Spatial Marginalization Of Emotional Support: Understanding Animal-Human Dynamics Of Care On College Campuses, Aleksandra Craine
Spatial Marginalization Of Emotional Support: Understanding Animal-Human Dynamics Of Care On College Campuses, Aleksandra Craine
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
In 2015 Kearny-Nebraska court case determined that student campus housing is considered a dwelling and is therefore covered by housing antidiscrimination laws. Since then, increasing numbers of students across U.S. campuses applied to bring an emotional support animal to live with them. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as “trained or untrained animals that do work, perform tasks, provide assistance, and/or provide therapeutic emotional support for individuals with disabilities.” Persons requesting ESA accommodations usually must provide documentation from a medical provider or therapist. ESAs remain a legally and socially contested category …
Entre Irse Y Quedarse: Sociolinguistic Effects Of The H-2a Program In The U.S. And Mexico, Hayden D. Holman
Entre Irse Y Quedarse: Sociolinguistic Effects Of The H-2a Program In The U.S. And Mexico, Hayden D. Holman
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
This dissertation examines stabilized circular migration as a distinct sociolinguistic condition through a study of Mexican participants in the U.S. H-2A temporary agricultural worker program. Whereas much migration scholarship presumes linear settlement and cumulative immersion, the H-2A program institutionalizes repeated cycles of departure and return between specific origin and destination communities. This patterned mobility produces recurrent immersion in an English-dominant environment followed by re-centering in a Spanish-dominant community, creating conditions of cyclical activation and recalibration of linguistic repertoires.
The study investigates two interrelated questions: (1) how sustained participation in stabilized circular mobility shapes participants’ spoken repertoires, contact-induced features, and language …
Visual Genealogies Of Disability In Mexican Visual Culture, Daniela Calvache Garcia
Visual Genealogies Of Disability In Mexican Visual Culture, Daniela Calvache Garcia
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
Disability in Mexico is a visually constructed category, shaped by a long genealogy of representation in which images of bodily difference actively participate in defining power and the management of all bodies. The discursive forces that define disability as unproductivity reduce body-minds to the service of the economic system, affecting our relationship with death, illness, reproduction, size, youth, and beauty. Across the Mesoamerican visual space, such representations have long unsettled dominant systems of truth about bodies. This dissertation examines how conceptions of disability are produced, negotiated, and reimagined through three historical moments and cultural expressions: Pre-Hispanic Mayan imagery, Mexican colonial …

Una Lima Multicultural: La Cultura Material De Las Mujeres Afroperuanas Durante Los Siglos Xvi Y Xvii, Rebeca Ponce Ochoa
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
On Stripping And Antipodes In Motivic Steenrod Algebras, Joshua A. Peterson
On Stripping And Antipodes In Motivic Steenrod Algebras, Joshua A. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
We generalize the stripping process to the (mod 2) $\mathbb{C}$- and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic settings. Throughout, we include discussion on how the process changes and the difficulties moving to more general settings. We also introduce antipodes and consider what a potential $\mathbb{R}$-motivic analogue may look like. Finally, we elaborate on how the results may be used in future work to generalize a nilpotence result of Walker and Wood.
Extensions Between Modules Defined By Lattice Paths In The Preprojective Algebra, Chloe Napier
Extensions Between Modules Defined By Lattice Paths In The Preprojective Algebra, Chloe Napier
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In 2001, Fomin and Zelevinsky introduced cluster algebras which appear as coordinate rings of many varieties. We study cluster algebras coming from Richardson varieties. Leclerc gives a cluster structure on Richardson varieties using the representation theory of preprojective algebras. While this construction is very algebraic, we take a more combinatorial approach. The main goal is to find a combinatorial description for when certain cluster variables are compatible, or equivalently when modules defined by lattice paths in the preprojective algebra have trivial extensions. We extend the known results from Geiss, Leclerc, and Schröer that answer this question in the case of …
A Character Theory For Loop Representations Of Symmetric Monoidal Bicategories, Jordan Sawdy
A Character Theory For Loop Representations Of Symmetric Monoidal Bicategories, Jordan Sawdy
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Character theory arises in many distinct fields of mathematics, but its many instantiations often share a few key features: they arise in contexts where one object is acted on or parametrized by another, and they are often computed via "trace-like" formulas. Focusing on these properties, we present a categorical formalism for constructing such characters. We first define a notion of "loop representation" for symmetric monoidal bicategories, then build a character for such representations via the canonical symmetric monoidal trace. We then show that this character defines a symmetric monoidal functor which satisfies commutativity properties with respect to both restriction- and …
Inverse Problems For The Radiative Transport Equation In Local And Non-Convex Geometries, Faith E. Hensley
Inverse Problems For The Radiative Transport Equation In Local And Non-Convex Geometries, Faith E. Hensley
