Variation Of Seed Yield And Its Components In Common Vetch (Vicia Sativa L.) Under Different Conditions, E Acikgoz, I Turgut, H Ekiz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) is widely used as a seed or hay crop in Turkey. In humid coastal areas it is principally used fot hay or green herbage while in dry regions it is used mostly for seed. Roughly ground vetch seed is a popular concentrated feed and mixed with straw or cereal grain (A9ikg6z, 1988). Approximately 200.000 ha of common vetch are seeded every year in Turkey. It is sown mostly as a spring-seeded crop and is often subjected to severe heat and drought stress as the season progress. Yields are generally low with an average seed …

White Clover Seed Production In Two Mediterranean Environments Of Tuscany And Sardinia, P Bullitta, Simonetta Bullitta, A Pardini, S Piemontese, P P. Roggero, P Talamucci

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Purpose of the trialwas the identification of the most suitable varieties for white clover Trifolium repens L. seed production in Mediterranean environments. The main reason of this paper is to verify whether it is possible to produce seed of European varieties of white clover in south Europe considering that surfaces for seed production are decreasing in the northern European countries that were normally producers of white clover seed. The production of clover seed in southern Europe could advantageously replace the import from New Zealand and California.

Vegetative Propagation Of White Clover An Application In White Clover Seed Production, P C.D Newton, A I. Popay

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Establishment of white clover for agricultural purposes is invariably by seed. However, natural regeneration is almost entirely vegetative (Chapman, 1987), and flowering may be restricted to a small proportion of individuals within a population (Burdon, 1980) When white clover is present in the soil seedbank, there is potential for both intra- (between classes) and inter-varietal contamination of seed crops. Lancashire et al., (1985) have commented that genetic contamination of white clover seed is a world-wide problem. Volunteer seedlings may be removed from between the crop rows mechanically, but there remains an untreatable area close to the crop which is available …

Viability Of Stylosanthes Seeds As Affected By Storage Duration, J B. Brolmann, B J. Boman Apr 2025

Viability Of Stylosanthes Seeds As Affected By Storage Duration, J B. Brolmann, B J. Boman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Tropical legumes such as members of the genus Stylosanthes (sty lo) contribute to the improvement of pastures in the tropics and sub-tropics. Stylosanthes is usually established from seed. In Florida, seed of Stylosanthes has to be produced and collected before the onset of the winter since occasional frosts can damage seed-bearing vegetation. Therefore, early maturing Stylosanthes varieties have been developed. In stylo seed collections maintained for breeding or seed exchange purposes, maintenances of seed viability is critical. New pests or new diseases may require a renewed screening of stored accessions. It is important, then, that the seed source of this …

Modification Of Stolon Growth, Development And Flowering By Plant Growth Regulators In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) Seed Crops, A H. Marshall, D H. Hides

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Within the EEC the need to develop low cost less intensive systems of animal production has led to an increase in the importance of legumes generally, and white clover in particular. At present, annual white clover seed usage within the EEC is approximately 4,000 tonnes, however, the self sufficiency rate is expected to fall below 50 % by the end of the 1980s due principally to unpredictable seed yields which make it an unprofitable crop for seed growers. The main component of seed yield in white clover is the number of ripe inflorescences at harvest (Zaleski, 1961) however, the proportion …

Growth Regulator Effects On Seed Production Of Lotus Corniculatus L. And Lotus Uliginosus Schkuhr., J G. Hampton, Qingfeng Li, M D. Hare

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Seed yield in both Lotus corniculatus L. and Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr. (syn. L. pedunculatus Cav.) is considered to be limited by the indeterminate growth habit which results in a protracted (2-4 month) flowering period (Witchwoot, 1987; Li and Hill, 1988) leading to wide variation in seed maturity and seed loss through pod shattering. In both species seed yield is determined primarily by the number of inflorescences (Mos, 1983 ; Witchwoot, 1987), and thus treatments which alter or remove apical dominance, enhance shoot production or main stem branching thereby increasing inflorescence numbers (Clifford et al., 1983 ; Li and Hill, 1988), …

