kentucky appellate courts for the period July 1, 1980, to July 1, 1982. It does not include cases construing the penal code or noteworthy decisions in the Kentucky law of evidence. The author has selected the most important criminal procedure cases for treatment in the text; a number of significant cases are summarized in footnotes.

Sandstone As A Construction Material Ky 80, Hazard To Watergap, Gary W. Sharpe, Herbert F. Southgate, David L. Allen, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
KY 80 (Hazard to Watergap) was constructed using abundantly available crushed sandstone. The pavements were designed to have adequate load-carrying capibilities and stability but were considered to be experimental (see Figure 1). It was intended that performance would be monitored and that undesirable features and performance would be identified and studied. Such surveillance was discontinued before construction was completed.
Recently, the need has arisen for testing and evaluation of some of the experimental sections. Some spalls, scuffs, and artesian water have been observed. Excessive water has appeared in the shoulder, median, and mainline. There has been at least one spot …
Pharmacokinetics And Protein Binding Of Morphine In Horses, Joan Combie, Thomas E. Nugent, Thomas Tobin
Pharmacokinetics And Protein Binding Of Morphine In Horses, Joan Combie, Thomas E. Nugent, Thomas Tobin
Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications
Morphine could be detected in horses dosed with 0.1 mg of drug/kg of body weight for up to 48 hours in blood and 144 hours in urine. This dose of morphine elicited no observable effects and is a suggested analgesic dose. Computer analysis revealed that a 3-compartment open system was the best fitting model with a serum half life of 87.9 minutes and a urine half life of 101.1 minutes. Binding to equine serum proteins was linear over a drug concentration range of 3.88 x 10-5M to 3.50 x 10-aM and averaged 31.6%. In RBC-partitioning experiments, 78.1 % of the …

Mechanical And Engineering Properties Of A Cherty Paleozoic Material, Robert C. Deen, David L. Allen, Tommy C. Hopkins
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In September 1982, Research Report UKTRP-82-16 was issued to document the sampling of a cherty Paleozoic material from a test pit on Divide Cut Section 3A of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Results of laboratory testing of the samples were also reported.
Subsequent to the issuance of Report UKTRP-82-16, additional testing and analyses have been completed. The purpose of this report is to document the results of those tests and analyses.

We study the spectroscopic characteristics of low ionization nuclear emission-line regions (Liners) in galaxies, and compare them with other active galactic nuclei. We show the results of new, extensive photoionization model calculations and use them to investigate line ratio diagrams, such as [O III] λ5007/Hβ versus [O II] λ3727/[O III] λ5007, and [O I] λ6300/[O III] λ5007 versus [O III] λ3727/[O III] λ5007. On the diagrams broad line objects, Seyfert 2 galaxies, and Liners form a continuous smooth sequence of decreasing ionization parameter. This suggests a common origin for line excitation in …
