Maternal Occupational Exposure To Organic Solvents And Noise: Maternal Effects And Infant Outcomes, Kristen Van Buren
Maternal Occupational Exposure To Organic Solvents And Noise: Maternal Effects And Infant Outcomes, Kristen Van Buren
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Introduction: Several maternal occupational exposures have not yet been studied for potential reproductive harm or have inconsistent findings in the literature. Despite the challenges, identification of potential risk factors, specifically reproductive toxicants, is necessary to mitigate and prevent adverse health outcomes for working mothers and their infants. The purpose of this study was to examine maternal occupational exposure to organic solvents and noise to small-for-gestational age (SGA) and preterm birth (PTB) among infants. Additionally, the study sought to examine maternal occupational exposure to noise and presence of gestational diabetes (GDM) and pregnancy-related hypertension among participant mothers.
Methods: The study population …

Potential Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Complications Associated With Obesity In Adult Women In The United States., Cassidy Taylor
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Abstract
The purpose of this project is to determine whether there is an association between socioeconomic factors and complications of obesity in adult women in the United States based on the national 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data.
Dependent variables were categorized as complications associated with obesity in adult, obese women. BRFSS items that referenced objective measures regarding chronic obesity-related complications included items such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and breast cancer diagnosis. Two measures relating to participants’ socioeconomic status were also used as independent variables. BRFSS items that referenced objective measures regarding socioeconomic status are educational attainment, …
Attitudes Towards Fentanyl Test Strips Among A Cohort Of People Who Use Drugs In Rural Kentucky, Alaina Murphy
Attitudes Towards Fentanyl Test Strips Among A Cohort Of People Who Use Drugs In Rural Kentucky, Alaina Murphy
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Background and aims Fentanyl-related overdoses have largely contributed to the nearly 500,000 opioid overdose deaths in the United States since 1999. Fentanyl test strips (FTS) are a new technology that is designed to help prevent these overdoses. People who use drugs (PWUD) can test their drug supply for fentanyl by placing the strip in a sample of the drug. However, access to FTS varies across the country. This variance is largely due to rural PWUD not having the same access to harm reduction programs, compared to urban settings. This study uses data on PWUD in rural Kentucky to evaluate attitudes …
Local Public Health System Comprehensiveness And Opioid Overdose Mortality, 2012-2018, Stephanie Courtney
Local Public Health System Comprehensiveness And Opioid Overdose Mortality, 2012-2018, Stephanie Courtney
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Background: Deaths due to opioid overdose are a significant public health burden in the United States. Studies suggest that local public health systems that perform a high number of essential activities where local health departments contribute to the delivery of the activities and promote increased partnership may positively influence population health outcomes such as overdose mortality. Studies have shown that comprehensive public health systems are associated with improved health outcomes, but this association has not been addressed in the context of opioid overdose deaths. Study Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the associations between local public health …
Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain
Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is among the most common lower limb musculoskeletal injuries impacting both the general and sport populations. Even more problematic is that approximately 70% of individuals who sustain an LAS develop residual deficits. Of that subgroup, roughly 40% develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). Chronic ankle instability is a clinical diagnosis defined by the presence of ongoing impairments following the initial LAS which may include perceived instability, pain, mechanical instability, and episodes of giving way during physical activity. Not all who sustain multiple ankle sprains or experience residual deficits fit the clinical diagnosis criteria for CAI; yet may …
Content Validation Of A Patient-Reported Outcome Measure For Pediatric Clients With Hand And Upper Extremity Impairment, Jenny M. Dorich
Content Validation Of A Patient-Reported Outcome Measure For Pediatric Clients With Hand And Upper Extremity Impairment, Jenny M. Dorich
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Occupational therapists and physical therapists practicing in hand therapy have adopted routine use of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) for evaluating treatment outcomes. However, the PROMs currently used in pediatric hand care are limited in clinical utility for the pediatric population. Thus, a need exists for developing a PROM that is tailored to the pediatric hand therapy population. The overarching purpose of this dissertation is to establish the content validity of a novel PROM for children with hand and upper extremity impairment – the Upper Extremity Life Impact Measure-Youth (UE LIM-Y).
This three-part dissertation applies published standards for PROM development …
The Experience Of Meditation, And Its Effects On Attention, For Adults With Stroke Or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Three-Part Dissertation With Qualitative And Quantitative Evidence, Cheryl Carrico