Plant Resources And Forage Seed Production In China, Dong Peihua

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

China is situated in the Eastern part of Asia ; from North to South it extends across the temperate and tropical zones. From East to West it has humid, semiarid, arid regions. There is no frost through the year in some part ofHainan Island, Yunnan, Guangdong and Taiwan provinces. Therefore plants grow the year round and there is a wide range of tropical species. The geographical and climatical differences resulted in rich grass resources. There are three hundred million hectares of natural pastures in Northern China, with more than 4000 plant species. These plants have different degrees of feeding value. …

Global demand for seafood has increased significantly in recent decades and is projected to continue rising. Aquaculture production has increased in the United States and globally to meet this demand, offering a relatively sustainable supplement to wild fish supplies. However, increased production further strains natural populations of pelagic species used to make fishmeal and fish oil into feedstocks, raising production costs and introducing safety concerns associated with fish consumption. A potential alternative feed ingredient is hemp, which can provide a cost-effective and nutritious feed for carnivorous fish. Moreover, hemp could meet the requirements for the final product to carry a …

Building modeling, specifically heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) load and equivalent energy storage calculations, represent a key focus for decarbonization of buildings and smart grid controls. In this paper, an ultra-fast one minute resolution Hybrid Machine Learning Model (HMLM) is proposed as part of a novel contribution in the field of residential physics-based smart home surrogate modeling. Emulation of white box models, or digital twins, with editable parameters through machine learning (ML) meta-modeling serves as an alternative to wide-spread experimental big data collection. The HMLM employs combined k-means clustering with multiple linear regression (MLR) to emulate minutely HVAC power …

What factors explain compliance with monetary damages awarded by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR)? States comply with the payment of monetary damages at higher rates than other forms of reparation. However, the higher compliance rate belies the significant variation in time to compliance with the payment of monetary awards. We identify three case-level characteristics that explain this variation: size of awards, number of victims, and victim identity. We test our hypotheses utilizing original datasets on compliance with monetary damages and case characteristics in IACtHR judgments through 2019, and find support for all three factors on time to compliance.

Following stroke, B cells enter brain regions outside of the ischemic injury to mediate functional recovery. Although B cells produce neurotrophins that support remote plasticity, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), it remains unclear which signal(s) activate B cells in the absence of infarct-localized pro-inflammatory cues. Activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-type receptor (NMDAR) subunits on neurons can upregulate mature BDNF (mBDNF) production from a pro-BDNF precursor, but whether this occurs in B cells is unknown. We identified GluN2A and GluN2B NMDAR subunits on B cells that respond to glutamate and mediate nearly half of the glutamate-induced Ca2+ responses in activated B …

The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) test diagnoses relative adrenal insufficiency (RAI) or critical illness–related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI). Initially, guidelines recommended corticosteroid/glucocorticoid (GC) therapy for septic patients with RAI, but later trials did not show a survival benefit, leading to updated guidelines that abandon targeting RAI or CIRCI. Recent studies with an RAI mouse model showed a clear survival benefit from GC therapy in mice with RAI, suggesting that inconclusive GC clinical trials might be due to issues with the ACTH test rather than targeting RAI. To investigate, we performed the ACTH test in septic mice. Interestingly, the ACTH test identified most …

Steroid receptors are ligand-induced transcription factors that have broad functions among all living animal species, ranging from control of sex differences, body weight, stress responses, and many others. Their binding to coregulator proteins is regulated by corepressors and coactivators that interchange upon stimulation with a ligand. Coregulator proteins are an imperative and understudied aspect of steroid receptor signaling. Here, we discuss steroid receptor basics from protein domain structures that allow them to interact with coregulators and other proteins, their essential functions as transcription factors, and other elemental protein–protein interactions. We deliberate about the mechanisms that coregulators control in steroid receptor …

