Sex And Age Comparisons In Neuromuscular And Biomechanical Characteristics Of The Knee In Young Athletes, Erin R. Pletcher, Travis J. Dekker, Scott M. Lephart, Tim C. Sell Apr 2021

Sex And Age Comparisons In Neuromuscular And Biomechanical Characteristics Of The Knee In Young Athletes, Erin R. Pletcher, Travis J. Dekker, Scott M. Lephart, Tim C. Sell

Sports Medicine Research Institute Faculty Publications

Background: The identification of risk factors for injury is a key step for musculoskeletal injury prevention in youth sports. Not identifying and correcting for injury risk factors may result in lost opportunity for athletic development. Physical maturation and sex affect these characteristics, which may indicate the need for both age and sex-based injury prevention programs.

Hypothesis/Purpose: This study examined age and sex differences in knee strength, static balance, jump height, and lower extremity landing biomechanics in school- and high school-age athletes.

Study Design: Cross-sectional.

Methods: Forty healthy school aged (10.8±0.8 yrs) and forty high school (16.8±0.8 yrs) athletes completed isokinetic …

Modeling Fate And Transport Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Vocs) Inside Sewer Systems, Mohammadyousef Roghani, Ying Li, Nader Rezaei, Ariel Robinson, Elham Shirazi, Kelly G. Pennell Apr 2021

Modeling Fate And Transport Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Vocs) Inside Sewer Systems, Mohammadyousef Roghani, Ying Li, Nader Rezaei, Ariel Robinson, Elham Shirazi, Kelly G. Pennell

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Hazardous waste site investigations have shown that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be transported via sewer pipes and migrate into indoor spaces. Despite field data confirming the presence of this exposure pathway, there is lack of context-based numerical models that provide guidance to characterize and predict VOCs concentration in sewer gas at vapor intrusion sites. Particularly, this poses a challenge when assessing and mitigating risks associated with these exposure pathways. Therefore, a numerical model has been developed to simulate the concentration of VOCs in sewer gas in different stages throughout the sewer lines. The developed model considers various input parameters, …

Association Between Obesity And Histological Tumor Budding In Patients With Nonmetastatic Colon Cancer, Tong Gan, Kurt B. Schaberg, Daheng He, Akila Mansour, Harit Kapoor, Chi Wang, B. Mark Evers, Therese J. Bocklage

Surgery Faculty Publications

Importance: Obesity is associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) and a more aggressive disease course. Tumor budding (TB) is an important prognostic factor for CRC, but its association with obesity is unknown.

Objective: To evaluate the association of TB with obesity and other prognostic factors in colon cancer.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study involved a histological review of colon cancer specimens obtained during 7 years (January 2008 to December 2015) at the University of Kentucky Medical Center; data analysis was conducted from February 2020 to January 2021. Specimens came from 200 patients with stage I to …

Functional analysis of the Mtl1 protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has revealed that this transmembrane sensor endows yeast cells with resistance to oxidative stress through a signaling mechanism called the cell wall integrity pathway (CWI). We observed upregulation of multiple heat shock proteins (HSPs), proteins associated with the formation of stress granules, and the phosphatase subunit of trehalose 6-phosphate synthase which suggests that mtl1Δ strains undergo intrinsic activation of a non-lethal heat stress response. Furthermore, quantitative global proteomic analysis conducted on TMT-labeled proteins combined with metabolome analysis revealed that mtl1Δ strains exhibit decreased levels of metabolites of carboxylic acid metabolism, decreased …

Protocol For Rapid Assessment Of The Efficacy Of Novel Wnt Inhibitors Using Zebrafish Models, Meghan G. Haney, Mary Wimsett, Chunming Liu, Jessica S. Blackburn

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Dysregulation of Wnt signaling is a hallmark of many cancers, and the development of effective, non-toxic small-molecule Wnt inhibitors is desirable. Off-target toxicities of new compounds are typically tested in mouse models, which is both costly and time consuming. Here, we present a rapid and inexpensive protocol to determine the in vivo toxicity and efficacy of novel Wnt inhibitors in zebrafish using a combination of a fluorescence reporter assay as well as eye rescue and fin regeneration assays. These experiments are completed within 1 week to rapidly narrow drug candidates before moving to more expensive pre-clinical testing.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is an unexpected sudden death due to a heart condition, that occurs within one hour of symptoms onset. SCD is a leading cause of death in western countries, and is responsible for the majority of deaths from cardiovascular disease. Moreover, SCD accounts for mortality in approximately half of all coronary heart disease patients. Nevertheless, the recent advancements made in screening, prevention, treatment, and management of the underlying causes has decreased this number. In this article, we sought to review established and new modes of screening patients at risk for SCD, treatment and prevention of SCD, and …