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Impairment of attention is common after stroke; is a defining characteristic of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and has been shown to correlate significantly with difficulties in daily life for individuals with these conditions. More research is needed to establish effective interventions addressing impaired attention in such cases. Meditation is not a standard-of-care intervention for this purpose but may have therapeutic potential. Meditation has been broadly defined as an activity which has self-regulation of attention as its main aim. In other words, it can be considered a training of attention. To shed light on the therapeutic potential of meditation, including …
The Utilization Of Physical Literacy To Understand Physical Activity In Individuals With A History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Rachel Renee Kleis
The Utilization Of Physical Literacy To Understand Physical Activity In Individuals With A History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Rachel Renee Kleis
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is common in physically active populations. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is commonly performed after injury in order to restore joint stability and knee function and return patients to desired levels of physical activity. However, not everyone will return to their pre-injury levels of sport after surgery and recent evidence reveals that individuals with a history of ACLR are less likely to meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. Specifically, previous literature has reported that individuals with a history of ACLR take fewer daily steps and participate in less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared to …
Increasing Social Inclusion For Children With Disabilities In Faith-Based Settings: A Four-Part Dissertation, Valerie Miller
Increasing Social Inclusion For Children With Disabilities In Faith-Based Settings: A Four-Part Dissertation, Valerie Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
The aim of this dissertation is to increase the body of research in occupational therapy about how to increase the social inclusion of children with disabilities in faith-based settings. Even since the advent of important legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act, which paved the way for community participation for individuals with disabilities, individuals with disabilities continue to face barriers to participating in society. Decreased inclusion for individuals with disabilities is seen throughout all sectors of society. One area of regular societal participation for many Americans is in faith-based settings such as churches, synagogues and temples. It has been reported …
Telehealth Readiness In Older Adults In Kentucky, Kristen Weidner
Telehealth Readiness In Older Adults In Kentucky, Kristen Weidner
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth became an increasingly widespread service delivery model. Not all populations, however, accessed telehealth services equally. Older adults were less likely to use telehealth during the pandemic, continuing a historical trend. These usage patterns persist despite evidence that telehealth could be a helpful service delivery option for this population. Researchers have explored how theoretical frameworks explain older adults’ decisions to use technology, but there is yet to be a measure of older adults’ readiness for telehealth technology. A validated, theory-backed tool of older adults’ perceptions about telehealth, prior to the health care encounter, could help clinicians …
The Effectiveness Of Handwriting Intervention On Handwriting And Spelling Outcomes Delivered Via Telehealth, Laura Bray
The Effectiveness Of Handwriting Intervention On Handwriting And Spelling Outcomes Delivered Via Telehealth, Laura Bray
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Across the United States, there has been a push to improve the literacy of our population, especially in the school systems. This has resulted in emphasizing reading skill development; however, literacy encompasses more than just reading. Literacy is the internal processes needed to create and understand contextualized visual, written, and verbal information. According to the Common Core State Standards, foundational literacy skills include reading, but also writing, listening, and speaking abilities. Handwriting is an area of literacy that is often forgotten, but has significant positive correlations to writing composition, spelling, and early reading skills. In fact, the Simple View of …
Implementation Of Physical Activity In Kentucky Public Schools: From Theory To Policy, Nancy Kearns
Implementation Of Physical Activity In Kentucky Public Schools: From Theory To Policy, Nancy Kearns
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Physical activity in schools improves academic performance and fitness measures in children. However, state policy supporting implementation of physical activity remains poor. Identifying specific barriers to implementing physical activity minutes in Kentucky public schools is pivotal in preserving the cognitive and physical health of our children. This is of particular interest as physical activity minutes remain low despite the positive effects of exercise on cognition. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide policymakers and school administrators a method of identifying current policies, attitudes and infrastructure that inhibit the implementation of physical activity minutes in public schools. Thus, the findings, …
Centrality And Transverse-Momentum Dependence Of Higher-Order Flow Harmonics Of Identified Hadrons In Au+Au Collisions At √𝑠𝑁𝑁=200 Gev, Star Collaboration
Centrality And Transverse-Momentum Dependence Of Higher-Order Flow Harmonics Of Identified Hadrons In Au+Au Collisions At √𝑠𝑁𝑁=200 Gev, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow 𝑣2, 𝑣3, and 𝑣4, respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons 𝜋, 𝑝, 𝐾, 𝜑, 𝐾𝑠, Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √𝑠𝑁𝑁=200 GeV. We observe similar 𝑣𝑛 trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for 𝑣2, 𝑣3, and 𝑣4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous …

