Inability Of Mitogen-Activated Lymphocytes Obtained From Patients With Malignant Primary Intracranial Tumors To Express High Affinity Interleukin 2 Receptors, Lucinda H. Elliott, W. H. Brooks, T. L. Roszman
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Patients with primary malignant brain tumors manifest a variety of abnormalities in cell-mediated and humoral immunity. Diminished T cell reactivity has been shown in these patients to be linked to deficiencies in interleukin 2 (IL-2) production that cannot be overcome by exogenous IL-2. In this study, specific binding of radiolabeled IL-2 to PHA-stimulated lymphocytes from brain tumor patients demonstrates that the number of high affinity interleukin 2 receptors (IL-2R) is greatly reduced. FACS analysis indicates that the relative density of the p55 protein (Tac protein) is lower on the mitogen-activated lymphocytes obtained from patients than on comparably treated lymphocytes from …
Automated Harvesting Of Burley Tobacco Ii. Evaluation Of System Performance, Larry G. Wells, George B. Day V, Timothy D. Smith
Automated Harvesting Of Burley Tobacco Ii. Evaluation Of System Performance, Larry G. Wells, George B. Day V, Timothy D. Smith
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
A prototype system for fully automated harvesting of burley tobacco has been developed and tested. Three years of field testing has shown that mechanical losses associated with the system were only slightly higher than via conventional methods. The system performed reliably at a sustained harvesting rate of approximately 1.4 ha/day (3.4 acre/day), while indicating that a rate of 2 ha/day (5 acre/day) should be easily achievable. The system is operated by two workers and reduces conventional labor requirement by approximately 80-85%.

Automated Harvesting Of Burley Tobacco I. System Development, Larry G. Wells, George B. Day V, Timothy D. Smith
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
A fully automated system for harvesting and handling mature buriey tobacco has been developed. This article identifies the operations essential to this harvesting concept and describes the development of the mechanisms by which they were accomplished. The system detaches, inverts and places mature plants into portable holders for air curing under waterproof covering without requiring any manual handling of the crop. Manual labor currently required to harvest buriey tobacco would be reduced by 80-85% and the system would eliminate the drudgery associated with manual handling. The harvesting system has an approximate capacity of 1.4 to 2.0 ha/day (3.5 to 5.0 …
Primary Antibody Responses To Thymus-Independent Antigens In The Lungs And Hilar Lymph Nodes Of Mice, S. Niranjan Goud, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada
Primary Antibody Responses To Thymus-Independent Antigens In The Lungs And Hilar Lymph Nodes Of Mice, S. Niranjan Goud, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
B lymphocytes from the pulmonary lymphoid tissues were stimulated with a variety of thymus-independent (TI) antigens by intratracheal (i.t.) immunization. Immune responses in the lungs and hilar lymph nodes (HLN), which are part of the localized lymphoid tissue, as well as in the spleen, the systemic lymphoid organ, were studied. Thus, primary i.t. immunization of mice with the TI-1 antigen trinitrophenyl-lipopolysaccharide (TNP-LPS) elicited both antigen-specific and polyclonal plaque-forming cell responses from HLN, lung, and splenic B lymphocytes. These responses appeared as early as 3 days after immunization and declined by day 7. Similar immunization with another TI-1 antigen, TNP-Brucella …

Louisa Bypass Experimental Project, Kamyar C. Mahboub, L. John Fleckenstein
Louisa Bypass Experimental Project, Kamyar C. Mahboub, L. John Fleckenstein
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In an effort to reduce rutting in the new Louisa Bypass in Lawrence County, Kentucky, a large-stone asphaltic base mix (Class K) was used in the base layer. A one-inch surface wearing course was used in this project, a polymer-modified asphalt was used in the surface course on half of the project. In order to facilitate subsurface drainage, a free draining subbase (No. 57's) was placed between the large-stone base and a dense-graded aggregate (DGA) layer. The drainage design was further enhanced by edge and median drains. Construction processes were monitored and photographed. Laboratory and field studies were conducted to …

Estimation Of Equivalent Axleloads Using Data Collected By Automated Vehicle Classification And Weigh-In-Motion Equipment, Herbert F. Southgate
Estimation Of Equivalent Axleloads Using Data Collected By Automated Vehicle Classification And Weigh-In-Motion Equipment, Herbert F. Southgate
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The primary objective of this research study was to modify the existing EAL estimation system to include data obtained using the Golden River Weigh-In-Motion system and automated vehicle classification equipment. Data are to be collected over a three-year cycle in accordance with the FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide. Having the capability of moving the portable weigh-in-motion scales to locations other than interstate sites permits the collection and analyses of specific data at sites on other highway functional classifications. Such data permits estimating both accumulated and future EAL requirements for that site. Such data permits estimating EAL requirements for sites on the …
Large-Stone Mixes For Reducing Rutting, Kamyar C. Mahboub
Large-Stone Mixes For Reducing Rutting, Kamyar C. Mahboub
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Large-stone mixes are becoming a very popular means for reducing rutting in flexible pavements. Aggregate interlock in large-stone mixes provides for very efficient dissipation of compressive and shear stresses that are known to be responsible for rutting and shoving in flexible pavements. This report documents mix design procedures and laboratory testing for characterization of rutting potential of large-stone asphalt mixes (LSAM) in Kentucky and particularly the Louisa Bypass project.
A series of large-stone aggregate gradations were studied. A promising aggregate gradation was selected in cooperation with Kentucky Department of Highway officials and representatives of the asphalt industry. Based upon the …