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Inverse problems for the radiative transport equation (RTE) arise in a wide range of imaging applications, including optical tomography and problems motivated by non-line-of-sight imaging. Classical reconstruction methods rely heavily on ballistic, or unscattered, photons and typically require full boundary access, leading to severe instability and limited applicability in geometrically constrained settings. This dissertation investigates inverse radiative transport problems with restricted boundary data and develops reconstruction techniques based on scattered photons. The central focus of this work is the analysis and isolation of the single-collision term in the collision expansion of solutions to the RTE. By exploiting its distinct analytical …
Combinatorial Models For Nonnegativity In Flag Varieties, Williem L. Rizer
Combinatorial Models For Nonnegativity In Flag Varieties, Williem L. Rizer
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
The nonnegative Grassmannian admits a widely studied cell decomposition due to Alexander Postnikov, whose cells are indexed by positroids and modeled by several equivalent combinatorial objects. Subsequent work by authors including Lauren Williams, Suho Oh, and Carolina Benedetti has further developed the combinatorics and geometry of these structures. In this dissertation, we extend some of Postnikov’s combinatorial framework to the nonnegative flag variety. While cell decompositions in this setting were previously obtained, notably in work of Konstanze Rietsch, our focus is on providing new combinatorial models that make this structure more explicit and computationally tractable. We introduce flag positroid pipe …
The Interaction Between Additive And Multiplicative Structures In Arithmetic Settings, Ali Alsetri
The Interaction Between Additive And Multiplicative Structures In Arithmetic Settings, Ali Alsetri
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
The first part of this thesis is concerned with Goldbach-type problems. In recent years, there has been an interest in developing density versions of Goldbach-type results. Namely, given a relatively dense subset A of the primes, one may study representations of integers as sums of primes belonging to the subset A. These density Goldbach-type results have been facilitated by the development of new tools from additive combinatorics, in particular the Fourier-analytic transference principle due to Green. We apply the transference principle to obtain a variant of Vinogradov’s theorem involving subsets of primes confined to the residue class 1 (mod 3). …
Local Energy Decay For Non-Stationary Damped Wave Operators, Nicholas Dj Arsenault
Local Energy Decay For Non-Stationary Damped Wave Operators, Nicholas Dj Arsenault
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
This work establishes integrated local energy decay (ILED) estimates for the damped wave equation on certain non-stationary spacetimes. The main technical result is a high frequency estimate that holds in great generality, provided that null geodesics trapped in a compact region are sufficiently damped. This is combined with low- and medium-frequency estimates to establish full local energy decay. We conclude by providing a counterexample where the damping assumption fails and local energy decay does not hold.
Understanding Möbius Inversion As Composite Of Dual Pairs, Isaac B. Kochmaan
Understanding Möbius Inversion As Composite Of Dual Pairs, Isaac B. Kochmaan
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Möbius inversion is a well-studied computational tool in number theory and combinatorics, but it exhibits a pattern which may be familiar to those who study categorical traces. In 2016, Kate Ponto and Michael Shulman characterized duality and traces in the bicategory of profunctors for a particularly nice class of one-cells. We extend these results. Consequently, we construct, for a given poset, a profunctor whose Euler characteristic is the Möbius function of said poset. In light of this, we propose a categorical notion of Möbius inversion.
Economic Inequality And Family Formation In The United States, Elizabeth S. Krause
Economic Inequality And Family Formation In The United States, Elizabeth S. Krause
Theses and Dissertations--Economics
This dissertation evaluates economic inequality and family formation in the United States in three essays. In Essay 1, I estimate the effect of providing subsidized access to immediate postpartum contraceptives on birth spacing and infant health among low-income teen mothers. The intent-to-treat estimates indicate a 20% reduction in the monthly short-interval birth rate among teens 12-14 months after policy enactment. I also find evidence that the policy increased the average interval between births and reduced preterm and low-birth weight births and NICU admission rates. In Essay 2, I provide evidence that single mothers and single women without children are important …
The Rhesus Macaque Model Of Mycobacterium Avium Infection Reveals That Age-Related Disease Is Due In Part To Chronic Inflammation And Lung Microbial Dysbiosis, Ethan G. Napier
Theses and Dissertations--Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics
Aging is associated with dysregulated immunity and increased susceptibility to infection, a phenomenon dubbed as immunosenescence and characterized by reduced naïve T and B cell pools, altered innate immune function, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) pulmonary disease (NTMPD) is an increasingly relevant chronic lung infection that disproportionately affects older adults (65+ years) and immunocompromised individuals. However, the host factors underlying increased disease severity in aged patients remain poorly defined. Literature suggests that effective control of NTM relies on coordinated innate and adaptive immune responses, particularly macrophage activation and Th1 cytokine signaling. Using a rhesus macaque model that closely …
A Framework For Characterizing The Peripheral Immune Isonome Using Long-Read Single-Cell Rna Sequencing And Its Relevance To Neurological Disease, Patricia Hayes Doyle
A Framework For Characterizing The Peripheral Immune Isonome Using Long-Read Single-Cell Rna Sequencing And Its Relevance To Neurological Disease, Patricia Hayes Doyle
Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience
Long-read single-cell RNA sequencing provides an opportunity to understand human health and disease at isoform resolution, revealing cellular diversity and disease mechanisms difficult to resolve with bulk or short-read methodologies.