Azimuthal Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries Of Inclusive Jets And Identified Hadrons Within Jets From Polarized 𝑝𝑝 Collisions At √𝑠 =200 Gev, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, 𝐴𝑁, for inclusive jets and identified “hadrons within jets” production at midrapidity from transversely polarized 𝑝𝑝 collisions at √𝑠 =200 GeV, based on data recorded in 2012 and 2015. The inclusive jet asymmetry measurements include 𝐴𝑁 for inclusive jets and 𝐴𝑁 for jets containing a charged pion carrying a momentum fraction 𝑧 >0.3 of the jet momentum. The identified hadron within jet asymmetry measurements include the Collins effect for charged pions, kaons, and protons, and the Collins-like effect for charged pions. The measured asymmetries are determined for several distinct kinematic …
Evidence For Nonlinear Gluon Effects In Qcd And Their Mass Number Dependence At Star, Star Collaboration
Evidence For Nonlinear Gluon Effects In Qcd And Their Mass Number Dependence At Star, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of back-to-back azimuthal correlations of di-𝜋0s produced at forward pseudorapidities (2.6 < 𝜂 < 4.0) in 𝑝 +𝑝, 𝑝+Al, and 𝑝+Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. We observe a clear suppression of the correlated yields of back-to-back 𝜋0 pairs in 𝑝+Al and 𝑝+Au collisions compared to the 𝑝 +𝑝 data. The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of transverse momentum suggests nonlinear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities. The larger suppression found in 𝑝+Au relative to 𝑝+Al collisions exhibits a dependence of the saturation scale 𝑄2/𝑠 on the mass number 𝐴. A linear scaling of the suppression with 𝐴1/3 is observed with a slope of −0.09 ±0.01.

Effects Of Voluntary Adolescent Intermittent Alcohol Exposure And Social Isolation On Adult Alcohol Intake In Male Rats, Cassie M. Chandler, Jakob D. Shaykin, Hui Peng, James R. Pauly, Kimberly Nixon, Michael T. Bardo
Psychology Faculty Publications
Initiating alcohol use in adolescence significantly increases the likelihood of developing adult alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, it has been difficult to replicate adolescent alcohol exposure leading to increased adult alcohol intake across differing preclinical models. In the present study, differentially housed male rats (group vs. single cages) were used to determine the effects of voluntary intermittent exposure of saccharin-sweetened ethanol during adolescence on adult intake of unsweetened 20% ethanol. Adolescent male rats were assigned to group- or isolated-housing conditions and underwent an intermittent 2-bottle choice in adolescence (water only or water vs. 0.2% saccharin/20% ethanol), and again in adulthood …

