Performance Of Tall Fescue Varieties [1984], Robert C. Buckner, Paul B. Burrus Ii, Nelson Gay, James A. Boling, Garry D. Lacefield Mar 1984

Performance Of Tall Fescue Varieties [1984], Robert C. Buckner, Paul B. Burrus Ii, Nelson Gay, James A. Boling, Garry D. Lacefield

Agronomy Notes

The objective of the tall fescue breeding program is the development of varieties characterized by superior nutritive value (including reduced contents of perloline and loline alkaloids and the fungal endophyte, Epichloe typhina, (Acremonium coenophialum), palatability, disease resistance, and adaptation through the utilization of intergeneric and interspecific hybrid derivatives of ryegtass and tall fescue species. Varieties previously released from the breeding program were Kentucky 31, Kenwell; and Kenhy. Johnstone tall fescue, developed cooperatively by the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA-ARS, was released March 1, 1982, as a new variety. Johnstone is characterized as having low levels of perloline alkaloid and …

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1982), Kenneth R. Agent Mar 1984

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1982), Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The primary objective of this study was to determine average accident statistics in Kentucky for 1982. These statistics could then be used in Kentucky's high-accident location identification program. The 1982 data were combined with 1980 and 1981 data to calculate more long-term accident statistics. Average accident rates were calculated using several methods of classifying highways. A series of tables was prepared giving criteria that could be used to determine if specific locations have accident problems.

Periodic Nondestructive Evaluation Of In-Service Metal Bridges, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Robert C. Deen Mar 1984

Periodic Nondestructive Evaluation Of In-Service Metal Bridges, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Metal bridges are subject to in-service fracture problems mainly caused by fatigue. This report considers the prevention of bridge failure by the performance of periodic nondestructive evaluations. Differences in visual and other nondestructive inspect ions are discussed. The use of preliminary inspection strategies for proper testing also is presented. The suitability of common types of nondestructive testing for bridge inspections also are included.

Root Knot Nematode In Gardens And Commercial Vegetables, John R. Hartman, William C. Nesmith Mar 1984

Root Knot Nematode In Gardens And Commercial Vegetables, John R. Hartman, William C. Nesmith

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

The root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.) causes damage by its feeding and reproduction on plant roots. There are several pathogenic species of this nematode but the two most commonly found in Kentucky are the southern root knot nematode, M. incognita and the northern root knot, M. hapla. These nematodes can attack numerous plants including vegetables, fruits, field crops, ornamentals and common weeds. Frequently, Meloidogyne interacts with other plant pathogens to form a disease complex in which the resulting disease is much more severe than that caused by either component alone. These nematodes are particularly serious when high populations …

Use Of Urea For Crop Production In Kentucky, Wilbur W. Frye Mar 1984

Use Of Urea For Crop Production In Kentucky, Wilbur W. Frye

Soil Science News and Views

Current trends indicate that urea will become the major source of solid and liquid N fertilizer in the future. Although urea has several advantages over other N fertilizers, especially in manufacturing, transporting, and marketing, there are some potential agronomic problems that farmers should keep in mind when using urea.

Thickness Design Procedure For Portland Cement Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen Mar 1984

Thickness Design Procedure For Portland Cement Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Past experience in Kentucky indicated that thickness designs using portland cement concrete best agreed with criterion used in the Portland Cement Association's design method for 2 or 3 million EAL's or less. For EAL's greater than 3 million, past experience best agreed with criterion developed from the AASHO Road Test.

Research reported herein indicates the two criteria become asymptotic at approximately 2.5 million EAL's. The merger of the criteria is presented, and the combined criterion is coupled with the principal of equal work as defined in classical physics to produce thickness design curves for portland cement concrete pavements. Research has …

Thickness Design Curves For Portland Cement Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen Feb 1984

Thickness Design Curves For Portland Cement Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Past experience indicates that thickness designs using portland cement concrete best agree with criterion used in the Portland Cement Association's design method for 18-kip EAL of 2 to 3 million or less. For EALs greater than 2 to 3 million, past experience best agrees with criterion developed from the AASHO Road Test. Research herein indicates the two criterion become asymptotic to each other at approximately 2.5 million EAL. For a variation in thickness and elastic moduli in portland cement concrete, dense-graded aggregate, and sub grade elastic modulus, research indicates that a general conic equation (included herein) very closely duplicates the …

Novel Method Of Administering Β-Blockers And Novel Dosage Forms Containing Same, Anwar A. Hussain

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

The invention provides a novel method of administering selected known adrenergic β-receptor blocking agents, such as dichloroisoproterenol, pronethalol, sotalol and alprenolol, which are of use in the treatment of angina pectoris, arrhythmias, hypertension and other cardiac conditions, and migraine. The invention further provides novel dosage forms of those β-blockers which are adapted for nasal administration and which include solutions, suspensions, gels and ointments.

A Membrane-Organic Phase Oxidation Process For The Destruction Of Toxic Organics In Hazardous Wastewaters, Charles E. Hamrin Jr., Dibakar Bhattacharyya, William K. Glynn Jan 1984

A Membrane-Organic Phase Oxidation Process For The Destruction Of Toxic Organics In Hazardous Wastewaters, Charles E. Hamrin Jr., Dibakar Bhattacharyya, William K. Glynn

KWRRI Research Reports

The examination of the extraction/oxidation of organic solutes in a two phase oxidation process was undertaken to discern the important parameters and the process mechanism of this system. Several parameter were adjusted to measure their effect on the disappearance rate of each organic from the water phase. The water to PFD volume ratio proved to be the most sensitive parameter affecting the disappearance rate, although temperature was also significant. Comparison with one phase oxidation systems demonstrated that the water/PFD system improved on the reduction of organics from the water phase. B-napthol oxidation increased over 50% in a 2/6 water/PFD volume …