Using a modified PIPseq workflow and computational pipeline adapted for Oxford Nanopore (ONT) sequencing, we profiled isoform usage across immune cells, integrating marker expression and isoform discovery, generating the largest long-read single-cell dataset of human immune cells from a single individual to date. We identified non-canonical protein-coding variants of GZMB and CD3G enriched in unexpected cell types. We also discovered novel transcripts from CMC1 and LYAR with cell-type-specific signatures that …
Metabolism As A Regulator Of Sleep And Cortical Activity In Health And Alzheimer’S Disease, Nicholas J. Constantino
Metabolism As A Regulator Of Sleep And Cortical Activity In Health And Alzheimer’S Disease, Nicholas J. Constantino
Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience
Metabolic flexibility is essential for maintaining normal physiological function, enabling an organism to sense, flux, utilize, and switch fuel sources in response to changing energetic availability, demand, and cellular needs. Energetic demands are state-dependent, with wake and sleep exhibiting distinct metabolic profiles. Sleep is highly sensitive to changes in metabolism and requires metabolic flexibility to both transition into and maintain sleep stability. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is increasingly recognized as a disease of altered metabolism yet is often framed as a disease of energetic failure. We instead define AD as a disease of metabolic inflexibility, characterized not by insufficient energy availability, …
Environmental Predictors Of Human Lyme Disease Incidence Across Appalachian Counties In Kentucky, Virginia, And West Virginia, 2000-2019, Karlie D. Rennison
Environmental Predictors Of Human Lyme Disease Incidence Across Appalachian Counties In Kentucky, Virginia, And West Virginia, 2000-2019, Karlie D. Rennison
Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics
This ecological study examined county-level environmental, landscape, and host-related predictors of Lyme disease incidence across Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia from 2000-2019. Lyme disease is an emerging public health concern in the Appalachian region, where geographic expansion and shifting ecological conditions may influence disease risk.
Lyme disease case rates (per 10,000 population) were analyzed in relation to climate variables, land cover metrics, host density measures, and rurality using publicly available data sources. Descriptive and regression analyses were conducted to evaluate associations between candidate predictors and disease incidence.
Substantial geographic variation in Lyme disease incidence was observed, with higher case rates …
Essays In Consumer Credit Markets, Sarah Najafzadeh Khoei
Essays In Consumer Credit Markets, Sarah Najafzadeh Khoei
Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods
This dissertation studies how technology, market structure, and contract design shape outcomes in consumer credit markets, with a particular focus on auto lending and leasing. In the first chapter, I investigate the performance of automated underwriting systems relative to human underwriters in the auto loan market. While prior studies document the advantages of automated underwriting, I show that its performance deteriorates under conditions of heightened data uncertainty. Exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic as an exogenous shock and using a combination of difference-in-differences and regression discontinuity designs, I find that automated underwriting performs significantly worse than human underwriting during this period, particularly …
Beyond The Veil: Critical Black Kantianism And The Ethics Of Structural (In)Visibility, Paradise A. Stanford
Beyond The Veil: Critical Black Kantianism And The Ethics Of Structural (In)Visibility, Paradise A. Stanford
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
This dissertation develops what I call Critical Black Kantianism, a reconstructive approach to Kantian moral philosophy that centers race, recognition, and the structural conditions under which moral agency is formed. While Kantian ethics typically presumes idealized agents operating within just social contexts, this project argues that such abstraction obscures how racial domination actively shapes autonomy, dignity, and self-consciousness. Drawing on W.E.B. Du Bois’ account of double consciousness, Black feminist thought, and contemporary theories of recognition, I show that moral agency is not merely exercised within social environments but is constituted through them—often under conditions of misrecognition that fracture autonomy.