Almost half of social work students enter their program with a history of mental health diagnosis and exposure to multiple childhood traumas. Over half of students at four-year institutions are enrolled in one or more courses online, yet retention in online coursework is much lower than in in-person courses. As online programs continue to grow in the field of social work it becomes a vital requirement to address the psychosocial needs of online learners. The call of this capstone is to examine how universities and colleges of social work can meet the increasing need to improve course work and service …
Perinatal Substance Use Disorders And Co-Occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kaitlyn Dickens
Perinatal Substance Use Disorders And Co-Occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kaitlyn Dickens
DSW Capstone Projects
Pregnant and postpartum or perinatal women who experience Substance Use Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (SUD/PTSD) co-occurring are an underserved population and a gap can be observed in the research in terms of clinical presentation and treatment of SUD/PTSD among this population. Social work practitioners are at an increased probability of working with individuals who would identify as such. There are many psychosocial and health factors associated with untreated SUD/PTSD among perinatal women for both mother and baby.
Research suggests that the use of client centered approaches and narrative therapy is beneficial in working with those who experience PTSD. The …
Opioid Addiction In Rural America: The Transportation Need For Treatment Adherence, Jennifer Smith
Opioid Addiction In Rural America: The Transportation Need For Treatment Adherence, Jennifer Smith
DSW Capstone Projects
The opioid epidemic has continued to soar throughout the United States for over 20 years. While this epidemic knows no boundaries and affects all of America, rural communities have been drastically impacted by the number of persons suffering from this addiction, and the resulting staggering mortality rates. Rural populations face greater treatment barriers preventing patients from obtaining needed services as compared to other geographical locations. Patients face obstacles related to accessibility, availability, and stigmatization, placing them at higher risk for opioid misuse, abuse, and/or death. Even though this targeted population faces multiple complications in seeking treatment, transportation barriers are among …

Clinical Interventions For Developmental Trauma Disorder: How Evidence-Based Practice And Attachment Theory Can Inform Therapeutic Approach, Victoria Deveau
Clinical Interventions For Developmental Trauma Disorder: How Evidence-Based Practice And Attachment Theory Can Inform Therapeutic Approach, Victoria Deveau
DSW Capstone Projects
Approximately two-thirds of U.S. children and adolescents report having experienced a traumatic event. A posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis requires that the youth has directly experienced a traumatic event, witnessed a traumatic event occur to others, or learned that a traumatic event has occurred to someone close. The clinician is in a diagnostic quandary, however, when the youth presents with the PTSD hallmarks of hyperarousal, avoidance, and emotional dysregulation, in absence of such life experiences. The answer to this quandary lies in an understanding of developmental trauma disorder (DTD). Clinical interventions for DTD are the focus of this capstone.

Autonomous Self-Care: A Means To Mitigate Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Clinical Social Workers, Jessica Byrd
Autonomous Self-Care: A Means To Mitigate Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Clinical Social Workers, Jessica Byrd
DSW Capstone Projects
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) negatively impacts the health of clinical social workers, thus, impairing their ability to provide quality services. The symptoms and consequences of STS have been discussed for decades and the conversation continues because STS is a prevalent and pervasive problem that effects social workers, clients, and organizations. For as long as STS has been recognized as a problem, self-care has been identified as a solution. Yet, clinical social workers underutilize self-care strategies to safeguard their mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
A systematic review of the literature review was conducted to explore, why self-care is underutilized among clinical …

Transforming Hurt Boys Into Restored Men: The Lack Of Mental Health Treatment For Black Male Trauma Survivors, Shericka Danielle Smith
Transforming Hurt Boys Into Restored Men: The Lack Of Mental Health Treatment For Black Male Trauma Survivors, Shericka Danielle Smith
DSW Capstone Projects
Trauma affects individuals differently, but the prevalence of trauma and its impact on Black males is detrimental. Black males are at higher risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, and violent crimes when trauma is left untreated by a mental health professional. As the number of traumatic events experienced by Black males continues to rise, the number of these males who seek mental health treatment remains stagnant and painfully low. Many factors play into these behaviors, yet very little data exists on what is being done to change them.
Product one is a systematic literature review in which …