Lysyl hydroxylase 2 (LH2) is highly expressed in multiple tumor types and accelerates disease progression by hydroxylating lysine residues on fibrillar collagen telopeptides to generate stable collagen cross links in tumor stroma. Here, we show that a galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase (GGT) domain on LH2 modified type-VI collagen (Col6) to promote lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) growth and metastasis. In tumors generated by LUAD cells lacking LH2 GGT domain activity, stroma was less stiff, and stable types of collagen cross links were reduced. Mass spectrometric analysis of total and glycosylated peptides in parental and GGT-inactive tumor samples identified Col6 chain α3 (Col6a3), a component …

The development of alternative energy sources is crucial for reducing reliance on fossil fuels, particularly for mobile applications such as personal electronics and transportation. This necessitates the advancement of battery materials based on abundant and inexpensive constituent elements. To achieve this requires investigating materials in a broader compositional and structural design space. Early transition metal oxides, including the intercalation electrode α − V2O5, however, the performance of V2O5 is hindered by phase transformations during battery cycling that lead to capacity fade and short device lifetimes. This study investigates the modification of V2 …

Abstract: Tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) regulates postnatal phosphate homeostasis, but its role in utero-placental phosphate availability remains poorly understood. Gilts were bred and hysterectomized on Day 60 or Day 90 of gestation (n = 6/day). Phosphate was less abundant in allantoic and amniotic fluids on Day 90 compared to Day 60. TNSALP protein was immunolocalized, and enzymatic activity was quantified and localized in endometrial and chorioallantois tissues. Day had no effect on TNSALP activity in the chorioallantois. In contrast, endometrial TNSALP activity was lower on Day 90 compared to Day 60. Phosphate abundance in allantoic fluid correlated positively with …

Background: The fungal pathogen Fusarium graminearum produces mycotoxins when it infects grains. This pathogen also infects hemp (Cannabis sativa L. containing less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol or THC). The presence of trichothecene mycotoxins like deoxynivalenol (DON) has not been reported in floral tissue of hemp infected with F. graminearum. The object of this study was to develop a method to extract three trichothecene mycotoxins—DON, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON), and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-ADON)—from hemp floral tissue, and to quantify the mycotoxins by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet detection. Results: Standards of nivalenol (NIV), DON-3-glucoside (D3G), DON, 3-ADON, and 15-ADON were separated from each other …

Motivation: Combining omics and images can lead to a more comprehensive clustering of individuals than classic single-view approaches. Among the various approaches for multi-view clustering, nonnegative matrix tri-factorization (NMTF) and nonnegative Tucker decomposition (NTD) are advantageous in learning low-rank embeddings with promising interpretability. Besides, there is a need to handle unwanted drivers of clusterings (i.e. confounders). Results: In this work, we introduce a novel multi-view clustering method based on NMTF and NTD, named INMTD, which integrates omics and 3D imaging data to derive unconfounded subgroups of individuals. According to the adjusted Rand index, INMTD outperformed other clustering methods on a …

PAS domains are ubiquitous sensory modules that transduce environmental signals into cellular responses through tandem PAS folds and PAS-associated C-terminal (PAC) motifs. While this conserved architecture underpins their regulatory roles, here we uncover a structural divergence in the metazoan PAS domain-regulated kinase (PASK). By integrating evolutionary-scale domain mapping with deep learning-based structural models, we identified two PAS domains in PASK, namely PAS-B and PAS-C, in addition to the previously known PAS-A domain. Unlike canonical PAS domains, the PAS fold and PAC motif in the PAS-C domain are spatially segregated by an unstructured linker, yet a functional PAS module is assembled …

Satellite cells comprise a small proportion of mononuclear cells in adult skeletal muscle. Despite their relative rarity, satellite cells have critical functions in muscle adaptation, particularly during prolonged exercise training. The mechanisms by which satellite cells mediate skeletal muscle responsiveness to physical activity throughout the lifespan are still being defined, but epigenetic regulation may play a role. To explore this possibility, we analyzed global DNA methylation patterns in muscle tissue from female mice that engaged in lifelong voluntary unweighted wheel running with or without satellite cells. Satellite cells were ablated in adulthood using the tamoxifen-inducible Pax7-DTA model. Compared to sedentary …