Design And Advancement Of Analytical Frameworks For In Vivo Single-Photon Calcium Imaging To Characterize Temporal- And Treatment-Dependent Neural Adaptations To Opioid Exposure And Withdrawal In The Medial Prefrontal Cortex, Alexia R. Alsum Dr.
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Despite the availability of several approved medications for opioid use disorder (OUD), it remains a significant public health concern characterized by persistent neurobiological adaptations that drive relapse and impede successful recovery. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a region critical for executive control and decision-making, undergoes pronounced functional changes during chronic opioid exposure and withdrawal, yet the cellular mechanisms underlying these adaptations remain poorly understood. This dissertation aims to investigate longitudinal alterations in mPFC neural activity across opioid exposure and withdrawal using in vivo single-photon calcium imaging and newly developed computational frameworks.
Following standard preprocessing to extract and normalize calcium traces, …
Exploring The Limitations Of Substrate Scope In Dimethylallyltryptophan Synthases, Evan T. Miller
Exploring The Limitations Of Substrate Scope In Dimethylallyltryptophan Synthases, Evan T. Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Natural products (NPs), are the largest source of bioactive compounds in Nature, and are essential to the treatment of human disease. Nearly 50% of drugs approved for use from 1981 to 2019 owe some aspect of their development to NPs, either in terms of their structure, pharmacophore, or mechanism of action. However, NPs are difficult to structurally optimize. Chemoenzymatic methods for NP derivatization have been increasingly seen as practical alternatives to traditional synthetic methods. Prenyltransferases (PTs) are involved in the primary and secondary metabolism of plants, bacteria, and fungi, and they are key enzymes in the biosynthesis of many clinically …
The Immune Hangover: Understanding The Influence Of Alcohol Use, Abstinence, And Post-Abstinence Drinking On Monocyte Plasticity, Madison B. Blanton
The Immune Hangover: Understanding The Influence Of Alcohol Use, Abstinence, And Post-Abstinence Drinking On Monocyte Plasticity, Madison B. Blanton
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Alcohol consumption is widespread in the United States, with 80% of individuals aged 12 and older reporting alcohol use and 1-in-4 engaging in risky drinking behaviors. Alcohol misuse heightens susceptibility to infections and delays wound healing, indicating a disrupted immune system. Previous studies show alcohol rewires immune cells, especially monocytes and macrophages, which play critical roles in tissue homeostasis and host defense.
Using a rhesus macaque model of ethanol self-administration, we demonstrate that after 6-months of drinking, monocytes exhibit decreased cytokine production and significant transcriptomic changes, indicating a hypo-inflammatory state. In contrast, 12-months of chronic alcohol use induces hyperinflammatory responses, …
Linking S‑Pillar Empirical Criteria With Boundary And Finite Element Models For Underground Stone Pillar Analysis, Benjamin Diddle
Linking S‑Pillar Empirical Criteria With Boundary And Finite Element Models For Underground Stone Pillar Analysis, Benjamin Diddle
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
The objective of this thesis is to strengthen the relationship between empirically based stone pillar design methods and two numerical modeling techniques by calibrating boundary element and finite element models to the S‑Pillar empirical criteria and observed pillar behavior in underground stone mines. The first component of the research investigates the displacement‑discontinuity boundary element method implemented in LaModel, quantifying the influence of the lamination thickness and element size on stone pillar safety factor predictions. Results showed that optimal thickness depends on overburden modulus, while larger element sizes introduce significant SF differences from S-Pillar values once the grid size exceeds 5 …
Validation Of Final And Dynamic Subsidence Prediction Models Using The Influence Function Method, Carlos M. Hernandez Garcia
Validation Of Final And Dynamic Subsidence Prediction Models Using The Influence Function Method, Carlos M. Hernandez Garcia
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
This study evaluates the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS Version 7) for predicting final and dynamic subsidence in longwall mining. Using the influence function method, SDPS 7 was calibrated using data from the Quarto 7 Mine (Ohio, USA) and two panels in Anhui Province, China, to test the reliability of the method under varying geological and operational conditions, particularly low advance rates.
