Open Education As A Tool For Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion, Stephen Krueger Oct 2025

Open Education As A Tool For Trans And Gender Diverse Inclusion, Stephen Krueger

Library Presentations

There has been little attention given to gender diversity in the open education world so far. But OER and open pedagogy have the potential to be extraordinary tools for supporting trans and gender diverse students: removing cost barriers for a population with extremely high poverty rates, adapting resources to include current and localized information about healthcare and law, and highlighting trans and gender diverse voices. This session will offer an overview of the relationship between open education and gender inclusion. It will also touch on ways in which widespread practices in open education do not serve trans and gender diverse …

Contribution Of Grassland Science To The Development Of Forage Production And Future Perspectives For Grassland Farming In Japan, H Oizumi Oct 2025

Contribution Of Grassland Science To The Development Of Forage Production And Future Perspectives For Grassland Farming In Japan, H Oizumi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The utilization of grassland in Japan dates to fairy old times, but its real improvement in terms of industry did not start until the termination of the World War II. As the climatic conditions in Japan differ very much from those of European coutries, the style of grassland farming in Japan is somewhat different from that of Europe. The improvement of grassland farming in Japan after the World War II was divided into four stages, according to the tendency of the number of cattle and the acreage of forage crops. The Japanese Society of Grassland Science was established in 1954. …

Self-Doped And Planar Nitrogen-Bay-Functionalized Perylene Diimides, Kathryn M. Wolfe, Zachary T. Gardner, Zachary M. Smith, Alexander Harrison, Chad Risko, Gregory C. Welch Oct 2025

Self-Doped And Planar Nitrogen-Bay-Functionalized Perylene Diimides, Kathryn M. Wolfe, Zachary T. Gardner, Zachary M. Smith, Alexander Harrison, Chad Risko, Gregory C. Welch

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Bay-functionalization of perylene diimides (PDIs) offers a strategy for modulating electronic properties to achieve optimal n-type charge transport character, but can result in core twisting and reduced planarity, leading to compromised π-conjugation and disruption of tight π–π stacking in the solid state. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two new nitrogen-bay-functionalized N-annulated PDIs, where N-annulation effectively enforces planarity of the polycyclic aromatic core thus preserving π-conjugation even with bulky bay substituents present. Both compounds exhibit intramolecular charge transfer character, tunable optical and electrochemical properties, and strong paramagnetic behaviour without external dopants present, as confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Wireless charging of unmanned ground vehicles and aircraft has been proposed to increase charging reliability and security, allow for autonomous functionality, and either reduce battery size or increase continuous flight time. This paper proposes a three-phase Litz wire primary and a two-phase PCB secondary for high secondary-side power density considering misalignment tolerances, surface and volumetric power density, and coil sizing. Electromagnetic 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulations are conducted to study variation in mutual inductance and coupling coefficient with different secondary coil sizes and number of turns, horizontal and vertical misalignment between the primary and secondary, and a combination of …

Nonlinear Design Scaling Of Electric Machines Based On Hybrid De And Meta-Modeling Application To Synchronous Motors With Combined Pm Stator And Reluctance Rotor Excitation, Oluwaseun A. Badewa, Dan M. Ionel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

This paper presents an innovative method for nonlinear scaling of electric machines by integrating machine learning (ML)-based meta-modeling with a differential evolution (DE) algorithm. The technique is applied to high-performance combined-excitation synchronous electric motors which exhibit highly nonlinear characteristics, making performance scaling challenging. The proposed approach employs an ML meta-model trained on data obtained from finite element analysis (FEA), utilizing an experimentally validated model for nonlinear scaling and performance prediction at different power ratings. The accuracy of the meta-model in capturing the nonlinear relationships between design parameters and motor performance is first assessed using metrics such as R-squared (R2) and …

Estrogen Signaling Is Necessary For The Sex Difference In Simulated Jet Lag In Mice, Maria A. Venegas, Nicholas Westray, Samuel Nwadialo, Yuriko Katsumata, Julie S. Pendergast

Biology Faculty Publications

The circadian system coordinates 24-h cycles of internal biological processes with the environmental light-dark cycle. Abrupt shifts in the timing of the light-dark cycle misalign internal circadian clocks with the environment and cause jet lag until resynchronization occurs. The objective of this study was to investigate the sex difference in simulated jet lag in mice. Female mice resynchronized faster than male mice to 6-h advances of the light-dark cycle that mimicked eastward travel. Circulating estradiol was necessary and sufficient for rapid resynchronization in female mice since ovariectomized females resynchronized slower than mice treated with estradiol. Disabling estrogen receptor a (ERa), …

Degradation Minimization Of Utility-Scale Li-Ion Bess Through Operational Optimization Employing An Equivalent Circuit Model, Kwabena A. Kyeremeh, Grant M. Fischer, Donovin D. Lewis, Aron Patrick, Dan M. Ionel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

The increasing deployment of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) necessitates effective strategies for supporting grid services while minimizing degradation that may compromise system longevity. High charge/discharge rates (C-rate) and imbalanced operation of multi-unit BESS configurations may accelerate degradation. This paper proposes a degradation-aware operational optimization based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) for coordinating multiple BESS units under physical and operational constraints. The multi-objective optimization model imposes penalties on C-rate magnitude, operational state-of-charge (SoC) disparity, and battery internal resistance modeled using an equivalent circuit model. A case study conducted for a fleet of BESS units over a one-week load profile …

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

The Meadow Bank scarp (MBS) in southeastern Illinois is a linear geomorphic expression, ∼10 km long and ∼8 m high above a relatively flat landscape. It parallels an underlying northeast-oriented Late-Precambrian–Early-Cambrian structural fabric, called the Wabash Valley fault zone, and is within an area of modern, historic, and paleo seismicity, called the Wabash Valley seismic zone. In addition, the MBS acts as a boundary of the Wabash River floodplain, as well as Pleistocene glacial outwash channels, which show evidence of frequent outburst flood events. To better understand the MBS’s equivocal origin in this complex geologic environment, we acquired a 917-m-long …
