Chronic pain is highly prevalent in older adults and is associated with elevated risk for disability and dementia. Subjective memory problems (SMPs) - self-rated memory difficulties - are also common and may serve as early indicators of functional decline. This study examined associations between SMPs and cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functioning among older adults with and without chronic pain. Data were drawn from 2365 participants in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study. Antibodies against the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E6 oncoprotein are promising biomarkers for the early detection of HPV-driven oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPSCC). Standard serologic testing is challenging in underserved regions with high HPV+OPSCC incidence. Dried blood spot (DBS) cards offer a low-resource alternative but remain unevaluated for HPV antibody detection. A total of 25 OPSCC patients who provided paired serum (venipuncture) and DBS (finger-prick) samples were recruited from the University of Kentucky. HPV16 antibodies (L1, E1, E2, E4, E6, E7) were measured using multiplex serology, quantified as median fluorescence intensity (MFI) and dichotomized using established cutoffs. Correlation between …

Highlights: What are the main findings? Prenatal cocaine exposure increases the risk of ADHD in preadolescence, with effects largely mediated through attention problems and impulsivity at 4–5 years of age. Male sex is an independent risk factor with a direct path to the ADHD diagnosis. What is the implication of the main finding? Screening for behavioral problems before 4 years of age in prenatal cocaine exposure would make possible early intervention to mitigate later diagnosis or severity of ADHD. INTRODUCTION: The Neighborhoods Study (TNS) is a novel investigation of adverse social exposome and brain health leveraging 22 Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs). TNS aims to understand if the adverse social exposures increase Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk. METHODS: TNS uses innovative methods to determine lifetime addresses of living (n = ≈ 3116) and brain bank cohorts (n = ≈ 8637). Addresses are linked to time-concordant adverse social exposome using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and summarized over time. Purpose: Pharmacoepidemiologic studies on deprescribing are challenging to implement, yet little guidance exists on methods to avoid bias and minimum reporting for replicability and appraisal. We developed consensus recommendations for the methods and reporting of observational studies that aim to examine the effects of deprescribing. Methods: We formed candidate recommendations based on our prior systematic review that methodologically appraised observational studies on deprescribing. We then conducted a two-round modified Delphi process with researchers working in deprescribing pharmacoepidemiology to refine, select, and reach consensus on recommendations for a checklist based on > 70% agreement of their importance. Increasing attention is being devoted to the study of phenotypic plasticity in social environments. However, much remains unknown about the selection pressures driving the evolution of social plasticity, as well as the pathways by which social plasticity may facilitate or constrain feedback between ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Here, we explore these questions using quantitative genetic models, providing general results regarding the causes of selection on social reaction norms, as well as their consequences for adaptive microevolution in fluctuating environments. During the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, migrations and the advent of working bronze alloy materials triggered profound cultural, social, and economic shifts across Central Europe. As a result of this processes, many communities with distinct archaeological and cultural characteristics emerged during the Central European Early Bronze Age (between circa 2200/2100 and 1600/1500 BC) in Central Europe, and with the Middle Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin (between 2000/1900 and 1500/1450 BC). Highlights: What are the main findings? Knockout of Plin2 in microglia reduces lipid droplet burden, while enhancing phagocytic clearance capacity. Transcriptomic, bioenergetic, and lipidomic analyses reveal that loss of Plin2 reprograms microglial metabolism toward reduced TAG storage and improved mitochondrial resilience. What are the implications of the main findings? Plin2 serves as a key regulator of microglial lipid droplet stability, metabolic flexibility, and immune function under Alzheimer’s-relevant stressors. Targeting Plin2 may represent a therapeutic strategy to alleviate lipid droplet-driven dysfunction and restore microglial performance in aging and neurodegeneration. Engineering education is at a critical juncture where supporting student mental health is essential for fostering persistence, equity, and the development of a resilient and innovative workforce. Yet, undergraduate engineering students experiencing mental health concerns are often unlikely to seek professional help. To identify factors that account for this gap in treatment, this project administered the Undergraduate Engineering Mental Health Help Seeking Instrument to 1903 engineering undergraduates across five institutions. Correlations and regression were used to examine the links between help-seeking intention and (a) help-seeking mechanisms (e.g., attitude, perceived norm, self-efficacy) and (b) beliefs about seeking help. Background: Rural communities in the United States face significant challenges in participating in clinical trials, despite being heavily impacted by opioid and injection drug use epidemics. Barriers such as transportation, stigma, and limited resources often deter rural people who use drugs (PWUD) from engaging in research. Discrete choice experiments (DCEs) can help identify trial design features that support participation by eliciting participant preferences. Long-term excessive intake of alcohol can cause serious damage to the liver, and the study of natural active ingredients with hepatoprotective effects is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of alcoholic liver injury. This study explored the ameliorative effects of high F-value oligopeptides (HFOPs) from Chlamys farreri, Pueraria lobata extract (PL), and their complex (HFOPs + PL) on alcoholic liver injury. Results showed HFOPs + PL significantly reduced alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) leakage, increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) activities, and decreased the production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and inflammatory factors in alcohol-induced HepG2 cells. …

The gonad is one of the major byproducts of sea cucumber. Four novel antioxidant peptides (NPWGQ, PGHPF, VPYPR and ATGPQGPAGQRGPAGPTGPTGPAG) were isolated and identified from sea cucumber gonad proteins through enzymatic hydrolysis and antioxidant activity-guided fractionation, bioinformatics approaches and in silico screening. These peptides demonstrated great free radical (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS))-scavenging activity and notable superoxide dismutase (SOD)-activation capacity. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation data suggested that these peptides could form strong binding with SOD through hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic interactions. This study evaluated the performance and energy and nutrient utilization of broiler chickens fed corn-soybean meal-based diets supplemented with a naturally fermented enzyme complex containing xylanase and phytase. This was evaluated using 300 one-day-old male Cobb broiler chicks in a randomized complete block design with five dietary treatments replicated 10 times with 6 chicks per replicate. Background: Feeding of human milk enhances infant health and survival over alternative feeding methods, but early cessation often occurs due to perceived or real insufficient milk supply. Moringa oleifera leaves are nutrient dense and may increase milk output. Objectives: We investigated the impact of maternal dried moringa leaf powder supplementation (moringa) on milk composition and output and infant and maternal health.