For the Quarto 7 Mine, monument line C provided the optimal set of subsidence parameters: SSF of 78%, tanβ of 2.97, edge‑effect offset of 160 ft, with an RMSE of 0.108 ft. These values aligned with estimates obtained …
Evaluation Of The Proclivity For Recovering Rare Earth Elements Via Heap Leaching Of Coal And Coal Byproducts, Dylan Connell
Evaluation Of The Proclivity For Recovering Rare Earth Elements Via Heap Leaching Of Coal And Coal Byproducts, Dylan Connell
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
Rare earth elements (REEs) - 17 elements classified as light (LREE) or heavy (HREE) - underpin modern technology. This thesis presents the development, design, and testing of a heap leach pad (HLP) to extract REEs from Western KY No.13 seam coal refuse. Testing included resource estimation, column and heap leaching, and an economic feasibility study. Drillhole analyses identified average REE concentrations in two refuse piles of 286 ppm and 290 ppm. The resource base totaled approximately 7,085 metric tons of REOs. The HLP, constructed with 2,000 metric tons of coal refuse material, was tested continuously over 308 days. Fresh lixiviant …
Field-Assisted Post-Processing Of Cold-Sprayed Pure Copper, Alan Hensley
Field-Assisted Post-Processing Of Cold-Sprayed Pure Copper, Alan Hensley
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The properties of materials processed through cold spray, and many other AM processes, are non-uniform and unpredictable. In most cases, post-processing is required to achieve desired properties and better uniformity. In cold spray, the typical method is an annealing heat treatment (AHT), which can improve bond strength, reduce porosity, and restore ductility, among other effects. AHT alone, however, is unable to completely remedy any of the unfavorable properties. In addition, long treatments at high temperatures are often needed for satisfactory results. This increases energy consumption and extends production times for products made by the process. For these reasons, numerous investigations …
Multiphysics Transport In Porous Thermal Protection Systems: Experimental Characterization Of Gas Permeability And Radiative Properties, Yejajul Hakim
Multiphysics Transport In Porous Thermal Protection Systems: Experimental Characterization Of Gas Permeability And Radiative Properties, Yejajul Hakim
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Porous thermal protection systems (TPS) used in hypersonic vehicles exhibit coupled gas and radiative transport across multiple regimes and length scales. Accurate performance prediction requires reliable characterization of permeability, slip-flow behavior, and radiative transport properties, particularly for low-permeability and charred materials where existing data are limited. This dissertation presents experimental methods for characterizing multiphysics transport in porous TPS materials. A modular flow system was developed to measure permeability and slip behavior in both virgin and charred materials under relevant environments. A transient pressure decay method enables accurate permeability estimation in low-permeability regimes and provides insight into effective pore structure. Results …
Reciprocity-Based Transfer Function Techniques For Acoustic Source Reconstruction, Spring Isolator Characterization And Structural Damping Assessment, David Pum Thian Lal Paite Neihguk
Reciprocity-Based Transfer Function Techniques For Acoustic Source Reconstruction, Spring Isolator Characterization And Structural Damping Assessment, David Pum Thian Lal Paite Neihguk
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Reciprocity implies that a system responds identically when the source and receiver positions are interchanged. This dissertation applies this principle to address three practical challenges in noise and vibration characterization, where conventional approaches are limited by inaccessible interfaces, constrained excitation conditions, or metrics that do not fully capture vibroacoustic behavior.
The first study develops and validates an inverse method to characterize ducted acoustic sources using acoustic free velocity. Acoustic reciprocity is applied to simplify transfer function measurements. The method is extended to large cross-section ducts, where the source is reconstructed as a collection of point sources along a plane. Validation …
Process-Guided Learning Via Data-Driven Modeling And Controller Synthesis, Benton Clark
Process-Guided Learning Via Data-Driven Modeling And Controller Synthesis, Benton Clark
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This work introduces process-guided learning, a framework in which process characteristics and learning algorithms are combined in the modeling process of engineering applications with the aim of uniting traditional and data-driven modeling and control techniques. Traditional engineering methods using simplified analytic models fail to capture the increasing complexities of engineering problems with sufficient accuracy to achieve modern requirements. More advanced modeling and control techniques using high-fidelity models often produce a computational burden that is infeasible for real-time solutions. Data-driven modeling offers a simple and flexible algorithm for producing real-time capable, high-fidelity models, but naive implementations lack the physical constraints of …
Investigating The Potential Role Of Toxoplasma Gondii In The Development Of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, Brooklyn Nicole Shirah
Investigating The Potential Role Of Toxoplasma Gondii In The Development Of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, Brooklyn Nicole Shirah
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a neurologic disease of horses prevalent in the Americas, caused by the coccidian parasites Sarcocystis neurona and Neospora hughesi. Toxoplasma gondii is a related parasite that infects nearly all warm-blooded animals, including horses. Prior studies show conflicting results on whether T. gondii contributes to EPM, in part because no validated T. gondii serologic assay exists in horses. This study developed a recombinant TgSAG1 ELISA and confirmatory Western blot. These assays evaluated T. gondii seropositivity in 789 serum samples from healthy and neurologic horses across multiple geographic regions and examined 31 paired serum:CSF samples for …
